K Rod??
Rumored to be looking for a 5 year deal worth 75 mill, should Texas make a run at one of the Angels biggest impact players? K-Rod will be 27 years old. He is possibly the biggest difference maker on the free agent market this off season. We could move Wilson to the eighth inning. This would give the Rangers one of the top bullpens in the league for the next few years. I know that starting pitching is our biggest need but, with the best available player doctorine JD preaches, isn't this a no brainer?

Not for that much I wouldn't,
and I’d be suprised if any team does that for a guy who works only one inning. Five year 60 mil tops is what he gets, imo.

Health?
Isn’t he a health time bomb? That motion, his build?

i prefer it
to a slow and controlled motion like a dan haren. less stress on the arm.

No No No No No No No!!!!!!!
I’d say No a hundred times if it helped convince you
He’s looking at being a ridiculously overpaid guy whose arm may fall off at any instant. He sounds to me like a classic Angels signing, or San Fran signing. Better not be a Ranger signing…
Ugh… nightmares.

Cut about two years and $40 million off that contract and I'll listen
Not that he’s a bad closer, but even a bad closer would have 30-35 saves at a minimum with as many opportunities as K-Rod has gotten 40 out of. Assuming eight blown saves instead of three, the Angels would still lead the division.

I agree with Will Carroll
He has great Francisco Cordero potential … as do most closers. There’s also a lot of talk at HH about a very self-centered personality.

What best available player doctrine?
You mean in the draft? I’m confused.
by LiamP on Jul 21, 2008 2:07 PM CDT 0 recs
Yes, the same one
I know that it has been used in the draft. I was simply applying it here too. If that is too far of a reach, how about using the impact player through free agency doctrine, like with Gagne 2 winters ago.

I don't understand.
Best player available only makes sense in the context of a draft.
Gagne wasn’t an “impact player” acquisition. He was a “let’s hope he rediscovers some of his previous form so we can flip him at the deadline” acquisition.
The closest “doctrine” that could be applied to signing a guy like KRod is ””don’t pay out the ass for closers”.

Quote from JD himself
This isn’t me talking. These were JD’s words after the signing. In addition, we were in a totally different situation at that time then I expect this team to be at the deadline next year. Simply put, Is KRod the biggest impact player on the market this off season? I think so. Would he make the Rangers a better team? Without question.

"biggest impact player on the market"?
I doubt it.
I think this team is far more than a KRod away from going to the playoffs. CJ has been erratic and scary all year, but we aren’t 10 games out because of him.
Maybe you could argue that having KRod allows us to stick CJ in a setup role, and that saves a few games. But that is a stretch.
The Rangers win using their offense. This means that their scores have a much higher variance than a pitching-focused club. This means fewer 1 or 2 run games and more 4 or 5 run games (in both directions), lowering the utility of a closer. Low offense teams like the A’s and Dodgers need an impact closer, not the Rangers

God I hope The Giants sign him.
Just imagine how much fun it will be in 6 years when they look back and realize they paid $200 million to two pitchers whose arms completely fell off.

While I don’t think that CJ is the closer of the future for us I think we should have some other internal candidates emerge like Madrigal or Thomas Diamond or even someone else.

No
I don’t mind the idea paying for an elite shut-down closer, cause I think having a lights-out closer in the playoffs is a huge advantage, but it would have to be the perfect situation and it would have to be the absolute perfect closer.
This is not that perfect situation, and K-Rod is not the perfect closer due to his injury concerns.
I’d much rather us take that 15mm and put it towards signing CC or Ben Sheets.

K-shod is no Rivera, and he acts like a tool out there. I know his save numbers are good but otherwise his numbers are down.

You're right, he isn't
Rivera is nearing the end of his career, while KRod is entering his prime. It’s been a season or 2 since Rivera was in his league.

Last 3 years
ERA+
Rivera: 251, 142, 337
KRod: 264, 162, 184
WHIP:
Rivera: 0.96, 1.21, 0.67
KRod: 1.10, 1.25, 1.25
Hands down? I don’t think so.

No doubt
Rivera has been better. You probably can make a case that KRod will be better over the next three years, given Rivera’s age, but he sure as hell isn’t going to be worth $75m.

We don’t need to spend that kind of money on a pitcher that pitches one inning on those occurrences when we have a 3 run or less lead going into the 9th.

JD and Hicks should go all out
Sign CC, Sheets, K-Rod, resign Bradley. Those 4 should go for a combine 60M a year?
I would trade or let go Millwood, Padilla, Laird, Guardado, Byrd, Jennings, and Cat. Padilla would be an awesome #3 but his 11M salary makes the 60M easier to swallow. All those guys would free up something like 35M.
Bradley is making 5M now and I put into estimates that he would get something like 3 years at 10m a year. So you would only have to add 5M to the total.
So that means would would be able to add CC, Sheets, K-Rod, and Bradley’s extension for like 20M. That’s pretty good!!!
This is also not putting into account that you have players that get raises like MY.
Players added vs. players subtracted
CC > Millwood
Sheets > Padilla
K-Rod > Guardado – CJ taking Guardado’s spot.
Bradley = Bradley
Salty/Teag/Max > Laird
Boggs/Murphy = Byrd/Cat
Jennings is crap
That’s an awesome improvement for a 20M increase.
by Coolbean04 on Jul 21, 2008 4:25 PM CDT 0 recs
When I said player raises like MY
I mean the salary might go up too significant where Hicks wouldn’t want to add an additional 20M on top of it.

Impossible
Rules dictate you can’t sign more than 2 type A FA in a single season so you could only choose 2 of those 4.
