2009 Rotation?!?
Maybe I'm drinking the Kool-aid, but I really can see the Rangers being competitive (and I don't just mean in the West) next year if they can piece together a solid rotation. I'm mildly concerned about what they'll do at 3B, C and RF/DH - but I think there are multiple solutions to each of those situations (including internal options) that leave us with a top offense again next year. A few things need to happen with the bullpen, but again, we've got a lot of options. If - somehow - some way - JD, Nolan, and company can trade for, sign, develop, and nurse to health a solid (top 15) rotation the Texas Rangers could be a real force in the AL. Agree or Disagree?
Either way, here are a few more questions:
Who from our current rotation do you hope/expect to be a part of the 09 rotation (and at what 'spot')?
Who from the minors do you expect to be ready to contribute at some point next year?
What would you like to see the Rangers do at the trade deadline and in the off season to put the 09/10 Rangers on course for contention? (Please - no calls for Hicks to spend $120M, no trades for Santana and Halladay... only realistic options you could see the club pursuing).

"we'll be competitive if we can piece together a solid rotation"
Couldn’t every team in the ML say the same thing?
Start a list with everybody currently in the organization that you feel is a good bet to pitch 200 innings in the starting rotation next year and get back to me with that list.
Hurley and Padilla might have a reasonable shot of posting a couple hundred innings each (though I would probably bet the under), after that it is likely to be the same thing that we have seen for the last decade.

"Couldn’t every team in the ML say the same thing?"
No, tricer, I really don’t think so. The A’s and Blue Jays are currently 1st and 3rd in team ERA, 1st and 5th in Starting Pitcher ERA, and 5th and 2nd in starter IP. No one (not even their GMs) consider them serious contenders.
And as I stated, by “solid”, I’m not looking for a top 5 rotation. Just something in the top half of the league. The Padres, Braves, Indians and many others have top 15 rotations without being anywhere near threats to win it all.

you're right
we just need to have some guys that can be counted on to take the ball every fifth day and give the offense a reasonable chance. Unfortunately, I don’t see many guys currently in the organization that look like good bets to do that consistently next year.
When the team has an ace, and then 3 guys following him that can post a composite of 600 innings and a 100 ERA+, then we will really have a chance to do something.

I'll play
The rotation needs major work
The bullpen needs significant work
1. Trade Millwood for whatever you can get – he’s not taking this team to the playoffs
2. Use Millwood money to aggressively go after Sheets (my preference) or Sabathia
3. Sign/trade for a 3rd tier pitcher who is a non-tendered type, needs change of scenery, etc. Think Jason Jennings, but hopefully more successful, or Padilla from a few years ago. These guys may not succeed as often as the AJ Burnetts, Jarrod Washburns, Kevin Millwoods, but are far cheaper when they fail spectacularly.
4. An alternative to trying to “get lucky” with a 4th starter would be to aggressively go after a team’s young pitcher similar to the Matt Garza/Delmon Young trade. We can all dream about those, but there are many names out there who could easily fit into our rotation near the top.
1. Sheets / Sabathia
2. Padilla
3. McCarthy
4. Old project / young trade acquisition
5. Hurley
That rotation won’t win anything by itself, but with this offense will allow us to be competitive.
Bullpen is always a crap shoot – just sign a bunch of guys and hope they are better than this year’s crop.
by JBImaknee on Jul 21, 2008 4:01 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Hmm...
Off the top of my head, the locked in guys for the rotation are probably…
Kevin Millwood
Vicente Padilla
Eric Hurley
Scott Feldman
With the following fighting for the fifth spot, in order of current status…
Brandon McCarthy(he has the right to be first)
Matt Harrison(needs some conditioning)
Kason Gabbard
AJ Murray- Could try, will be a AAA starter waiting for injuries
As far as your comment about no signing big free agents, the Rangers need a front line starter for the future, why not a contract for Sabathia or Sheets, one or the other, and then you could have….
Sheets/Sabathia(Both #1 starters)
Kevin Millwood(A better 2-3 than 1-2)
Vicente Padilla(see Kevin)
Eric Hurley(Future 1-3, developing in his first full season)
Scott Feldman(Would be the best innings eater whose a 5 in MLB)
Keep BMAC in the pen or AAA to get his arm strength and durability up… Unless he is NEEDED, let him prove he is ready and healthy, and then give him a shot when a spot opens up, you cant tell me that wont happen guys get hurt, it kinda happens.
Kason may be a future lefty bullpen option such as Rheiniecker… Not durable as a starter
Now for minors
AAA- The big guys who should be there by mid season…
BMAC- Let him come here and get his arm ready for the long haul while not taking a spot from someone on the MLB team who has been contributing the last two years instead of falling apart.
Tommy Hunter- Could be a mid season call up when injuries are pilling up… let him get ready her first
Neftali Feliz- He will finish the year at AA, get an invite to ST, then hopefully get slotted at AAA where he can get his innings up to MLB level, develop a consistent breaking ball against MLB ready hitters and also be in a position to maybe get a SEPT call up for bullpen duty(ala Joba)
Others could be here, Im not getting into those tho…
AA-
Kasey Kiker- Making the big jump, well see if he tires with the increase in innings
Blake Beaven- By mid season, hel be here…
Mike Main- See Blake
Wilmer Font- He will rebound this fall, then have a good ST, then get slotted here by mid season…
So wow AAA and AA will have dynasty rotations, and the MLB rotation could be solid… I expect a bullpen to look like such…
Closer- CJ(Insert angry yell here if you are ignorant)
Set Up- Eddie
Set Up- Frankie(gets better every outing, next year hel break out)
Set Up- Jamey Wright(not wrong)
Joaquin Benoit- Gets better after he gets healthy this offseason and learns how to life some weights while not playing ball
And an assortment of others…..
Its time...

