so far smart money would tell you
to take the under. He’s been really lackluster in the strikeout department.

2K in the first inning.
Kept his scoreless streak alive, now at 14 IP, after stranding a walk that had advanced to 3B.
The radio guy said he hit 91, and his velocity has been improving lately.

Future for the season
Is anyone worried about ramping him up to a starter’s workload?
I would be a lot more comfortable letting McCarthy pitch out of a bullpen, as a long reliever maybe, and let him work his way back slowly. Maybe I’m just gunshy about him right now. I really like the guy but don’t have a lot of confidence at this point. The most conservative path possible.
However the Rangers proceed, I fully expect the next ailment to be blisters.
by bhudson on Jul 17, 2008 4:17 PM CDT 0 recs
You don't think the current path has been conservative?
I think one of the biggest reasons we haven’t seen him sooner is because they want to be absolutely sure that everything is healthy and functioning before pressing him.
My guess is that everything is ok now and he’s just building up arm strength.

"have a lot of confidence at this point"
That may be one of his biggest issues. He did have massive expectaions put upon him…..

Shutting him completely down...
Was the first conservative thing they’ve done. I just hope they are equally conservative in ramping him back up.

mccarthy
he almost always was rough in his first couple innings and then settled down a bit for the final few innings.
i think he is a guy who needs to be in a game and get a feel for his pitches, not suited to relief. id just risk it and hope he stays healthy, because I dont tihnk he is going to do too much for you out of the pen.
the preceding post is not nearly as negative or insulting as you think it is

they have been very conservative...
he was throwing for a month (long toss i guess) before he threw off the mound on 6/23 and he didnt throw breaking stuff until after his session on 7/1. So he was shut down for 2 months before he started throwing again. If all goes we’ll he should be back around 8/10.

relief
If I remember correctly he didn’t take to well when Chicago put hijm in the bullpen in 2006 and used him as long relief. If anything we need to build his arm strength up and if it takes optioning him to the minors when his rehab stint is up and letting him ramp up in OKC or Frisco for a couple starts before coming up thats fine. But his spot is in the rotation not the pen.

Really nice to see after his early struggles, despite his lack of patience (2 walks) or power (1 XBH).

Weird
Santana, Tracy and Frostad are all back at catcher. Necessity, I guess. I wish that they would leave Tracy there. I know his bat has been dissapointing, but if he is an adequate catcher, he could have some value.

Elvis Andrus
just got an error fielding a throwout attempt from the catcher.
I’m not sure how that even works.
by FirebatM3 on Jul 17, 2008 8:19 PM CDT 0 recs
That's not what happened.
Schlact got the guy at 1B with a third-to-first move. He threw it to Andrus who checked the guy on 3B and started running the guy back to 1B. He turned quickly back to first to make his throw and let the ball go before making sure he cleared the runner. The ball bounced off the helmet of the runner (who was going back to 1B).
The runner at 3B was awarded the plate, and the runner at 1B was awarded 2B and 3B. My question is… since he was heading back to 1B… shouldn’t his bases have been 1B and 2B? He wasn’t headed to 2B at the time of the error. That’s a rule that I’ve always felt has been misinterpreted.

More on the error...
The ball caromed off the runners helmet and into the San Antonio dugout.

though the
runner was trying to go back to first, he already had attained it, so he gets the next two bases… he’s not trying to ‘advance’ back to first, he’s retreating, and since the ball went into the dugout he gets to “advance” two bases…

Boscan
My groundball lover takes the bump tonight against Yakima.
On the year, Boscan is 6-0 with a 1.82 era and 28Ks and only 4 BB in 29.2 IP. His GB/FB ratio is 1.55 and opponents are only hitting .225 off of him.
He will pitch the entire season at age 18.

Great insights, Jason!
Thanks for the detailed information. Your discussion of the middle infield prospects was particularly useful. Is there another system in baseball with that type of depth at the 2B/SS positions? Anyway, I look forward to your next installment of the minors mailbag.

No problem at all.
I’m at about 70 right now specifically for the Rangers’ site. Scout subscribers (even the college ones) are able to read all of the sites on the network. I started doing the site last year and this time last year, I had probably 20 subscribers. Felt like I was writing to just two or three people, heh. It has started to pick up this year, though, I guess as people have gotten to know the site.
That’s part of the reason I’ve been so big on going out and actually seeing people. I realize the $80/year subscription fee isn’t exactly chump change, so I figure if I’m going to convince people to buy a subscription, I better make it worth the price (sounds cheesy, I know). Either way, I wouldn’t feel comfortable talking about stuff I haven’t seen in person and don’t feel confident in.
But thanks for the feedback, guys. I should have the second one up sometime on Saturday. I’m planning on flying out to the Bay Area to see Bakersfield next week, so the third one should be out sometime during that trip.

catcher depth
Hey Jason, will we see Greene, Tracy, and Santana at catcher during the second half? Can you offer any insight into why they have been switched to other positions? Can Tracy and /or Greene become major league catchers? It would seem that they are all much more valuable as catchers especially now since our top catchers are all above AA now (and some of those surely to be traded) leaving the lower levels less crowded.

Really enjoyed reading this. Looking forward to parts 2 and 3.
It appears Santana has made some adjustments. In April/May he had 113 AB and 54 K, which is a K in a little over 2 AB. In June/July he has had 89 AB and 24 K, which is a K in 3.7 AB. To be certain it is still horrible to K once every 4 AB, but he has reduced his K-rate by half. I think that’s a pretty impressive adjustment for a 19-yo.
Also, it was nice to hear how Ballard had gone about improving his statistics. Sounds like a promising development.
Go Rangers!

Beaven
This caught my eye: “I think it’s safe to say that Beavan will never sit in the mid-90s with his fastball, but I would bet for a return to the low-90s with the ability to top out in the 95-96 range. Sort of like what we see with Eric Hurley today.”
Um, wasn’t he supposed to be a mid-90’s guy-putting aside the new workload? Wasn’t he supposed to be a hard-throwing potential ace? If you’re right, I for one will be very disappointed-just like I am by all of the Hurley-equals-Rick-Helling talk.

that was my reaction to reading that as well. seems that when he was drafted it was as the hard throwing potential ace.

You can be a potential ace
without throwing mid-90s all the time. There are quite a few aces who pitch in the low-90s and occasionally hit the mid 90s.

not what i was saying.
i was trying to say, he was billed as a mid 90s hard thrower.
i know you can be an ace without throwing that hard.

a thrower. He is becoming a pitcher. He is a 19 year old in full season ball and he is more than holding his own. Pretty impressive.

Well, this is encouraging! Hope to see him return to the mound in several rehab starts in Frisco too. If all goes well, he might be ready by the first week in August.
