LSB Community Prospect Project: Mid-Season #14
After 191 votes, Julio Borbon has won the right to be called the LSB Community #13 prospect!
The list so far:
1. 1b, Chris Davis
2. RHP, Neftali Feliz
3. RHP, Eric Hurley
4. SS, Elvis Andrus
5. C, Maximiliano Ramirez
6. 1b, Justin Smoak
7. RHP, Michael Main
8. RHP, Blake "C-Wun" Beavan
9. C, Taylor Teagarden
10. LHP Kasey Kiker
11. OF, Engel Beltre
12. LHP, Matt Harrison
13. OF, Julio Borbon
Time to move on to the next vote.
The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.
And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.
NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who are currently in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect right now, so he goes on the list. It's that simple.

how is feliz behind davis?
Kinsler is the best player on the rangers(done), BENOIT SUCKS(done), bring up Harrison(done),new: Put Nippert in rotation, Mendoza to the pen, get Feliz to AAA by the end of the year, trade cat
Because while Feliz may be Walter Johnson
Davis is Babe Ruth.

ya 8 hr in your first 18 games is pretty hard to beat
was it just me or when davis hit that homer today was the ball still traveling up
Kinsler is the best player on the rangers(done), BENOIT SUCKS(done), bring up Harrison(done),new: Put Nippert in rotation, Mendoza to the pen, get Feliz to AAA by the end of the year, trade cat
edit: i mean when he hit that homer and the ball hit the blue thing was the ball still traveling up

This is really, really tough
I’ve been voting for Borbon the last several polls and I have no idea who to vote for now. I could see a case for any number of guys here. Font, NeRa, Hunter, Ross, Dutch, Perez, Lil’ Lemon, Vallejo, JMJ or even Thomas Diamond.
I’ll probably go with Font just cause his Tremendous Upside Potential is off the freaking charts. But it’s tough to vote for someone who may or may not die of arm relayed AIDS before he ever pitches in a full season league. I’ll have to mull this one over.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
Vote for Hunter.
Near MLB ready 2 or 3 at 14? Gotta go Hunter here.
"Mr. Hicks, you watch, I'm going to be a leader on this team." Kinsler
Wilmer's my boy
But I have to go with Hunter, what with Font’s troubles getting on the field this year.

.501 or bust!
Yeah
I’m kind of stumped too. I really love high upside and ceiling, and from that standpoint Wilmer Font fits that bill the best of the remaining guys here… but I don’t think I can vote for Font just yet, simply because he hasn’t pitched this year and he’s still super-raw. Don’t get me wrong though, I still seriously heart anyone the same age as me who can throw 99 MPH.
I’d think I’ll put Derek Holland ahead of Font, not because I’m sold on all the hype yet, but because he’s been the one actually pitching and putting up numbers this year. I also considered Tommy Hunter, but I think I’ll vote for him next time (if he doesn’t win this poll, that is).
Classic iorange555: "lmao too bad i watched [the all-star game] at a friends house ;[ much funer on here"

but holland in his first BAK start, is still pitching and his line is
8 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 R, ZERO walks. i love the no walks

you left out the 9 strikeouts
"Here comes the version of Benoit that lets the other team put it out of reach. I hate that version."
-Athos
Yup
holland should have won it last round, time to correct that oversight.
I'm sorry my parents never had me sarcamsized.
Holland by the numbers
I really like Hunter and Font, but Holland has to be the vote here. Key numbers for the 21 yr old lefthander:
2.40 ERA in 93 innings at Clinton; 1.93 ERA in two starts at Bakersfield
8.7 K/9IP in Clinton; 9 K/9IP in Bakersfield
2.8 W/9IP in Clinton; 1.3 W/9IP in Bakersfield
1.13 WHIP at Clinton; 0.64 WHIP at Bakersfield
2 HR allowed in 107 innings
His 93-96 MPH fastball combined with a reportedly above average change-up and strikeout-inducing slider are the stuff of top-of-the rotation starters. IMHO, Holland has surpassed Beaven/Main/Kiker/NeRa/Hurley/Hunter/Harrison/Boscan and joined Feliz and Font as the most exciting pitching prospects in the Rangers system.

Kinsler is the best player on the rangers(done), BENOIT SUCKS(done), bring up Harrison(done),new: Put Nippert in rotation, Mendoza to the pen, get Feliz to AAA by the end of the year, trade cat
The timing of this poll...
I predict a blowout for Dutch.
(I voted for Dutch too).
Holland should be ahead of 6 or 7 guys already on the list.

