Blalock Update
The formidable mlbtraderumors.com has an update saying that the Twins favor Blalock over the other 3B on the market these days. I am not sure how compelled they are to make a move, but that got me pretty pumped, because last year they seemed to have a great system full of pitchers.
Until I read this. Sickels, a huge Twins fan, runs through an update on his initial list, and their system appears barren. Even the great Tyler Robertson, who has Rangers ties because of his dad, has been shut down for the year with shoulder soreness. Besides Ben Revere, that leaves a system that only looks good compared to the Astros.
Unless they are willing to trade someone already on their major league team, I just don’t see much that would make me want to give up a year and a half of Blalock, whose value could really rise over the next three months if he stays healthy.

I think
that the thing with their system is that most of their young guys are on the major league level, outside of maybe Liriano

well, of course its francisco liriano =)
i hadnt looked at their farm system. thats discouraging.
no point in trading him for a low return, may as well just keep him at 3b for one more year.
the preceding post is not nearly as negative or insulting as you think it is

Kevin Mulvey
I forgot that they got him from the Mets in the Liriano deal. He sported a 1.5 G:F in Binghampton last year, but it is down to .8 this year in AAA Rochester, which hurts my opinion of him a bit. Still, he probably projects as a decent back end starter down the road, so he is a piece I forgot they had.

his stock
has dropped quite a bit. his best tool was his age, from what i have read, and his velocity, already a concern, is down this year.

trade
isn’t there any way we could put together a package for Liriano?
They’d at least listen.

no
That’s like asking if there is anyway we would listen to a trade for Josh Hamilton or Ian Kinsler.

umm no its not.
he’s in AAA end of story.
Hamilton is one of the top CFers in baseball this season and kinsler is the top leadoff hitter in baseball, and Liriano is coming off a major elbow reconstruction, has always been a health risk and is AAA.
but otherwise, its just like asking for hambone and IK.

Liriano in AAA is still one of the best pitchers of all of baseball.

he doesnt have more value than Hamilton and he doesnt have the valueof the best leadoff hitter in baseball
this has happened repeatedly where ppl here refuse to accept the idea players with a history of injury who arent in the major league level dont hold the same value as the very best at their position in the game.

major league level
Hes not in the minors because he hasn’t pitched well in AAA. Hes in the minors because the Twins have been one of the hottest teams in baseball of late and don’t see the need to disrupt that chemistry even for someone as good as Liriano.

No, not really
the Twinks are trying to prevent him from becoming a Super 2…hence the grievance being filed against them.

That plays into it
But the fact is he is not in the minors because he isn’t ready for the majors. Hes simply there because the Twins don’t want to bring him up whether it be for chemistry or financial reasons. Not that he isn’t a ML caliber pitcher.

To get Liriano
we would probably have to trade
C. Davis, Andrus, and Borbon.

I am firmly on the Slowey bandwagon
he’s Zack Greinke with less service time
by FirebatM3 on Jul 24, 2008 2:07 PM CDT 0 recs
That's a bold
prediction. His FIP is better than Greinke’s right now, and I like the walk rates. No way they deal him for Blalock, of course, you’d have to kick in something else pretty significant.

Slowey
living up here, he seems really underappreciated. Maybe it’s because he and Scott Baker are the same pitcher. I can’t help but think a deal that includes a RH power bat (Cruz?) and someone like Hank will at least get them to the bargaining table.

Not only that
It might give Cruz an actual shot at a job. Hadn’t thought about Slowey, but it sinks in he might be a really good deal.

And Millwood's FIP
is 4.06…is it really a good metric?

Just one
of many. I’d never look only at one stat to evaluate a pitcher, obviously. I only pointed that out because Greinke’s ERA is lower than Slowey’s, but their FIPs are reversed.
It’s not unreasonable to say that Millwood’s ERA would be better with a more competent defense behind him. And his BABIP is .379 right now. Still, no question, he’s sucking, though perhaps he’s not quite as terrible as his ERA suggests. If he’d just stay in games longer he’d be much more valuable. He’s more of an enigma to me right now than Padilla.

Mike thinks
Millwood slips through waivers in August and is traded.
Are the Mets big fans of FIP? :)
I would so love to be rid of him, and the financial obligation.

Heh
not sure the Mets care about FIP, but if a deal isn’t swung for Padilla this next week it’d be worth a shot. I think someone might take a chance on Padilla or Milly if the Rangers pick up some cash.

He will fall through waviers like a rock….
no way anyone claims him and take the chance of Texas going…ok take him!
Personally i would be rid of him for a A ball pitcher and we throw in some cash

thats petty interesting, man
ive followed the guy this season and i have liked what i saw, but i hadnt heard some1 say that, and i respect your opinion on the game enough for that to mean something.
ill have to watch the guy more closely and see if i see what you see. i love watching good young pitching, its really fun.

why the Twins interest
They have Buscher and Kubel at 3B and DH. Botn are LHB with Blalock like ops.

heard on the radio...
from ESPN sources that Minnesota will trade one of their young pitchers in the majors for the right chips…thus allowing them to bring up Liriano.
We’re not getting Liriano! But it would be nice to get Slowey or Baker.
