OT: Mavs Make Offer for Ron Artest

Link

According to a source close to Dallas, the Mavericks offered 14th year swingman Jerry Stackhouse and fourth-year forward Brandon Bass for Kings small forward Ron Artest.

The Kings are not expected to entertain the offer if it doesn't include Dallas small forward Josh Howard, but the inquiry certainly reveals the level of the Mavs' interest. According to the source, Howard does not appear to be available even if the Mavs are looking for a significant addition after falling to New Orleans in the first round of the postseason. -- Sacramento Bee

I'm not sure if there is any point in adding Artest if we have to give up Josh Howard, as I don't think it would bring the Mavs back to being a top-tier team in the West.  Simultaneously, it is going to be difficult to add a major piece without giving up Howard.  If we can do it for just Stackhouse and Bass, I think the Mavs jump right back up to the elite of the West.  I'd hate to get rid of Bass but you have to do it if you are getting a guy like Artest in return.

By the way

no way in hell the Kings do that deal.

Josh Hamilton is better than you.

+1

Sacramento would be braindead to take that, especially because you have to figure that they’re going to get much better offers elsewhere.

I think.....

the players involved hit the wire in the hopes that someone will better. Sac is pushing it to the press because they don’t have better offers already. I kind of doubt the get better offers actually. They just won’t trade him.

Regardless

it is interesting that the Mavs would made the offer. I don’t think it is that crazy. I’d rather do that deal over Odom.

Nope

They wouldn’t do this. However, if we threw enough expirers together to take bad their bad contract as well (Kenny Thomas) we might be in business.

I’m not sure they’re going to get a whole lot of great offers for Artest, and Kenny Thomas has 20mil left on his two year deal. It’s possible.

This is a posing

They’re doing what the Rangers do: “See, we tried to improve our team, but the other team just didn’t bite. Oh well.” The Mavs knew that offer wouldn’t work. They’re just trying to take some of the blame off them for putting out another very average team next year.

What are you talking about? Rangers have tried their best to get FAs to come here…so, if they don’t come, that’s the Rangers ‘posing’??

Josh Hamilton is better than you.

Well

It just didn’t sound convincing. I mean, forget it, it’s subjective from where the fans sit. If you want to believe Hicks gambles with tens of millions on whether FAs will sign, go for it. Where I sit that’s just not the simplest explanation…

limited corruption (two refs) in NBA vs. extreme breaking of law by baseball players (steroids/HGH).

the NBA is far more offensive

I was just giving you a hard-time. It sucks that we’ve been watching this sport and a few of the refs have been cheating, it is really disgusting to even think about. Regardless, I still want Artest for Bass and Stackhouse!

it's going to take

Stackhouse, Howard, Eddie Jones, AND taking on Kenny Thomas’ contract in order to get Artest and Francisco Garcia.

heh

The Mavs have nothing to trade. That offer is pathetic. I like Brandon Bass but I think we has fans over estimate his trade value.

I’m comfortable with the Mavericks being the Dallas team on the slide, considering the other three are making significant steps forward. It’s going to be a long couple of years…

Plaschke: Scioscia, the former Dodgers catcher, is the model manager who has created an atmosphere of winning.
Junior:It's that simple. Mike Scioscia brings a Glade Plug-In labeled "Winning™" into the clubhouse and everyone who breathes it in gains 15 points in average.

Cuban

But can Cuban take having his team be on the decline.

That's the question

Not sure he has much of a choice right now.

Cuban was lucky

Cuban was lucky when he bought the mavs Nash, Finley and Dirk were all in place and on the upswing. Cuban did open his wallet in the beggining and brought enthusiasm but he eventually screwed it all up. It was Mark who thought Nash was done and then he went on to win 2 MVP’s. If Dirk and Nash kept playing together they would have won 2 championships—Don Nelson said. Don Nelson was the best thing that happened for this franchise and Mark screwed it up. Just recently we traded a young probably a border line All-Star in the future in Devin Harris for a 35 year old aging Jason Kidd and traded multiple draft picks along with it. Mark Cuban is overrated as an owner. Jerry Jones will always be the best owner in this town.

by Monkey Brain on Jul 17, 2008 2:27 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, you're wrong.

I know I’m more of a Cuban apologist than most, but you’re wrong. Don Nelson sucks, but so did Avery so that’s a wash. No way in hell the Mavs would’ve won 2 championships with Nash. He has arguable better talent around him in PHX and didn’t do anything. Kidd trade looks bad now, but we still got a year or two to see how it turns out….

by AirJordan on Jul 17, 2008 2:36 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sooo

Jerry trading two first round picks for Joey Galloway, what as that, a brilliant move?

All GM (or owners making GM decisions) have hits and misses.

If you don’t think Cuban is part of the solution then you weren’t a fan of the Mavs in the mid 90’s.

by jthig32 on Jul 17, 2008 3:55 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jerry

Jerry has learned in recent years from past mistakes. He gave a lot of power away to fix the Cowboys when he made Parcells the cowboys coach and it paid off. Cuban has a big ego and that will never happen with him. Jerry has 3 rings Cuban has none. Jerry is by far the best owner in DFW. I’ve been a fan of the mavs my entire life and the Mavs were all ready an up and coming team when he bought the franchise. Cuban is an overrated owner.

You know what

Screw Josh Howard. I think I might like seeing Artest instead of Howard. He’s only on a one year deal too.
