A little more on Inoa
Browsing the Athletics' Nation chunk of SB Nation late, I read this and shook my head. I've already had a fairly bad day, so this wasn't fun.
From ESPN Front Page on InoaInoa and his parents turned down more lucrative offers from the Cincinnati Reds and the Texas Rangers due to Oakland’s positive results developing young pitchers. The Reds offered a $5 million signing bonus and a major league contract, while the Rangers offered $5.2 million, according to Inoa.
“After careful thought, my parents and I decided that Oakland has a better pitcher development program, and that will be more important for my career in the long haul,” said Inoa, who became eligible to sign with any major league ballclub on Tuesday at the strike of midnight.
Inoa (6 foot 7, 210 pounds) is a right-handed hurler with a three-pitch repertoire consisting of a fastball (93 mph), changeup and curveball.
A’s general manager Billy Beane was expected to make an official announcement Wednesday at noon from Santo Domingo.
“I think the personal treatment that Beane put into this was the determining factor so that Inoa’s parents opted to stay with Oakland even though there were higher offers,” said Edgar Mercedes, president of the Born to Play baseball academy where Inoa played since he was 12.

along those lines
i don’t know why people are so willing to vote in fukudome into the all star game since he basically spurned us even though we offered more money.

What's wrong with that?
Fuku “spurned” other clubs, too.
Heck, Fuku even spurned a more lucrative offer from the other Chicago team, apparently.
I have no problem with a guy wanting to play somewhere and taking less money to do so.
How much did we offer Fuku, btw? I don’t remember if I ever heard a solid number on that.

Well god damn it
I like that we were big balling it down there, but to lose out like that really hurts.

Developing Pitchers
Well, if the reason that he turned down the Rangers is because of their track record with pitching, this could change for the Rangers. Of all the young pitchers they have in the minors, they won’t get a trio like Hudson/Zito/Mulder, but a few years of great pitching goes a long way in changing perception.

Major League contract by the Reds?
Good god that’s ridiculous.

Beyond ridiculous
He’s 16. That’s simply stupid.
This is actually good news, though. Shows me that the team is not afraid of putting money into player development.

Inoa
I have to hand it to the kid and his advisers, if they genuinely went with the a’s because they feel that team is better at developing pitchers then good for them
better to go to a situation right for development, than a place that he wouldn’t quite feel as comfortable being just because they offered the most money.

Yeah
If there’s no funny money going to his handlers and he made this decision based on what he says then I really admire the guy. not just cashing in but planning on making it. Hard to argue in favor of Texas or Cincy’s track record vs oakland.

so, now...
....that we’ve shown we’ve got some jack to spend on signing some players do we turn that 5.2 mil into armstrong, ross, and martinez? wouldn’t those three have a better shot of success than just him? understand the whole “generational” talent thing… but i’d argue though he’s more likely to succeed, the odds are better by signing those 3 that at least one will succeed, and it would cost the same…
How this guy can know what J. D. and Adam are thinking at those exact moments is beyond me. Track record?
We developed the fucking Cy Young of the NL.
John Danks is dominating still.
Hell even Galagaraa is doing good.
WE DO develop good pitching, even if it is not for our own team.

I'm sure...
He’s thinking along the lines of Hudson/Mulder/Zito/Haren/Harden moreso than three guys who point briefly played for the Rangers….
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."

Harden
I don’t think Harden went to school. He was from Canada and I’m just going to assume they don’t have colleges there.

The Rangers are about to be known as a team that can develop pitching,
because a significant part of developing pitching is to obtain pitching talent. The Rangers have stockpiled a significant amount of pitching talent. it will seem that they suddenly became a haven for pitching in a few years.
Go Rangers!

Oakland broke the rules and cut a deal before they were allowed
Seems pretty blatant. This has been known for weeks. The kid’s quotes last night are obviously a smokescreen.
Apparently you can break the rules without any consequences.

Uh, no
You can negotiate with guys before the deadline. You just can’t sign them. Think of it like the college football recruiting season. Inoa made a verbal commit, but in the end it’s meaningless unless he actually signs with them on signing day, which he’s under no legal obligation to do.

Even though the Rangers didn't get him...
at least it’s some consolation that they put their money where their mouth is. If they’d offered him, say, $2.5 million and everyone else offered $4 million or $5 million, I’d be a little more mad.

Newberg Just Reported
...that the A’s owner repeatedly visited Inoa in person and that the other teams were told weeks ago that the deal was done. I agree: sounds fishy.

helllllllll no.

As I understand it, they’re allowed to negotiate before the deadline, just not sign.
Someone please explain to me how that’s fishy.

It's not
I think people just misunderstood the fact that you can negotiatie before the deadline. Kind of like draft picks. You can negotiate you just can’t take them.

i think theres no chance harold martinez signs
why would he? unless its just about the money
unless he gets offered like 2 mil why would he leave? if in his mind (and agent/families) he is a top 10 pick why would he “settle” for 2 mil?
also: how many high profile miami baseball players FROM miami pass it up after they have a shitty year? i would think VERY few.
(and keep in mind i did a ton of research on him right after he was drafted/put it into a fanshot/diary/whatever)
i just dont see any aadvantage for him to sign with us if he truly does think he is a top 10 or 15 pick

Padres and International Players
Paul DePodesta announced today on his blog that the Padres have just signed 5 highly rated international players. The grand total for these players is just under $4 million. According to the ESPN rankings of unsigned Latin American players, the Padres got players ranked at numbers 3,5,6, and 10, plus a kid from Perth, Australia. In addition to the comments on the ESPN page, DePodesta also gives some of his own comments on these newly signed players.

I want us to spend money down there like it’s going out of style.
I like our “throw a bunch of good talents against the wall” style, but I’d like to mix in a few top-end 1million+ bonus babies in there, too.

about the guy from perth, aust.
Corey Adamson is a 16-year old infielder/outfielder from Perth, Australia. Known as a 5-tool athlete (runs a 6.6 60), Corey has already produced with those tools. In the National Championship Tournament in January, Corey hit .520 with a .618 obp and a 1.040 slugging percentage. Due to his athleticism, Corey was also projected as a top 10 selection in the Australian Rules Football draft, however he has chosen baseball. This choice wasn’t terribly surprising given the fact that Corey’s father, Tony, is in Australia’s Baseball Hall of Fame.
impressive.

Kid is smart
to go to a team based on a track record of producing pitchers. Only track record Texas has is as the franchise that pitchers seem to get much better after they leave.

Good and Bad...
Obviously it sucks that the kid signed with Oakland.
However I’m encouraged that the Rangers outbid everyone and I think it shows that Hicks will commit to spending big money on some of these Latin kids. This could be a good sign for the future in situations like this. Even if this kid didn’t take the extra money I would think that many would.
