C-Wun and HUH?: Minors 7/23

Kyle O'Campo struck out 4 in 4 innings of work, allowing 2 runs for the AZL Rangers who beat the AZL Cubs 10-4.

Evan Reed will go for the Blaze at 9:00 and Lizard goes for OKC at 8:00.

Spokane will get under way at 8:30.  Not sure who is pitching that one.

The big guns are out for both Clinton and Frisco.

C-Wun and Clinton are just about to get under way.

Neftali goes at 7:00 for Frisco against Midland.

Edit: Here is the HUH? part.  Feliz was scheduled to start, but Parker is in the box score to start the game.  There is no audio on MILB from either side that I can get to work.  And Shroomer can't make it all better.

Not a bad night for minor league action considering two one of the Rangers top prospects are set to pitch.  I need something to get the taste of today's game out of my mouth.

Thanks to Shroomer as usual for the probables.

a dominant Neftali

would go a long ways in helping get over today’s game. But with the Rangers, when it rains, it usually pours.

C-Wun 1st Inning:

Walk, SB, botched bunt (runner out between 2nd and 3rd), sac bunt (runner to 2nd), groundout to 1st. No runs, 1 runner stranded.

-Beavan sounds wild. Threw one to the backstop and most of his balls were missing high. The announcer attributed his lack of control to the new over the head delivery that he has now gone to.

i kinda like the delivery he had in HS

Josh Hamilton is better than you.

by Longhorn on Jul 23, 2008 6:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Why?

Because of the results? Have you seen him throw as a professional?

by jparks77 on Jul 23, 2008 6:33 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

you keep asking me if I have seen a player play

why?

I liked his delivery in HS because I kinda thought he was rather successful with it. This over the head business seems like they keep on tinkering with his delivery. Don’t see the reason for that…

Josh Hamilton is better than you.

by Longhorn on Jul 23, 2008 6:40 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I was just curious

why you made that statement about liking his HS delivery. You made it seem like you preferred his HS delivery to his current one. If that is the case, I was curious if you had seen his delivery as a professional.

He was successful with his HS delivery because he was facing high schoolers and not professional hitters. His delivery isn’t really that different as a professional. His arm angle is slightly different and he doesn’t have the injury risk recoil that he did in HS.

Pitchers in the lower levels of the minors often have their mechanics altered. A lot of it has to do with keeping their mechanics clean and trying to maximize their arsenal. WIth Beavan, his arm angle was probably changed to help with the downward plane on his two-seamer and with the develop of his change.

by jparks77 on Jul 23, 2008 6:52 PM CDT to parent up   1 recs

Probably

because it would add validaty to your statement. If you only like it because of the result, your observation doesn’t hold much water. If there are particular aspects of his delivery that you saw and you liked and you could explain what you liked about it, that would be worth discussing.

A LOT of HS pitchers get very good results with awful deliveries. Especially, those that run it up there in the mid-90s. They don’t care if he can get hs hitters out, they want him to eventually get big league hitters out.

not

that i liked his high school delivery, but i’m always skepticle of a new delivery that results in significant velocity loss. and this org seems to have an obsession with arm angles.

by SteveP on Jul 23, 2008 7:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't disagree with that.

However, using the fact that he had success in high school as a rationale that he shouldn’t change his mechanics at all in pro ball, isn’t sound at all. That’s usually not sound going from high school to college, much less to low A ball.

We cannot judge Beavan's velo, delivery, etc. start by start

This is a long term project, and he’s going to have occasional roller coaster-like starts. The guys has been pretty damn good considering his delivery is in mid-tinkerment, just give it time and relax.

Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.

new, like since last game new...?

or new this year?

seems that last game and the start of this game are the only time walks or control have been a problem.

by tyd3311 on Jul 23, 2008 6:25 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That's what I was thinking but the radio guy

said it in the context that it was a recent change. He mentioned Beavan had excellent control all season and then walked 4 last game and was wild in the 1st inning of this game and said Adair and the Rangers had him working on a new delivery. Not sure really?

I wonder

if they are trying to get some of his lost velocity back

by tyd3311 on Jul 23, 2008 6:36 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

is the new delivery...

...the reason for the loss in velocity?

by oc on Jul 23, 2008 6:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ahh shit

nothing like overhauling a 19 year old kid’s delivery twice in his first professional season. If they have completely switched his arm slot in the middle of the season, that is ridiculous. Hopefully this radio guy is just misinformed.

Reminds me of JMJ…if you don’t like a hitter’s swing or a pitcher’s delivery, DON’T DRAFT THEM IN THE MID FIRST ROUND.

Warner Madrigal makes Ezequiel Astacio look downright handsome.

by tricer on Jul 23, 2008 6:55 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think he misspoke. He is now saying that Beavan

is starting to get his velocity back with his new (from the beginning of the year) delivery and is having some control issues with his new found velocity.

He has been 91-93 with th FB.

by SaltyDawg on Jul 23, 2008 6:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

So the control issues (in his opinion at least)

are a result of added velocity not another switch in delivery

Kiker will be a first-round reliever.

No way..

Beavan won’t allow himself to be a bust.

by tyd3311 on Jul 23, 2008 6:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He has been dominant..

in his first year as a pro, right out of high school, with a new delivery, not to mention less velocity.

Which will hopefully slowly return.

by tyd3311 on Jul 23, 2008 6:33 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Dominant?

I think that is overstating it a little. He’s done well. However, that K rate and HR rate is far from dominant for a 17th overall pick.

I don’t think there is reason to be concerned yet. I’m willing to drink the “new delivery” kool-aid now, but it also doesn’t get me very fired up for sure.

but I love the fact that he is learning how to pitch, so that if or when the velocity does return, he will just be scary.

Bakersfield Roster

Grant Gerrard has been DL’d and Tim Rodriguez is up from Spokane. Skipping Clinton is in vogue lately.

by Andy Seiler on Jul 23, 2008 6:29 PM CDT   0 recs

Clinton

They are trying to keep the Clinton roster intact (for the most part) for the second half playoff push.

by jparks77 on Jul 23, 2008 6:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Rosters

I just find it interesting that they’re willing to test pitchers like Roark and Tufts in the Cal League in July rather than worry about keeping rosters intact.

was quite impressive, on paper at least.

2-0 Great Lakes after 2 innings

Radio guy still talking about a new delivery like it just happened but then referencing the whole season as evidence of Beavan learning to deal with it and build back velocity. I think he must be talking about the original adjustments Beavan made as opposed to anything new.

Every time he has mentioned fastball speed it was 91 MPH and he has mentioned it a few times.
