Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Jason Cole mailbag

Jason Cole linked this in the sidebar last night, but for those who didn't see it, he has a Q&A up in the free section of his site.

Some good stuff on Blake Beavan's low K rate, Cristian Santana's power potential, and the young middle infielders, among other things...

Check it out...

Am I the only one

that has a Brandon Boggs / Wes Littleton moment when you think about Marcus Lemon?

black/white

I think he is referring to the fact that alot of people who had only heard their names and never seen their pics thought they were a different race than what they are.

Oh, yah

I figured that, I was just wondering how he could be surprised Chet Lemon’s son was black.

I usually assume that when black parents have babies, the babies are gonna be black.

Apparently that Florida State University “education” isn’t really paying big dividends for Troy yet ;)

ouch...

haha, I just didn’t know anything about Lemon. Name alone, I just didn’t know any better.

I’m actually about to graduate with my Master’s in a few weeks… scary, huh?

encouraging commentary on ballard

man, if our fringe prospects can turn into prospects, that would make it even more exciting to pay attention to the minors.

guys surprising

There have been several of those this year. I think most of us are surprised at the numbers put up by Vallejo, Osuna, Gac, Kennil Gomez, Hunter, and Laughter this year. Maybe Moreland belongs on there, too.

On the disappointment side we have Whittleman, Castillo, and Santana, though it looks like he might be coming around, Zach Phillips, I don’t know, any others?

Many more suprises than

disappointments this season, IMO. Very encouraging for the scouts & talent eval guys.

Poveda might be a mild disappointment.

JMJ might be a mild surprise.
Holland might be a surprise.

Dutch

is a stunner, IMO.

I'm not that surprised

by Holland, though I didn’t think he’d come on quite this strongly.

He seems to agree with me on Beavan

I’m not worried about the low K totals since he’s also not walking guys and has a low ERA. I’d be worried if he wasn’t getting the strikeouts but was walking a lot of guys and/or was getting hit all over the park.

He needs to try and settle on down

IMO… i thhink he gets a bit nervous at times with runners on the bases. I know this can happen quite a bit early on. But it could become a serious problem. He needs try to relax, settle down and stay focused (yes, I know. easier said than done) when he’s got runners on. But damn, he’s getting hammered when he’s got runners on and in scoring position.

Incorrect

With men on base, Beavan has a .94 WHIP and is only allowing a .618 OPS against. With RISP, Beavan has a .90 WHIP and is only allowing a .626 OPS against.

Beavan actually performs better with runners on base.

by jparks77 on Jul 18, 2008 9:01 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm not incorrect

He’s giving up quite a bit of runs with men on base and in scoring position.

His ERA is near 5.00 with runners on and that’s not very good. And neither ishis ERA (7.08) with runners in scoring postion. He’s not pitching well with RISP. He’s given up 18 earned runs in 33 IP with runners on and in 20 of those innings pitched, 16 of those earned runs have came with RISP. Also, nearly half his 9 HR he’s gave up have been with runners on.

It’s ugly… he’s losing control with runners on. He needs to get his shit straightened out real quick.

If you think he’s performing better with runners on base then I’m extremely confused at your thinking on this.

If you think he’s performing better with runners on base then I’m extremely confused at your thinking on this.

MLB pitchers, as a whole, have an ERA of almost 9 with RISP, and an ERA of 6.68 with runners on. The reason why ERAs are so much higher with runners on and RISP is because those are the situations when most runners score.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/aggregate?sort=ERA&split=39&group=9&season=2008&seasonType=2&statType=pitching&type=reg

He’s not “losing control” with runners on base. Like Jason said, he’s doing better with runners on, not worse.

Alllllrighty then...

I’m extremely confused at my thinking on this. Then again, that’s nothing new for me.
