He was

BA: “Moreland might be drafted as a first baseman, where plus raw power is his best asset. Because he’s limited defensively and has an uppercut swing that’s full of holes, he has received more interest as a pitcher. His ceiling on the mound is also modest, but he has an aggressive approach and comes right after hitters with an 86-90 mph fastball and a curveball that has good spin. “

I was sitting here...

...trying to come up with a top 20 or top 30 prospect list, with the idea that I’d post it later this week, and I gave up.

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago when I did one.

I just can’t figure out what to do when I get to around #7.

Yeah I'm curious how high you have

Smoak. I know you love him.

Smoak

I had him third. The top six was:

Davis
Feliz
Smoak
Max
Hurley
Andrus

Then, after that, I got stuck…Vallejo, Duran, Main, Beavan, Teagarden, Hunter, Holland, Kiker, Beltre, Boscan, Font, Harrison, Lemon, JMJ, Ross, Neil Ramirez…

All of those guys, I look at and say, how can I leave one of those guys out of the top 10? If I put Main ahead of Holland, don’t I have to put Beavan ahead of Hunter? But can I also put Font and Boscan ahead of Holland and Hunter? And if I don’t, don’t I have to slot Holland and Hunter ahead of Beavan and Main? And what about Vallejo and Duran? And can I really justify having Duran that much higher than Lemon?

yup

these rankings are tough if you try to do it right.
personally i felt when it came down to it main, beavan, teagarden were all more deserving of top 10 spots so i went with them.

Yeah it's

tough to do and it seems like those bunch of guys are so close you could change their rankings every few weeks. Just look how much Holland’s stock has gone up the past few weeks.

Well I'd leave off Hurley and Davis

Both will have graduated this year because I can’t see them going back down. So for me:

Feliz
Max
Smoak
Andrus
Holland
Main
Harrison
Beltre
Kiker
Vallejo
Borbon
Hunter
Teagarden
Gomez
Beavan
Boscan
Font
Lemon
Ramirez
Duran
Diamond
JMJ
Ross
Perez

by Hull Fan on Jul 20, 2008 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

and now looking at that list

I’d switch Perez with Ross, because he’s younger and all ready pitching but we’ll really have to evaluate them after next year.

you start out hating it but then warm up to it eventually and really like it, but then towards the end of the season you really hate the idea so much that you wind up getting a migraine and have to go to the disabled list, where afterwards you never come back the same and are only a shell of the poster you once were?

Yep
Both will have graduated this year because I can’t see them going back down.

Yep, they would probably have to have a season ending injury to not get the rest of the AB/IP to use up their rookie status. Ramirez might be a little more of a question, but his status will probably be decided by whether they hang onto Teagarden in the next few days. I’d be surprised if Duran doesn’t get 28 more AB as well.

Beavan's drop of velocity

worries me. Gomez has pitched lights out till his sudden disapperance. I’m a big believer in Gomez. If I’m wrong so be it but Beavan’s going to have to prove it to me in Bakersfield next year before he rises on my list.

by Hull Fan on Jul 20, 2008 7:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Beavan's drop in velo

shouldn’t really worry you. He isn’t going to throw as hard as he did in HS. It’s not going to happen.

by jparks77 on Jul 20, 2008 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I expect him to hit 92 to 93 consistantly.

But until he does that I have him just slightly behind Gomez. I hope he does bounce back and there is a lot to pitching in games, and side sessions that he never did in High school. I’m just still skeptical. Besides Gomez ahead of him isn’t a knock on Beavan but more being bullish on Gomez.

by Hull Fan on Jul 20, 2008 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you're right...

He might have been a bad pick, and I’d rather have Porcello.

by Ajax68 on Jul 21, 2008 6:49 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Beavan is learning a new delivery and pitching on four days rest for the first time in his life

Almost all minor league pitchers suffer from a loss of velocity in their first season. Once he gets stronger, more accustomed to his new delivery and used to pitching in a rotation, the velocity will come back. He will be in the low to mid 90s again.

excuses

I really doubt a catchers lack of “framing” a pitch is going to lead to the scores you listed above. I think they have to do more with bad pitching than framing or pitch calling. As for Millwood, whenever he is pitching poorly he is annoyed (and annoying).

My guess...

...is that he’d pitch out of the bullpen…

He’s pushing 100 innings this season, after just having 42 innings last year…

My guess is that, given his age and repertoire, he’d be a July or August callup to pitch out of the bullpen next year…

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 20, 2008 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ideally

Feliz can be what David Price will probably be for Tampa this year. They don’t necessarily need him in the rotation now but he will be a great addition when they call him up and he can pitch out of the bullpen.

That would be the best thing to do in my opinion

Give him some innings out of the bullpen next September and then have him “fight” for a rotation spot in ST of 2010. The fight would basically be the same as Kinsler fighting for a starting spot from a few years ago.

