TROT COFFEY

(* Trade Rumor Offerings To Chew On For Fun, Even Yuks)

[NOTE: This is sort of pointless for LSB'ers, since you already know all of this stuff if you're spending time here, but anyway...]

Not to be confused with Cincinnati-Louisville Shuttle occupant Todd Coffey, the TROT COFFEY is a mailing list-only update (with the exception of this one) on what the media has unearthed as we approach next week’s conventional trade deadline:

• The Yankees have expressed interest in Gerald Laird (Fox Sports, Newark Star-Ledger)
• The Yankees have not expressed interest in Gerald Laird (ESPN)
• The Giants, Twins, and Dodgers are interested in Hank Blalock, but Texas won’t give him away as if he were Ray Durham – we want a legitimate young pitcher (ESPN, Sports Illustrated)
• The Twins also like Casey Blake, but apparently not as much as Blalock (MLB.com)
• The Rangers aren’t shopping Vicente Padilla but realize he’s as talented as any pitcher on the market, and thus will listen to offers as long as they include at least one young starter ready to step in; the Yankees and Tigers have shown mild, preliminary interest (ESPN)
• There’s extensive interest around the league in Eddie Guardado and Jamey Wright but they’re unavailable (ESPN)
• If the Braves and Rangers did discuss Mike Gonzalez for an outfielder, talks went nowhere because Atlanta would only consider such a deal if it were for Josh Hamilton (MLB.com, via Baseball Prospectus)
• Texas is among at least 10 teams expected to send a representative to watch Freddy Garcia audition for work (MLB.com)
• Toronto is quietly checking around to see what it could get for the less-than-happy Roy Halladay (Newark Star-Ledger)
• Halladay isn’t available (ESPN)

If you aren't on the free Newberg Report mailing list (where future TROT COFFEY's will be confined to) and want to be, click the "Mailing List" link on the top menu bar at www.newbergreport.com.

Wow

“Atlanta would only consider such a deal if it were for Josh Hamilton”

Hopefully JD wasn’t drinking a coke when they said this… that stuff hurts when it comes out of your nose.

Made me think of this line

Ted Striker: "Surely you can’t be serious."
Dr. Rumack: "I am serious … and don’t call me Shirley".

suggesting hamilton for gonzalez

is not less silly than gonzalez for byrd

the preceding post is not nearly as negative or insulting as you think it is

IF

That is your first offer… I suppose. Under the premise, ask for the Moon, the other GM maybe taking meds. It sounds like a message board suggestion and sour grapes.

hey braves, bitter at all? I mean, maybe a little. Just a bit.

It's just that

the alternatives don’t make much sense for them. Bradley is great but unsigned past this year. Murphy doesn’t really do much for them that Frenchy doesn’t. No one else is even close to worth Gonzalez. I don’t think that the response is unreasonable, although actually mentioning Hamilton seems pretty pointless and sassy.

Offense doesn't doubt me, but my first and primemost thing is defense and punt return and kickoff return

A lot of contradictions there,

but that’s trade rumors at the deadline I suppose.

Just because....

...I don’t feel like taking the time to post it in several places each time. Lazy.

fun

I miss all those reports at last year’s trade deadline from unnamed MLB executives concern trolling Daniels because his trade demands were too high. That was fun.
