BP Goldstein Chat Wrap...Lots of Rangers talk
The entire chat transcript is here, but these are the comments relating to the Rangers.
BrowningNagle (Louisville, KY): What is the ultimate ceiling of Engel Beltre? He is absolutely murdering right handers. Is he along the mold of a Grady Sizemore (less some power)?
Kevin Goldstein: Wow -- long time no see Browning. Beltre's ultimate ceiling is off the charts. I haven't seen a player in the Midwest League who can match him on a pure tools level. That said, he has about 2% of Grady Sizemore's approach, and that has to change -- luckily he's get plenty of time.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Neftali Feliz (Frisco, Texas): Surprised by my domination of the Texas League thus far?
Kevin Goldstein: Nope.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Taylor Teagarden (OKC): No one questions my defensive abilities on the field, but will I hit enough to be a decent offensive catcher in the Bigs?
Kevin Goldstein: OKC? You're in the big leagues, baby! I compared him to kinda a Mickey Tettleton type with defensive chops, and I still like that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
James (Stamford, Texas): Any concern Smoak doesn't sign?
Kevin Goldstein: No. He's just waiting it out like everyone else, and he wants to see what guys like Alonso and Beckham get, because he feels like he's in their neighborhood.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Derek Holland (Bakersfield): Am I for real, or is the Scott Kazmir upside just hype?
Kevin Goldstein: I'm a big Holland believer, but did somebody really compare him to Kazmir? That's just silly talk. Put it this way, Holland just got to High-A (and he's dominated), and he turns 22 in October. At 22, Kazmir was entering his third year in the big leagues. Get excited, but don't get silly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
myshkin (Santa Clara, CA): Who's the best power hitter from the 2008 draft five years from now?
Kevin Goldstein: Hosmer or Smoak.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
fellajsmall (ATL GA): I do not see a reason why someone would want Alonso over Smoak....seems like Smoak is better in every facet except maybe patience.
Kevin Goldstein: I agree with you whole heartedly.
Non-Ranger related:
Josh (outside Providence): Where can we expect Michael Bowden to rate next year in the top 100?
Kevin Goldstein: I haven't thought much about an overall top 100 of later, but my gut tells me in the first quarter of it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Clonod (St. Louis): Would you say that Willie Mays is a good comp for Colby Rasmus.
Kevin Goldstein: Comparing anyone to Willie Mays is ridiculous. Don't do that.

Slightly OT - who's the greatest hitter ever?
I’ve always said Ted Williams, my former roommate said Ty Cobb (and backed it up pretty well). What does everyone else think?
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

depends on what you mean by hitter
if ‘hitting’ is contsrued broadly to encompass any positive offensive output a player has while at the plate then i thin ruth is hard to argue with, but if it is limited literally to the skill of obtaining hits i lean towards cobb. the guy is 5th all time in ABs and has two Ryan Howard seasons worth of strikeouts! he clearly knew what he was doing up there
williams has to be the discussion for either interpretation though.

It's really not close
Bonds was as good as it gets in our generation, but their career lines are further apart than I thought.
Ruth: .342/.474/.690 with a 207 ops+ and a .365 EQA.
Bonds: .298/.444/.607 with a 182 ops+ and a .354 EQA.
Ted Williams: .344/.482/.634 with a 191 ops+ and a .354 EQA.
Ty Cobb: .366/.433/.512 with a 167 ops+ and a .331 EQA
Yah, Ruth is the best ever.

I am so freakin' excited about Beltre.
I’m not sure I’ve ever been this stoked about a Rangers prospect.
I was pretty excited about Ruben Mateo, but I was, like, 14 and all I knew was the FOX guys hyped him a bunch.

I'm not sure I've ever been as stoked about a Rangers prospect as I am about Neftali Feliz.
Outside of Engel Beltre.
I find the work done by position players to be more exciting, and they play every day. I’m not talking about this purely from a logic-based “who will help us the most” approach.

Hilarious that....
after the Gange trade so many on this site were calling for JD’s head. Now so many are in love with Beltre, not even considering the fact that we got Murphy and Gabbard out of it as well.

I do...
I was for the trade but there were plenty of people that wanted to lock him up for a multi-year deal instead of trading him.

There were also....
A lot of people that felt JD just rolled over and gave Gagne to the Red Sox…
I liked everything but Murphy (who I felt was at best a 4th OF type) as his stats in the minors suggested.
boy I was wrong.
I though gabbard could be a middle of the rotation young Kenny Rogers (so far wrong) and Beltre’s ability was off the chart.(so far right)

In the initial trade thread we were all pretty underwhelmed
considering Gagne was well on his way to becoming a type-A FA if he’d kept doing what he was doing here, but the more I read about this mysterious Rookie League OF we got, and the lengths we went to to get him, the more excited I got about the deal.
Muprhy and Gabbard were just the spares, whereas at first they looked like the main course.

It's funny
I was a Beltre guy to begin with (had him on my sim roster, etc), so it seemed pretty obvious that he was the focal point of the deal.
Then Daniels really talked up Gabbard and for a moment last summer, he was pitching well enough to be considered a potential part. Murphy hit very well after coming over and looked great earlier in this season.
But as we stand now, the trade looks pretty close to what it did at first glance last summer. It looks like Gabbard is a fringy, borderline MLB/AAAA pitcher, Murphy is a 4th OF with enough potential to be a 3rd if things work out, and Beltre is a raw teenager with enormous potential. Murphy probably looks a little more valuable than he did when the trade was made, but other than that, pretty much as expected.

No one’s ever said this. Murphy has such a crazed following.
I was coming around on Gabbard, though. Somehow he found ways to be effective this year, and then…

This is from a recent chat
Nik (Dallas): Neftali Feliz reportedly hit 101 twice in his AA debut and was in the high 90’s most of the game. Wheels came off a little in the 5th but still an impressive debut for a 20 year old. It looks like BA will have him in their midseason top 15 with people jumping on the bandwagon by the day. What’s your opinion of him?
SportsNation Keith Law: I confirmed that with someone in Texas. It’s hard to see him not being in the top 20 or so by year-end. My only concern, even back in ST, was that it’s a reliever’s delivery/arm action.