I knew what you meant
in other news… I don’t think it’s terribly likely that Eddie G. will be back as our set up man. Doesn’t really fit the JD mold now that he’s “retrenched” as a solid reliever.

2009 Rotation
Sheets / Sabathia / Best Available – this team MUST go out and get a true #1 to compete in ‘09. Everyone knows this. Even if it takes dipping into the talent pool, we gotta pull the trigger.
Padilla-he’s signed at a decent price. Like it or not, he’s been worth every penny.
Millwood-Unfortunately, I don’t think there is any getting rid of him. He’s not an ace but, still could be a good back of the rotation guy. I wish we could move him but, I just don’t see it happening.
BMac / Gabbard / Feldman – Damn, I wish that we still had John Danks. But, we don’t. Between these 3, you would think that one of them is ready to contribute in ‘09. I know Feldman has been ok but of the 3, I think that he’s the long shot.
Hurley / Harrison – Maybe both of them. But at least one of the 2 must come through.
Other Possibilities: Mendoza, Jennings (I think that we bring him back for another shot), Kiker, Holland, and Hunter will likely all be given a shot at some point next year.
I look for us to add another arm or 2 via trade (Blalock, Byrd, Catt, Cruz, Arias, a catcher). I could see us making a trades with any of the following: Twins, Reds, Dodgers, Marlins, Giants, Royals, Red Sox, Braves, Cubs, Cards, Yankees, or Mets. I know that I just named nearly half of the league. But all have holes that we could help fill and the majority have a surplus of young arms.
The Rangers are in decent shape at the back end. We have plenty of guys to come in and compete for 3-5. If we could just land a “true ace”, I think that we could compete next year.

Marlins
They are set at every position except catcher, in a pennant race, and have at least 6 intriguing arms
Nolasco
Volstad
Johnson
Miller
Sanchez
Olsen
I would like to see what it wold take to get a guy like Miller at the deadline, if he is not off limits.
Also, giving Jennings another shot might be the worst idea I have ever seen posted on this blog in a non-joking manner. I’m assuming we don’t trade for or sign anybody else and I would still rather have
Kevin, Padilla, Hurley, Harrison, Bmac, Feldman, Hunter, Mendoza, Nippert, or even Kam Loe start before I ever get into a situation that would require me placing Jennings on the mound. Watching him earlier this year truly made me sick, worst moments of the season by far!

besides the big free agent pitchers
we got some other solid options out there. assuming these guys didn’t resign or extend during the season. they were freeagents according to that cot website. not saying this is what they’d agree to, but it would probably be the max i’d like to see the rangers go.
starting pitchers
paul byrd – how about a 1-2 year deal worth 5 per?
jon garland – 3 year for 30?
braden looper – 2 years for 8?
derek lowe – 3 years for 33?
relief pitchers
brendan donnelly – 3 years for 15?
brandon lyon – 5 years for 30?
brian shouse – 2 years for 6?
i’m not good with numbers and salaries.
of course sheets or sabathia would be great.
can’t guess who is gonna be traded.
for now it’s
millwood
padilla
hurley
feldman
mccarthy
can’t count on mccarthy.
or gabbard.

