Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Dear Jon Daniels: This is NOT The Year!!!

I heard a nasty rumor about the Rangers pursuing CC Sabithina, and a hint the Rangers brass believes they have something special this year and may make a run for the playoffs. DO TOM HICKS & JON DANIELS HATE US AS RANGERS FANS?!?!?!

I've been a Rangers fan since 1980, and only this year have I become accustomed to the notion of building for a better future in a couple of years. These Rangers have been a pleasure to watch the last couple of months, but are in no way ready to make a playoff run. Say the improbable happens and they overtake the Angels or get a wild card seat. Then what? You have a team full of young, inexperienced players who will likely flame out when the pressure of the post season begins. I believe in this bunch, but not yet. Josh Hamilton is hitting a wall, Chris Davis is still in his second week as a major leaguer, and our pitching staff has been in a state of flux all year.

Tom Hicks is among the worst owners in baseball, and despite some good work in the last 12 months, Jon Daniels has one of the worst track records in the majors. The last time he tried to get cute and stray from the rebuilding path, we got Brandon "I love the training room" McCarthy in exchange for John "I'm a front line starter for the next 12 years" Danks.

Tom & Jon, you've started something that may be special in two years. Don't screw it up now!!!

No this is not "the year"

But if they make a move for Sabathia and are able to sign him. I would definatly look into that.

I agree with this

The last time he tried to get cute and stray from the rebuilding path, we got Brandon “I love the training room” McCarthy in exchange for John “I’m a front line starter for the next 12 years” Danks.

If cute means ‘over analyze’ then I agree with you. The Rangers are currently playing good baseball. They can make a run at the division. However, I don’t want the 2008-2009 Rangers to be a repeat of the 2007-2008 Colorado Rockies.

The 2007 Colorado Rockies

made the World Series – something the rangers have never done. I’d trade 3 future playoff years for one WS

Not sure

I think it would be better to be considered one of baseball’s top teams than to run the table once and be considered a fluke. Just a thought.

I'm with you on that

I hope they're looking into him

so long as Cleveland isn’t expecting the moon and Sabathia is open to an extension that doesn’t kill our budget.

How Does

being injured and liking to be injured become one in the same? I understand schtick but don’t believe your own.

Let me clarify...

I don’t have a problem with McCarthy… provided he pitches this year. What irritates me about the whole trade, besides it happening at all, is that we traded a fiercely competitive pitcher who thrives on self-improvement for a guy who likes to sleep until 20 minutes before he has to be at the ballpark (his own words). There’s a lot more to being a great pitcher than talent, Danks is proof of that. It would be great to see a bit more urgency from McCarthy.

Does Danks

hit the blocking sled before going to the bullpen to warm up? My guess is there are many HOF pitchers who got plenty of sleep before they went out to pitch. Baseball does not require a football mentality even though we have been indoctrinated that the NFL mindset is the be-all, end-all. The football mentality can work but is not a necessity for baseball.
BTW, I like Danks and wish that we hadn’t traded him.

Only part about the trade that bothered me then

was that Danks was a lefty and we traded for a right-hander, otherwise I had no problem trading for a guy who had shown success in the majors for a guy still in the minors. Obviously I wouldn’t have made that trade then but if McCarthy recovers and can pitch again (Be it though TJ surgery or otherwise) I think we’ll quickly get over the trade, much the same way people forgot about Cordero.

Correction

Obviously I wouldn’t have made that trade then—> Obviously I wouldn’t make the trade now

Rangers are out on Sabathia

according to Gammons, via mlbtraderumors (posted yesterday).

So everyone can breath a little easier about selling the farm for him.

Thank God

He’d have blown 80% of Tom Hicks’ budget.