.501 or bust!
I'll play
I realize that I wasn’t asked for my prospect list, but I’ll post mine anyway just because I like the discussion that typically follows a Top30 list.
(1) Davis
(2) Feliz
(3) Smoak
(4) MaxRam
(5) Hurley
(6) Andrus
(7) Main
(8) Holland
(9) Kiker
(10) Beavan
(11) Teagarden
(12) Font
(13) Harrison
(14) Hunter
(15) Beltre
(16) NeRa
(17) M. Perez
(18) Boscan
(19) Borbon
(20) Madrigal
(21) Poveda
(22) Diamond
(23) Lemon
(24) Vallejo
(25) Mayberry
(26) K Gomez
(27) Moreland
(28) Ross
(29) Reed
(30) Osuna
Just off the list – Beau Jones, Gac, Weiland, Bleier, Laughter, Pina, B Harrison, C Pimental, T Murphy
Rising – Holland, Boscan, Perez, Moreland, Osuna, B. Jones
Falling – Mayberry, Poveda, Reed
Likely to have a meteoric rise in the next 12 months – Font, Beltre, Moreland, Ross, Perez
Not bad...
but Borbon and Beltre need to be higher.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Who are the 6 or 7 guys...
...up there now that Holland and Hunter should be ahead of?
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 20, 2008 12:34 PM CDT up reply actions
I think you might have a case
for Borbon and Harrison (to me, at least) but that’s it. As much as I like Holland, and as much as I appreciate what Hunter has done this year, you just can’t rank them any higher right now.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
I think after the top 6...
...there are about 12 guys who you could rank anywhere from #7 to #18, and it would be defensible.
Personally, I think there is a pretty clear set of tiers—the top 3 (who should be Davis, Smoak, and Feliz, in some order), then the next three (Andrus, Hurley, Max), and then the rest of the top 20, who are, while not interchangeable, part of a big mass of prospects that can’t clearly be delineated like the first two sets of 3.
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 20, 2008 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions
Well said
And, furthermore, any of the guys in the third group would have to do a lot to break through into the next group.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
that's not entirely impossible
That’s pretty much what MaxRam did this season. Most of those guys just need to either meet expectations or surpass them next season to at least be in that 2nd tier of talent that Adam mentioned.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Right
but that’s next year. I meant this year. Of course, if someone like Beltre or Holland really dominates for the next 6 weeks, like Max did this year, then you might have them bumping up there in the offseason.
Next year, assuming Davis, Max and Hurley all lose their prospect status by sticking in the majors, it will be more wide open with Feliz, Smoak and Andrus comfortable on top.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
yeah
I thought you were just talking about the near future, not necessarily the last month or so of the season. In that case, they’ll have to go on a Cruz/Davis like tear to be in that next level.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Exactly
MaxRam did a lot.

Yep
Holland is good but Hunter is getting buried in this prospect this because he doesn’t wow anybody. He’s about to go from drafted to the majors in a year…...... I know he was supposed to move quickly but doing that in one year is very very hard to do.
"Mr. Hicks, you watch, I'm going to be a leader on this team." Kinsler
Yes...
but I think Hunter could be a very valuable ML starter.
He may not have Feliz type stuff, but he could be up shortly and contribute a lot imo.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
My first thought
How much worse could he be than Millwood?
Millwood seems prone to the big 5th or 6th. Maybe Hunter is a steadier trickle of runs.
But would his ERA be so much worse than Milly’s?
Go Strangers.
by hightowersmith on Jul 20, 2008 1:10 AM CDT up reply actions
at this rate
they may give up the same number of runs but Hunter will pitch another inning or two and at least not be a burden to the bullpen. It’s probably just as well he has to be near his innings pitched ceiling. They shouldn’t start his clock and have to add him to the 40 this much earlier for a lost season. At this rate though he may be the first guy called up next year if they don’t want to go the Mathis, Murry, Gabbard route.
I agree...
although I don’t think he should be in the rotaion ‘til next year.
He will probably do better than a 1.75 WHIP as well. It’s not like Millwood is setting the bar that high right now. I know many of us have gotten used to pitchers with ERA’s above 5 but a sub 5 ERA should not be too much to ask for should it?
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates

The facist oppression of Dutch ends now.
Free Holland. Then buy what the Hunter is selling or go home.
Is Derek Holland the pitching equivalent of Chris Davis?
Is Spike Lundberg the pitching equivalent of Crash Davis?
Go Rangers!
Note from Lucas' 7/20 farm report
Since Clinton’s mid-June All-Star break, Holland has pitched 40.2 innings, allowed 24 hits, walked four, and struck out 47.
Dude has figured out something.
Go Rangers!
Another thing about Dutch that catches my eye
He gave up 7 homers in 67 innings last year in Spokane. This year? 2 homers in 93 innings.
I remember last year he was still developing a changeup to go along with his fastball/slider – based on how he’s taken off of late, one would guess he’s gotten the change figured out now.
Classic iorange555: "lmao too bad i watched [the all-star game] at a friends house ;[ much funer on here"
Holland’s 4th BAK start should be against Visalia AGAIN for the third time in four Cal League starts. And his 5th BAK start should be AT Lancaster – where ERA’s go to die. Gulp. Sink or swim, Dutch.
Visalia
You mention them because they’re good offensively? Discount the results because Holland’s familiar with them? Accentuate because they’re familiar with him?
Go Strangers.
by hightowersmith on Jul 20, 2008 9:51 AM CDT up reply actions
Vaisala has the worst offense in the Cal league.
But, usually it becomes harder to get hitters out as they see a pitcher more often and gain familiarity with his tendencies and repertoire.
Go Rangers!
Right - the familiarity factor
BTW, Holland’s next start comes against San Jose – a team that has pounded the crap outta BAK all season long.
Even if he gets crap pounded out of him
I’ll still think he might be ranked too low here.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