Start hitting? He is hitting, with power. However, we won’t know how the rangers feel about him until the rule 5 draft. If they protect him he is still a prospect on the radar if not he get’s drafted probably.

by Goyogringo on Jul 20, 2008 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to guess...

...that he won’t be protected…

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone grabbed him, but really, he’d be hard to keep all season…no defensive value, limited to LF or DH, and a righty hitter…someone might grab him to take a look at him and then try to make a deal to keep him, but I think the chances of him getting selected in the Rule 5 and kept on a 25 man roster all season aren’t great…

the complete story about last year is...

that he played hurt and in retrospect realized he shouldn’t have. I think Jason Cole did an interview with him where he talked about it. I wouldn’t hold that against him, trying to paly hurt – look at arias last year, didn’t play at all on a shoulder that had no damage to it.

I look at him as having lost a year to injury like Diamond. Speaking of Diamond, he’ll be 26 next year and won’t challenge for a rotation spot.

by Goyogringo on Jul 20, 2008 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not really sure

but I could easily see the Red Sox waiting until the offseason to address their catching situation so maybe a Salty for Bowdein deal can go down then.

Bottom line though

JD is trading one of these catchers for somebody…and it is going to happen either at the deadline or this offseason.

Why would they wait?

Varitek = 645 ops
Cash = 681 ops

If it’s Bowden you want. Things would have to go horribly wrong for the Sox this year for Bowden to factor into 2008 plans.

by robert_d_wilfong on Jul 20, 2008 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

realistic answer though...

...can we get Bowden for Eddie and Max?

you’d probably have to throw in an A-Ball arm.

by oc on Jul 20, 2008 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

depends how much the Red Sox value those 2

They pulled off that Gagne deal, saw it blow up big time in their faces, and don’t really care much that it did. They can afford to overpay with their non-stud prospects for pieces they need.

there's only two lefties in the Boston bullpen...

i suppose they could use Eddie as a 7th inning guy… but, for someone who’ll probably only pitch an inning at a time… i don’t think Guardado is very valuable to them…

Interesting that

Despite Bowden’s great numbers this year he hasn’t cracked Keith Law’s top 100. I was talking to Law on facebook asking about him and he said:

“Apparently I’m getting slaughtered on the soxprospects forum because I’m not slobbering all over Bowden. The funny thing is that I never said he was bad, just that he’s not one of the best prospects in the game.”

KLaw is my hero,

He went and saw Bowden pitch not to long ago and came away unimpressed.

Jim (Portland, OR): KLaw, what is your opinion on Bowden now that you’ve seen him?

SportsNation Keith Law: Disappointed. He was 88-91, below average command, flashed a plus curveball that has a chance to be an out pitch. Barely used his change, which Red Sox people have told me is his best pitch. Ugly delivery. Never saw the 94 mph I’d heard he was dealing this year, and the pro scout behind me told me he’d seen Bowden twice before (in 2008) and never had him above 88-92.

This is the Texas Rangers, professional destroyers of hope, we're talking about. - BAC

Are two guys that are really overlooked because of the bigger names in the system. These guys might never be anything more than Kam Loes in the Majors, but even Kam Loe had some good stretch of baseball that helped the Rangers out. Neither are that old right now and still have plenty of time to develop, but if all we can get out of each of them is a couple of hundred solid innings out of the rotation or bullpen, then that’s not too bad.

He and philips have the worst blow-up innings of any other pitchers in the system. Try these stats on for size for Schlact:

Career 29 37 5.11 600ip 690 h 1.49whip
08 5.46era whipt 1.53
last 10 games 6.43era

I’ll take a 800+ OPS from my middle infielder that is young for his level any day. Not to mention an OBP that is 100 points higher than his Avg. He is not overhyped at all. In fact, I’d say he might be overlooked right now because of the overall strength of the system.

Looking for help: The Rangers wouldn’t seem to have a chance in the American League West, but baseball officials said over the weekend that Texas is looking to add rather than subtract this month. The Rangers no longer seem interested in trading outfielder Milton Bradley, but would apparently deal some of their outfield depth if they could get a young starting pitcher they could control for a few years.

Not that any of those guys alone could do it. But they would all 3 be sell high and could be part of a package, though not the main part. I have no problem with targeting a controllable arm…just not sure who that is. And if they do, while it may involve some of the “outfield depth”, it would have to involve one of the catchers and then some.

I believe

it was the great TheAhmad that said that a Ranger scout said he was the closest thing they got to Hammy. He needs to be up. Also, anyone see the comments after todays game? CJ really loves him some TT.

i think he might be able to hit now in the majors with his change in approach at AAA…

This is insane what he’s doing right now.

What change in approach?

