OT
Former Ranger Great Armando Galarraga has a perfect game through 6 vs the Royals.
Jinx! Jinx! Jinx!
That should put an end to that.

Poor KC
First 19 runs, and now this
Plaschke: Scioscia, the former Dodgers catcher, is the model manager who has created an atmosphere of winning.
Junior:It's that simple. Mike Scioscia brings a Glade Plug-In labeled "Winning™" into the clubhouse and everyone who breathes it in gains 15 points in average.

My favorite
thing about Millwood’s outing is that after all the work Wash and the other starters did to make sure the bullpen was fresh, Millwood comes in and wrecks it all again

I wouldn't mind seeing
him again against lefies. His sample size was so small and he was in a slump. Give the Murph a chance to prove he can handle lefties.
by Hull Fan on Jul 23, 2008 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's more a product
of a long period of free swinging to start the year, though
His minor league record indicates that at the very least, he should be able to get a .70-.80 pt difference between BA and OBP. If he does that, and continues to slg in the .460s (and maybe even improve), he’ll be fine as a starter

caught stealing
So if Davis doesn’t get caught stealing then we would have Hamilton coming to bat with 2 outs and 2 men in scoring position right? Outs on the base paths really frustrate me. I’m all for small ball against ace pitchers when hits are hard to come by, but in a game like this? No thank you.

don't understand
I don’t understand Wright’ s role on this team. Is he the 7th inning RP like today or a 9th inning sorta mop up guy like on Monday?
"An effortless 98" - Scott Gardner after Neftali Feliz's first AA pitch
by RangerMad on Jul 23, 2008 3:36 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
That wasn't mop up
We went into the 8th in a save situation which means Eddie then CJ. Then we scored runs to make it a non save situation and it was either madrigal or Wright to come in unless you want to bring in CJ in a nonsave situation which he has struggled in this year. Wrights role is primarily a setup man and he has stuck to that for the most part.

5 run lead
Hence the “sorta mop up” duty. Why not bring in Rupe or Madrigal in that situation? It’s not like Wright needs the work.

My point is when you’ve got FX2 out in the bullpen, who has a 1.29 ERA for his last 14 outings, there’s no point in watching Wright scuffle in the 7th inning if you don’t have to.

No
but at the time we were all questioning why Frankie wasn’t in there instead of CJ.

Frankie has been
the best pitcher in the bullpen lately while CJ has struggled immensely. Righty vs. Righty, I go with FF…Let him get out of the jam and bring in CJ in the 9th.

Who else thinks this pitching staff
is extremely weak-minded. I get the feeling that CJ’s mentality when he got out there was “don’t fuck up”, not “I’m gonna attack and strike out this fucker”. I could be wrong but that’s the feeling I got.

Anytime you come in
in a high-leverage situation and the first pitch is a meatball that is hit over the fence you have to question the mentality of the pitcher.

He is struggling right now
I’m not sure why Wash would put him in that sort of situation when Frankie is sitting there on the bench ready to go.

If he could consistently
pitch with a WHIP of about 1.2 he would be great, but I think his high walks are somewhat of a concern

I like his strikeout rate
I think they feel like his WHIP is a bit too high. Given how he is pitching lately and how bad CJ has been, I’d love to let Frankie try to close.

CJ's confidence is clearly shot right now
so if you’re Wash you try to avoid putting him in high-pressure situations if possible. He could have used Frankie in the 8th and assuming he gets out of it, CJ could be closing out the 9th with a 3 run lead.

CJ gets into enough trouble by himself… bringing him in in the midst of somebody else’s trouble was asking for it.

and im beginning to lose my 2009 outlook with the lack of pitching and some reality checks on a few offensive players.

If MB isn't being shopped
JD isn’t doing his job. I think JD is quietly shopping MB to gauge who is interested and what they are willing to pay. I have been reading that Colorado is wanting Buchholz or Kennedy for Fuentes. That is crazy. If I were JD I would call NY and offer Laird (Posada said he can’t catch the rest of the season) and Guardado for Kennedy.

Assuming there will be bullpen and rotation upgrades in 2009
I think we compete. We have a top 2 offense in baseball. If our pitching was just average we would be a playoff contender but instead we have the worst pitching in baseball. This rotation gets you into the playoffs next year in my opinion:
Sheets
Greinke
Padilla
Hurley
Feldman/B-Mac

3 questions
1) who’d you fool into taking Millwood’s money?
2) what’d you give up for Greinke?
3) how’d you talk Sheets into coming to TBiA?

Okay
1) I sent him to some stupid NL team and offered to pay half of his salary
2) I gave up Salty, Harrison and Kiker.
3) I outbid everyone else by $15 million

i agree...
that rotation (provided it stays somewhat healthy) gets the Rangers to the postseason next year… but I don’t see Hicks overpaying for Sheets AND paying half of Millwood’s contract. That’d get the 09 Salary around 77M without even looking at resigning Bradley or a setup man.

Disagree about Sheets
Texas finished second in the Dice-K bidding and Zito would be a Ranger if it weren’t for the Giants’ crazy offer. We’ve been very competitive when it has come to trying to sign FA pitchers that we covet.

I hope you're right...
We need a lot of things, but nothing we need more than a true front of the rotation ace. Buy that, and trade for a young guy to slot in at 2/3 (with the potential to be a 1) and we’re in business.

Thank god I left with the Rangers up 8 to 5 before the bullpen imploded. That ending just flat out SUCKED.

One question
Also posted elsewhere. Does anyone have a count of games lost in the eighth inning or beyond, when multiple runs were given up, over the last two years?
Either I have a lasting impression, or it’s a lot of losses.

I just didn't get that one...
why BGL in the 8th after Eddie G? Whay not Fx2 against a tough RH hitter in a crucial situation which is when he’s at his best? BGL hasn’t tried a 1+ inning save all year and that is the situation you choose to try it out in. No way to defend that decision. Very bad move.
It’s not all BGL and Wash’s fault though as the Electrician and Eddie G didn’t help out matters much either.
