JD listening to offers for Padilla
Apparently teams have contacted JD about acquiring Padilla... including the Mets, Yankees, and Brewers. JD is looking for "quality young pitching". Really... that's a stunner.
If JD is receiving offers, what do you all think he should settle for? Yankees: Horne or Ohlendorf plus a midlevel IF prospect... maybe more. Mets: target Deolis Guerra and stand by your guns. Demand it. Minaya is a desperate SOB. Brew crew: Manny Parra or Matt LaPorta. LaPorta hits for average and is a beasticon of the Chris Davis type. Pie in the sky, but the Brewers are rarely this much in the mix, so they may decide now is the time to go for it.

Good move by JD.
You can never have enough quality arms especially if we are giving up our best pitcher this year.
Chris Davis is a beast.

Id go after
Ian Kennedy with the Yanks
by booyahcaveman on Jul 2, 2008 5:51 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Why> Kennedy has already proven that he is at best a back of the rotation guy...

Well there's
good back of the rotation and bad back of the rotation. Maybe IPK is the worthwhile kind.

Yeah i guess
12 starts in the majors at 22 and 23 really proves that. Damn….

I think the Rosenthal story was covered yesterday.
- It’d be hard to get Guerra from the Mets considering they traded him to the Twins.
- Horne’s hurt and potentially out for the season, and I’d want way more than Ohlendorf. Anything with the Yanks would probably involve Austin Jackson.
- I doubt the Brewers give up LaPorta, and they sure as shit wouldn’t give up Parra. They’re rumored to be listening to offers for Prince this offseason, with a view to squeezing LaPorta + Gamel in their lineup somehow.
If there was one team I’d try to pin Padilla on right now, based purely on need, it’d probably be Philly.

+1 for you
-1 for me. I was looking at their rankings earlier this year.

beat me to it
the brewers have a decent farm system, but are not going to trade laporta and maybe not gamel, at least probably not for padilla, and his defense is awful so im not sure we have a place for him without bumping someone else. Thats a good problem to have, but as experienced with salty, sometimes its just better to go get the pitching you want.
As far as the yanks go, their farm system is way overrated. I want no part of kennedy and outside of austin jackson and hughes (if you still count him) they have no prospects that interest me. Tabata is okay, but overrated more than any other, joba is untouchable, and you dont trade in your best trade chip for relief prospects, i.e. melancon, cox, etc.

I can't see the Brews
trading LaPorta…That would be sick to get him…I would flip him for a stud SP prospect.

if we move padilla
it’s going to be for something pretty big…I doubt we do. Rich Hill, Sean Gallagher for Padilla and Byrd?

Why would you want Rich Hill?
A 28 year old with one decent big league season to his name, and a complete disaster at every stop to this point in 2008?
No thanks…

Rich Hill
I would love to get Rich Hill right now. He’s 28, may not even be arbitration eligible this offseason, has career ERA+ of 106, and is lefthanded.
I had a similar trade thought the other day, except that it was Padilla and Byrd for Hill and Felix Pie.
Basically, in a year when Cubs are looking to win, try to steal two guys that Lou Piniella has basically buried.

Pie?
why would you want felix pie? that would be ridiculous. The Rangers for one, dont need help in the outfield, two, wouldn’t get a player like pie, who can’t hit and is overrated defensively, and three, if you trade for hill and pie, how is that anywhere close to equal value as a solid #3, at worst, starter? And you want to throw in byrd as well?

I wouldn't mind
a stud CFer. We don’t know Bradley’s future, and after Hamilton, not one of the other guys is just lighting it up. I’d love to have a stud CFer with Hamilton in RF and maybe some combination of Murphy, Mayberry and Boggs in left. But I wouldn’t get overconfident with those three, thinking that you’re going to get great play. It’s still very much in doubt as to whether any can be above average.
Now, is Pie that guy? I don’t know. He’s probably more likely to be than Borbon, though.
All of that said, ideally, I want as good of a pitcher as I can get back if I deal Padilla, rather than a CF leading the deal.

3-way trade bringing back McCutcheon

I loves me some "Royce" McCutchen
But the guy’s a grade A stud CF prospect.
It’d take quite a haul to get him out of there, and I’m not sure we’re a good match with Pitt.

Yeah, that is why I said 3-way
They obviously aren’t looking for the vets and shortimers they we have to offer..
But before this season started, I think it would be fair to say that Salty = McClutcheon, no?

if I were GM
I’d take him. Of course I’d ask for Gallagher too if we gave up something significant, but why wouldn’t you want a lefty that’s ONLY 28 and has a history of at least a year of success, and strikes hitters out? That’s my dream for this team – a lefty with high strikeout numbers…

I don't see Padilla being moved....
JD will ask for a teams top pitching prospect, and the team will say no.
thats where it ends.
If I am JD, I do not give in at all….I am ok with Padilla staying for the next 2 years as our #3 starter, so unless a team meets our ransom…they ain’t getting him.

That's what I tend to think
maybe there’s a good fit, though, I don’t know. I sure can’t think of one.

Concur...
There are worse things then having Padilla for the next 2 years at his current salary.

Yeah
we are all setting ourselves up for disappointment, with visions of massive returns for Padilla, Cat, Bradley, etc. Padilla and Bradley both have a better chance of staying then going, for the reason you mention—no team will offer decent value. Cat will go somewhere for a minor piece, maybe Benoit and/or Guardado. The catching trade oppo might be down the drain with Laird’s injury.
This won’t be like last July.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.

Cat
The information about the DBacks and Dodgers suggests Cat might be of use to both clubs. That to me was more interesting then the Padilla mention. As others have stated, it doesn’t make sense to give up Padilla unless we get a young pitcher in return. It doesn’t make sense for a team to give away young pitching, so it seems extremely unlikely Padilla gets dealt.

Guerra
traded to the Twins as a part of the Santana deal. I don’t think there’s anyone in the Mets system that I would be willing to take back for Padilla.
I’d much rather hang onto Padilla than trade him to any of those three teams. He’s been our best pitcher this year, and I think it’s important for these kids to learn how to win before taking the reins. Keep him this year, and let him pitch for the big bucks next year. By that time, we can let him walk, collect the draft picks, and let the young pitchers take over.
