LSB Community Prospect Project: Mid-Season #14
After 191 votes, Julio Borbon has won the right to be called the LSB Community #13 prospect!
The list so far:
1. 1b, Chris Davis
2. RHP, Neftali Feliz
3. RHP, Eric Hurley
4. SS, Elvis Andrus
5. C, Maximiliano Ramirez
6. 1b, Justin Smoak
7. RHP, Michael Main
8. RHP, Blake "C-Wun" Beavan
9. C, Taylor Teagarden
10. LHP Kasey Kiker
11. OF, Engel Beltre
12. LHP, Matt Harrison
13. OF, Julio Borbon
Time to move on to the next vote.
The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.
And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.
NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who are currently in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect right now, so he goes on the list. It's that simple.

This is really, really tough
I’ve been voting for Borbon the last several polls and I have no idea who to vote for now. I could see a case for any number of guys here. Font, NeRa, Hunter, Ross, Dutch, Perez, Lil’ Lemon, Vallejo, JMJ or even Thomas Diamond.
I’ll probably go with Font just cause his Tremendous Upside Potential is off the freaking charts. But it’s tough to vote for someone who may or may not die of arm relayed AIDS before he ever pitches in a full season league. I’ll have to mull this one over.

Yeah
I’m kind of stumped too. I really love high upside and ceiling, and from that standpoint Wilmer Font fits that bill the best of the remaining guys here… but I don’t think I can vote for Font just yet, simply because he hasn’t pitched this year and he’s still super-raw. Don’t get me wrong though, I still seriously heart anyone the same age as me who can throw 99 MPH.
I’d think I’ll put Derek Holland ahead of Font, not because I’m sold on all the hype yet, but because he’s been the one actually pitching and putting up numbers this year. I also considered Tommy Hunter, but I think I’ll vote for him next time (if he doesn’t win this poll, that is).

Holland by the numbers
I really like Hunter and Font, but Holland has to be the vote here. Key numbers for the 21 yr old lefthander:
2.40 ERA in 93 innings at Clinton; 1.93 ERA in two starts at Bakersfield
8.7 K/9IP in Clinton; 9 K/9IP in Bakersfield
2.8 W/9IP in Clinton; 1.3 W/9IP in Bakersfield
1.13 WHIP at Clinton; 0.64 WHIP at Bakersfield
2 HR allowed in 107 innings
His 93-96 MPH fastball combined with a reportedly above average change-up and strikeout-inducing slider are the stuff of top-of-the rotation starters. IMHO, Holland has surpassed Beaven/Main/Kiker/NeRa/Hurley/Hunter/Harrison/Boscan and joined Feliz and Font as the most exciting pitching prospects in the Rangers system.

I'll play
I realize that I wasn’t asked for my prospect list, but I’ll post mine anyway just because I like the discussion that typically follows a Top30 list.
(1) Davis
(2) Feliz
(3) Smoak
(4) MaxRam
(5) Hurley
(6) Andrus
(7) Main
(8) Holland
(9) Kiker
(10) Beavan
(11) Teagarden
(12) Font
(13) Harrison
(14) Hunter
(15) Beltre
(16) NeRa
(17) M. Perez
(18) Boscan
(19) Borbon
(20) Madrigal
(21) Poveda
(22) Diamond
(23) Lemon
(24) Vallejo
(25) Mayberry
(26) K Gomez
(27) Moreland
(28) Ross
(29) Reed
(30) Osuna
Just off the list – Beau Jones, Gac, Weiland, Bleier, Laughter, Pina, B Harrison, C Pimental, T Murphy
Rising – Holland, Boscan, Perez, Moreland, Osuna, B. Jones
Falling – Mayberry, Poveda, Reed
Likely to have a meteoric rise in the next 12 months – Font, Beltre, Moreland, Ross, Perez

I think after the top 6...
...there are about 12 guys who you could rank anywhere from #7 to #18, and it would be defensible.
Personally, I think there is a pretty clear set of tiers—the top 3 (who should be Davis, Smoak, and Feliz, in some order), then the next three (Andrus, Hurley, Max), and then the rest of the top 20, who are, while not interchangeable, part of a big mass of prospects that can’t clearly be delineated like the first two sets of 3.

that's not entirely impossible
That’s pretty much what MaxRam did this season. Most of those guys just need to either meet expectations or surpass them next season to at least be in that 2nd tier of talent that Adam mentioned.

Right
but that’s next year. I meant this year. Of course, if someone like Beltre or Holland really dominates for the next 6 weeks, like Max did this year, then you might have them bumping up there in the offseason.
Next year, assuming Davis, Max and Hurley all lose their prospect status by sticking in the majors, it will be more wide open with Feliz, Smoak and Andrus comfortable on top.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.

How much worse could he be than Millwood?
Millwood seems prone to the big 5th or 6th. Maybe Hunter is a steadier trickle of runs.
But would his ERA be so much worse than Milly’s?

at this rate
they may give up the same number of runs but Hunter will pitch another inning or two and at least not be a burden to the bullpen. It’s probably just as well he has to be near his innings pitched ceiling. They shouldn’t start his clock and have to add him to the 40 this much earlier for a lost season. At this rate though he may be the first guy called up next year if they don’t want to go the Mathis, Murry, Gabbard route.

although I don’t think he should be in the rotaion ‘til next year.
He will probably do better than a 1.75 WHIP as well. It’s not like Millwood is setting the bar that high right now. I know many of us have gotten used to pitchers with ERA’s above 5 but a sub 5 ERA should not be too much to ask for should it?
