Eddie G and Jamey Wright off the market?
Jayson Stark
Rangers
Unbeknownst to most of North America, only two teams in the whole sport -- the Angels and Rays -- have a better record than the Rangers over the last three months (45-34). So GM Jon Daniels says: "I don't see us unloading the farm system to get into the rental market. I don't see us holding any sort of fire sale." But that doesn't mean the Rangers don't have some interesting pieces on their shelves. Step right up and make an offer for Vicente Padilla, Kevin Millwood, Hank Blalock, Marlon Byrd, Frank Catalanotto or Gerald Laird. Daniels would listen to anything that "makes sense." And to make sense, any offer would have to upgrade this team's rotation, at least for the long haul. So why are the Rangers willing to trade Padilla, their leading winner (11-5)? No, not because of dollars. And no, not because he's an astronaut, either. Because he's as talented as any pitcher on the market. So the Rangers are telling other clubs they're willing to deal him if they can get back a young starter they can plug into their rotation by next season, if not immediately. They've had only back-burner interest so far, from a group that's believed to include the Tigers and Yankees. But in one of the least-inspiring rotation markets ever, that could easily change in the next week. Incidentally, two pitchers the Rangers don't intend to deal, despite extensive interest, are relievers Eddie Guardado and Jamey Wright.
____________________________________________________________
Why would we keep either of them? Serviceable? Yes they are. I love Eddie's demeanor but lets face it that arm is held together with chicken wire and duct tape. And the electrician? Not a bad middle reliever but he has come back to earth as of late and he gives me seizures when he comes in the game lately! And honestly does anyone but me remember that people were begging the Rangers to DFA Vinnie this offseason? Props to management for hanging on to him and now he may be at the top of someone's wish list at the trade deadline. Unbelievable. Anyone out there put any eggs in Jayson Stark basket?

Eddie G
some of that has to do with his presence in the clubhouse…regardless, I think that report is false and JD will look to trade Guardado if offered a nice enough return.

Agreed
I think Eddie has been a nice presence and he has far exceeded my expectations. Man was I wrong about him, I thought he was a thin Mike Fetters. But is leadership/chemistry a good enough reason to keep someone around? I am a bit on the fence about it, I wouldn’t be sad if he stayed, unless I find out that they were offered a decent prospect for him and said “no”. Someone who will contribute however minor in 3 years is better than keeping him around… maybe… kind of a crapshoot since he wouldn’t bring a top tier prospect anyway.

clubhouse?
I bet it would be good for the clubhouse if they traded him for someone that could help them win in the future. If they like him so much, they can resign him in the offseason.

Hank
I like this quote
Further down Stark’s page:
• Hammering Hank: Elsewhere on the third-base market, it looks as if activity is finally picking up on Texas’ Hank Blalock, now that he’s actually played five games in a row. The Twins, Giants and Dodgers are all believed to have some level of interest. And Blalock doesn’t have to be a rent-a-player. There’s a $6.2-million club option on him for next year.
But the Rangers want a decent young player - and preferably an arm - back. “This is not a giveaway deal,” said an official of one team that spoke with them. “This is not a Ray Durham situation.”

I love that last quote

Ok so if Jamey Wright is the "electrician"....
if Hank cleans out their farm system would he then be known as the “janitor” or is that Teixiera’s moniker? :oþ

JD is playing his poker hand....
The less you are looking to trade someone the more that they have to give you to let go of them…
might net us an extra prospect or a slight upgrade in a prospect.

i think of this...
...time of year in baseball, like i think of the NFL during the weeks before the draft… don’t believe a word you are hearing… if a team says they are down on someone they aren’t… if a team says they really like someone they don’t… if a team says they don’t wanna move a guy… they just haven’t seen enough return yet to get them to say they do…

Im just glad to see JD working the media
thats the stuff as a fan that reminds me of a savvy old vet, 2 years ago he woulda said, “no1 is untouchable” at this time of year. good to see him developing a good offspeed pitch

Wright and Guardado
This must mean that the Rangers expect either or both of these guys to reach Type B status before free agency this offseason.
by Andy Seiler on Jul 24, 2008 2:27 PM CDT 0 recs
That would make some sense
Not sure what they would have to do to reach type B, but a compensatory pick would more than likely be worth more than whatever you could get for either one in trade.
I could see either one (especially Eddie) as part of a package deal though given the demand for relief arms.

Demand
This is what makes me think that a decent prospect may be possible for Eddie. A lefty, gritty vet is exactly what a contender needs to reach the playoffs, who cares if the groundskeepers pick up his spare parts as he leaves the mound and he can only throw 80 mph. Eddie is Drew Meyer on the mound! When my kid is old enough, I am going to sow his right arm to his body until he can throw lefty.
Just kidding I love Eddie, and I won’t sow my kid’s arm… Super glue is faster.

shhhhhhhhhhh!
dont talk about that. they think its everyday eddie.
that might be our stategy for rebuilding.
1) sign washed up has been super reliever from the past on the cheap
2) duct tape and bailing wire him through 1/2 a season
3) sell him to some big market chump for future Latin American star 12 year old.
4) repeat process.

Nope
You get a supplemental first round pick. The ranking you have to reach has changed, as you now have to be in the top 21 to 40 percent to achieve Type B.

the idea of jamey wright and eddie guardado as future sandwich1st rounders is sexy!!!
of course with our luck they’ll accept stupid arbitration.

arbitration
To get compensation, you have to offer arbitration to the player. Do we really want to do that with these guys?

Probably Not
I think it’s more dangerous with Guardado than with Wright. Wright’s value is slowly climbing as a good reliever, so it’s likely he pursues a more lucrative deal than arbitration on top of his $1M salary this year.

Is wright a FA after this season? Does anyone have a good (mlb/ranger) team salary/contract site, that lists details like Millwoods thresholds for locking in his option yr and other such contract minutia?

All media angling aside
Guardado has been great this year and great for the team apparently, but DEAL HIM if you get a decent offer.