Feldman
Feldman should be in the rotation next year. At #5 he could easily give us 180 innings or more. I think he should stay in the rotation this year and not go to the bullpen. He gets the start tonight why not leave him there? I thought Nolan wasn’t going to let us worry about keeping innings down.
by peachygbc_1 on Jul 21, 2008 6:11 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Feldman isn't a starter though...
...they’re limiting him to 130 innings this year.
is it realistic that they would push him to 180 next year?...
...i don’t think so.

i agree
let feldman stay in the rotation. i think people are way too catuious with pitch counts and innings pitched. the all star game proved it, webb and kazmir both did great in the all-star game and in their starts after

Are you HIGH or on Crack???
In the past three years the Rnagers have traded away CY, Danks and Volquez. Have no doubt that JD has NO F’ing idea about pitching in MLB. While the line-up is solid we sti;; have no #1 and too many questions at #4 and #5 in the rotation. Not to mention the fact that this team ia the wosrt fielding team innMLB, You must be moking some serious drugs dude!
Move Kinsler to CF, Young to 2nd base, let Davis play at 1b and perhaps find a solution for 3B and SS. Then Sign a legit #1, keep Millwood and Padilla. and most of the kids. Then let Hurley, Blac, Gabbard, Harrison, Loe, Feldman. Murray et al. compete for the the remaining two spots. Sign K-Rod to go along with keeping all the relief pitching happy, including CJ. Good luck there!!!
Bottom linr this is the same old Rangers, all offense no defense and pitching idiocy!
Take that to your bank and cash the check.
Peace.

The Rangers do not want to over extend Feldmand past 130 IP yet are starting him again because of necessity. Tell me I am wrong but the Rangers are in the process tonight of ruining another potential solid middle of the rotation pitcher by over extending a young pitcher.

My hope is...
1) Sheets
2) Padilla
3) Hurley
4) McCarthy
5) Hunter
That would be beautiful to see. It’s not a great rotation, but it would be a improvement. It would mean that Millwood was dealt, the Rangers money-whipped Sheets, BMac was healthy, and Hunter continued to fly throughh the system and got a shot. Of course I woun’t be surprised if Padilla and Hurley are the only 2 from that list in the rotation come next year, oh well.

I'm just getting greedy now...
But I’d like to see this:
1) Sheets/Sabathia (I definitely prefer Sheets, and think he’ll come cheaper)
2) Liriano/Hughes/Buchholz
3) Padilla
4) McCarthy
5) Hurley
OK… I know, that’s not gonna happen. But, I don’t think it’s a situation that’s impossible. Sheets can be had – even in Texas – for $18-$19M a year. I might even go a little more if we can limit the contract to 3 years (with club options).
The number 2 is a little trickier:
Liriano would certainly be tough to pry away – but I still feel he’s a special special arm, that, paired with Sheets, could strike a lot of fear into AL teams. You only get the Franchise by giving up a LOT. Blalock helps them now. The Catchers don’t interest the Twins at all so you might have to go Andrus (they could use a SS of the future as Trevor Plouffe has failed to impress in AA and AAA). Those two won’t get it done, so throw Eddie Guardado to help with their 08 run and one more (low level?) arm to put the deal over the top. This arm would be the sticking point for both teams. I’m sure the Twins would want Feliz or Main. But hopefully Kiker, Beavan or Jones could get it done.
Hughes – I don’t think is so hard to get. And I’m not sure he’s near as attractive to the Rangers. But, if we wanted to, I think we could package Salty (especially valuable with Posada’s injury – and as their C of the future), Millwood (to stabilize??? the rotation down the stretch), and Cruz. (And if there’s a way to work Austin Jackson into the mix – I’m interested).
Buchholz – He’s the guy I hold out for if I’m talking with Epstein. I’m sure he’ll wanna push Masterson, Bowden or Bard on JD (all nice arms). But I’m holding out for a front of the rotation guy. Buccholz is another special arm. Give them Bradley to fill in for Papi. Couple that with the Catcher of their choice (hopefully Salty, not TT). And I think we’d still have to sweeten the pot. Probably another arm.
The other guys are predictable. I’m hoping we can part with Millwood. I really like the guy, and I’m not certain he’s done, but I fear having his contract and Padilla’s would prevent us from getting a true ace. Am I nuts???
