What to do with Millwood?
Now before I start I would like to say that I have always somewhat been a Millwood fan. Being a Ranger homer I first thought when we acquired him he would be an ace in our rotation. When I say “ace” I mean not elite ace (probably only 1/3 of the teams in the league have an elite ace) but a number # 1 who gives you a chance every time he takes the mound and if your offensive scores 3 runs you will probably win the game.
Over the last 3 years it has become apparent that this role is not for Millwood, either due to lack of talent or age. But while many this summer have advocated for the Rangers to get rid of him, I believed with the pitching troubles that this organization has had that Millwood should be held on to. My reasoning was move him into the # 3 slot leave Padilla at the # 2 slot, fill # 4 and # 5 with young talent, and acquire a big time free agent. After today’s performance I am somewhat sick of watching him.
I should also state that I realize that almost every off-season we say that the Rangers are going to acquire a big-time free agent pitcher and it never happens.
So I’m looking for fellow Ranger fans opinions on what we should do with Millwood. Please no answers of just “get rid of his sorry *ss” but well thought out answers.

At this point, you can't trade him...
He’s got absolutely no value to anyone else in baseball… No sense in trading a middle-of-the-rotation type that, when healthy, can give you almost 200 innings for a middling prospect without much upside…
Not sure what the answer is at this point, but getting rid of him still isn’t a viable option…

+1
He’s become the Michael Young of the rotation though – overpaid and underperforming for what we’re paying him, but we can’t really do anything but get whatever use out of him we can.

at least MY
produces somewhat. This guy is always either meddling on the DL or going out for 5 innings and giving up a whole lo of runs

+ 1 there is no comparison between him and MY
Milly I have no choice but to nickname you "The Laborer".
Every time I see you on the mound you're laboring through the inning.
You sure as hell don't labor when you hear Dunkin Donuts is closing in

yeah
thats a terrible comparison….
Maybe if Michael were batting .240.
That would be about equal.
Kevin is more like Marlon Byrd, he never produces, especially when we need it most… yet he retains his position.

His value
is making him pitch for somebody else, I would love to pay his whole salary for him to pitch for LAAAA and we get to face him 4 or 5 times a year

Best..... handle..... ever
Plaschke: Scioscia, the former Dodgers catcher, is the model manager who has created an atmosphere of winning.
Junior:It's that simple. Mike Scioscia brings a Glade Plug-In labeled "Winning™" into the clubhouse and everyone who breathes it in gains 15 points in average.

He is our's
Unfortunately, He’s going to be in the rotation for another year @ 12 mill., unless he can throw 180 innings next year. If this happens, you can expect to see him in 2010 as well. If he could only stay health, I think that he could be a valuable trade chip to a contender next year. But, that isn’t likely to happen. What’s sad is that he’s still our second best option behind Padilla.

he is NOT
our second best option next to Padilla. I’d rather roll Feldman or Hurley out there any day of Millwood.

He is....
Feldman has been a nice surprise thus far. But, he’s hit and miss (recent start against the Angels). It’s waaaay to early to say that about Hurley too. Millwood has proven that he deserves to be in a big league rotation. Is he ace materiel? Hell no!! Still a good option at the back end though. Not that Feldman and Hurley aren’t. They just haven’t proven it yet.

DL
no matter what is wrong with him – put him on the DL and have it make about 4 rehab appearances and get his head right with ball
he’s been bad all year – he may not be a bonafide ace, but he’s doesn’t suck this bad.
we really do not need him this year – I think realistically we’re not playing for a playoff spot – so give him some time to get things right and try it all over again.
not sure you have an other options

How?
How do you make Millwood disappear? Do you think the team should cut him and pay his contract? Do you think that there is anyone interested in taking his contract on? If we eat a good chunk of the contract and settle for mid level prospects, then maybe. But, would that make us a better team? I don’t think so.

Wasn't Millwood
More expensive than Burnett? I know Burnett isn’t an ace either but if I’m given the option it’s really a no brainer.

Millwood
I think we could get rid of him in the off season. Hell I’d be happy if we traded him for cash, or a 40th round draft pick.
by cashman on Jul 23, 2008 6:07 PM CDT 0 recs
Millwood
we all know, once the trade deadline passes, he will probably flash some potential and get people’s hopes up going into next year.
of course, with his contract, we can probably pass him through waivers, so July 31st means nothing to him.