His #s are almost the same as last year with a rise in walks and strikeouts and stolen bases and fewer RBIs. I’m not sure anything has changed. Everyone said the same thing last year when he was producing the same #s at AAA.

Furthermore, who do you trade or send down for the guy who has yet to produce at the Major League level: Boggs, Murphy, Byrd. And even then, he would get part-time at-bats. Enough with the 4A man love already….

Oklahoma City Thunder?

I like it.

Also, they’re prolly going to get CJ Miles. That team could get really good quick.

Wherein JP and I admit we missed the mark on Holland. We were conscious of his solid campaign at Clinton, but it wasn’t until a short while after we fired off our Top 25 that Holland Mania really kicked in with Cole/Jamey/MJH/etc.

Think that’s part of what makes mid-season prospect lists such a risky proposition – a hot hand can receive more credit than he deserves. That’s not to say that Holland doesn’t deserve a notable ranking, but I don’t think I buy him as top-10 material just yet.

Agreed...

no way he’s top 10 yet.

The thing about Holland

There is nothing negative in his profile.

He’s a power lefty that gets swinging strikes with a mid-90’s fastball, slider, and change-up.
He’s got a high K-rate and low walk rate, WHIP, avg against, and ERA. And he’s produced those stats in both of his years as a pro. This year, his ground ball rate has risen and he’s given up only 2 home runs in over 100 innings of works.

With the exception of Feliz and perhaps Main, every other Rangers pitching prospect has at least one statistical or physical characteristic that at least makes you pause. For instance:
Beavan – low K-rate
NeRa – high walk-rate
Font – shoulder/maturity(?) issues
Hunter – K-rate
Kiker – ERA, avg against
Harrison – K-rate
Hurley – ERA, avg against

Holland is a guy that you will find regardless of whether you look for him by statistical analysis or by scouting. And you will really like him when you realize that he has both stats and a scouting profile. For instance, I started following Holland last year when he was among the Northwest league leaders in K-rate and ERA. I got excited about him this year when he maintained and even improved his stats in the MWL. I got giddy when I listened to his first game in High A and heard that he was throwing 96 MPH. I imagine that the scouts who see Holland pitch and then review his statistical profile will have a similar response.

If he can maintain his peripherals in the Cal league, I also think it extremely likely that one or more national prospect writers will “discover” Holland while perusing the statistical pitching leaders in the NWL, get excited when they dig a little deeper, and ultimately place him at the back-end of their annual Top100 list. Because there are no negatives in his profile.

I don’t know that ERA should be an actual point against a guy in the minors, if everything else is there.

At any rate, I think that, at least from a scouting standpoint (rather than a statistical one), the knock on Holland would be that he has only shown the FB that he’s showing now for a short time. Velocity spikes aren’t always permanent.

by Brett Perryman on Jul 21, 2008 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

On ERA and velocity spikes

Regarding ERA, I think it tends to be a decent indicator of how well a pitcher performs with runners on base. A guy with good primary peripherals and a surprisingly high ERA tends to have a high BAA with runners on base which likely results from a drop in pitch quality when the pitcher goes to the stretch.

Regarding Holland’s velocity spike, can you or someone else comment on how recent and significant the change has been? IIRC, Holland was pitching at 91-93 last year, Hindman had him touching 94 MPH in spring training, and somebody (Jason Cole, maybe?) had mentioned that weight training had allowed him to increase velocity to the point that a couple of pitchers in Clinton (Feliz and Gomez, maybe) had taken notice. If that is the timeline, then it appears that Holland has managed to add ~3 MPH going from 20 to 21 years old and going from presumably inferior community college instruction to being under the guidance of multiple pitching coaches in the Rangers organization. I’m no expert, but that sounds like something that could be expected given Holland’s profile (small school pitcher with good athletic ability).

by spurdynasty on Jul 21, 2008 12:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That all seems reasonable

I think that he was throwing a bit harder even this spring than he was last summer, but has always been regarded as having a nice FB for a lefty. I only point it out because when guys see their velocity increase there are all kinds of good explanations for why. But when they see it decrease, there is usually a mechanical theory (that usually doesn’t bear itself out), some suggestions of injury, but generally head scratching. So while we can make perfect sense of why his velo did rise and that it was a realistic amount, unless he holds it for over a year, I don’t think that we can discount the possibility that it doesn’t stick.

Fair enough

Thanks for your comments, by the way. I really value your insights and have learned a lot from you and Shroom among others on this board in the last couple of years. Keep up the good work!

Bush, former managing partner of the Texas Rangers, also rues the day his old team traded Danks for Brandon McCarthy.

Danks does not really know how Bush began following his career. The obvious connections are their Rangers connections and Danks’ former status as a high-school All-American pitcher out of Round Rock, Texas, near Austin, where Bush lived for six years while he was governor of Texas.
