Astros get Wolf (Padilla's market value altered?)
Per this guy, the Astros got Randy Wolf today for a AAA pitcher named Chad Reineke.
Reineke had pitched better of late and has a K rate up near 1/IP, but he is also 26 years old and has never been considered a serious prospect. He is the sort of flyball/strikeout pitcher who could work out in Petco and get away with pitches that would hurt a lot more in other parks.
So the question is, does this hurt Padilla's value because of the insignificant return, or does it help because there is one less arm on the market. The park effect of Wolf's former home park and Padilla's current home park must be considered, but Padilla's contract and headcase reputation should be considered as well.
Thoughts?

I think that article
from a week or so ago, with quotes from Wade saying that they owed it to the fans to be competitive, was pretty telling and probably explains the mindset. I also think that he had/has zero regard for almost all of the young players in the system when he took over.
But still, yeah, so curious.

"I don’t think fire sales work," general manager Ed Wade said. "I think a lot of that works for cosmetic purposes, but it’s sort of a ‘panic button’ approach that leads you to a course of mediocrity."

Well
He traded 5 players for Tejada and 3 for Valverde. Their system was already depleted even before these trades.
Plaschke: Scioscia, the former Dodgers catcher, is the model manager who has created an atmosphere of winning.
Junior:It's that simple. Mike Scioscia brings a Glade Plug-In labeled "Winning™" into the clubhouse and everyone who breathes it in gains 15 points in average.

First off
He’s kept Towles and Paulino (who has been hurt all year). Those were regarded as the best two prospects in the system when the season ended. But in the Tejada deal he moved Patton and Albers (who wasn’t a prospect any more, technically). They also got Costanzo, but he was obtained by Wade. Juan Gutierrez, who BA ranked 3rd in the system before he was dealt, was moved in the Valverde deal. He also traded Qualls, Scott and Burke in those deals and Lidge to get Bourn and Costanzo.

10 games out of the WC

Actually
fire McClane. I am sure he has given Wade he marching orders similar to what Hicks did with JD.

Typical Astros shenanigans
But this isn’t a bad trade for them. I have always like Randy Wolf, and the cost was next to nothing (which is all the Astros can afford with that farm system).
by clark on Jul 22, 2008 3:28 PM CDT 0 recs
I wouldn’t really think so. Wolf is a lower risk, lower reward guy, as he doesn’t make much and is a FA after the year (and hasn’t pitched as well as Padilla, all things considered).
I do think that we should keep in mind that Padilla probably won’t bring a huge return if he’s dealt, but I doubt this does that much to affect his value. Besides, it’s a viable guy off the market, and you wouldn’t think that too many solid starters will still be out there next week, with four guys already dealt.

Yes
I would think so. Cardenas, though not everyone loves him, was ranked in the 25-30 range in BA’s midseason update, and I don’t think that they would get anyone that highly regarded, especially if they’re looking for pitching. Outman is a nice secondary piece to add to the deal.

Wolf
Wolf has been terrible away from Petco (6.63). This is simply a salary dump, saving the Pads 3+ million for the remainder of the year.
by Randy Richardson on Jul 22, 2008 3:29 PM CDT 0 recs
I doubt this affects Padilla’s value. Padilla has a 4.41 ERA in a hitters park in the AL. Wolf has a 4.74 ERA in the NL in an extreme pitchers park. Also, Wolf has posted a 6.63 ERA away from PETCO and is a FA at the end of the season. Padilla is better and under contract for longer. I would say he is definitely more valuable. I can’t imagine any team giving up a lot for Wolf, anyways.

Are these rose-colored glasses that I'm wearing
or does it seem like Padilla has pitched better than a 94 and 1.41 WHIP?

Astros
Do they seriously think they’re still in some kind of playoff race? Their 12 games back in their division and 7 teams are ahead of them for the wild card. Craziness ….....

Rauch to the DBacks
I sort of wish the Rangers had been in on that one. We have 2B prospects to spare and Rauch has put up some good numbers over the last couple of years.

Boy
I don’t really get what our pal Bowden is doing here. He loves toolsy types, but Rauch is signed for next year at like two million, and Bonifacio has always underwhelmed me. He seems very, very comparable to Vallejo, plus a level.

Oh wow
and Rauch has a 2.9 team option for 2010. Bonifacio better be good or this was awful for the Nats.

I thought
they would get 2 or 3 prospects for him, not all studs, but maybe 1 better than Bonifacio, 1 maybe a little less than Boni, and 1 throw in.

We should have been in on that...
Not so much for this year (it would help) but for next year.
Vallejo or Duran could have gone.

My guess is that
Bowden thinks that Bonifacio is Jose Reyes or something, but yeah, I definitely would have traded either of those guys for Rauch. Even if you aren’t looking to win big in 2009, Rauch is a really nice asset that you could include in your effort to bring in a young quality starter or two. I think he’d be much more valuable in that pursuit than either of those 2B.

At least he should of had a low level arm thrown into the deal. Man, I don’t know which team’s front office is worse, the Nats or Astros.
