7 trades in 7 days
Well, when I went to sleep it looked like we had a trade in the books. When I woke up, 43% of lonestarball voted no. So that's that. Lets move on.
We have one last AL team before we move on to the NL, and it's the Chi Sox. Let's face it, we aren't a good match because of the hatred between these two teams.
But I'll try another one and guys, these are only trade proposals, so stop being all anal about it and just have fun. Remember, constructive critizism, not hatred.
Breaking news: the Texas Rangers trade Hank Blalock , Eddie Guadardo, and Joaquin Arias for Jack Egbert and Josh Fields from the Chicago white Sox.
At first glance, I like it. Crede has been below average for the Sox and they could use an upgrade at 3rd base. They eventually want to use Fields, but Im afraid they just aren't fond of him anymore and are willing to trade him, or else he would be playing there right now. Arias steps in next year for Cabrera. Their in house replacement, Alexei Ramirez, is no sure thing so I could see them adding another young SS for competition reasons.
We get their third best prospect and a major league ready third baseman. Jack Egbert would be a candidate for a late summer, early fall call up next year. Josh Fields steps into the 3rd baseman role, finally.
Chicago might be willing to do this because they want to stay in first place. They get an extra pen arm, which are being way over valued right now, an upgrade for 1.5 seasons in blalock(if they pick up the option), and they get a future replacement for Cabrera.
Now go on you know the deal vote, and vote wisely.

I have cousins who watched Fields play at OSU and they always came away very impressed at what he did

I dont know who egbert is
so he cant be good. J/k but seriously, did you say he is a 3b prospect? Why would we trade for a young talented third baseman who should be able to hold that role down for a long time and pick up another 3b prospect? Fields and a low level (or any level) pitching prospect would be preferable.
That said I would do that deal for fields alone, however I voted in the category that we would do it, but chicago wouldnt. That would be a steal and I did read a rumor today that said fields is no longer considered untouchable.

Stats for Jack Egbert, the THIRD BEST PROSPECT(not a 3rd basemen prospect)
http://minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=19786
Fields is not considered untouchable and I think ultimately if this is voted in the “I would, but Chi wouldn’t”, then Im gonna counter with a better SS prospect.
Remember, contending teams do desparate things, see the Swisher trade, and that was before they were even truly contenders.

whaaa??
5:36pm: According to Ed Price of the Newark Star-Ledger, talks have progressed on a possible Washburn-Yankees trade. Price says the Ms aren’t sold on Kei Igawa, but the Yankees are willing to discuss Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner.
Kellerman is going to go insane if that trade goes down.
Josh Hamilton is better than you.

i voted...
that Chicago wouldn’t do it. And it’s not even so much the talent being exchanged (though it does seem like this deal has more talent coming in our direction). I don’t see the point for CWS. They’ve got an “all-star” third baseman in Crede. And while he’s certainly no David Wright, Hank’s last few seasons haven’t looked terribly awe-inspiring either. This basically puts two average 3Bs on the same team and robs CWS of their 3B of the future.
I don’t doubt that Blalock has value – to teams who don’t have a decent option at 3B (MIN, LAD, etc) but CWS is not in that boat. I’m sure they’d like to get Eddie for the stretch, I could see them being mildly interested in Arias considering Cabrera’s expiring contract. But 3B is not the position they’re looking to upgrade for the stretch.
If we’re looking to deal with CWS, Padilla might interest them. Heck, maybe they’d even take on Millwood (if we ate some salary). Their top 4 pitchers are awesome, but no one’s staying healthy enough to hold down the 5th spot.
NYTX…this could be a fun exercise, but these deals just don’t seem likely. My encouragement to you is to make sure that A) the deals you “propose” meet the needs of both teams and B) as a Ranger fan, you really have to stop and think before you pull the trigger. The Gagne, Teixeira, and Lofton deals were masterful – and God knows JD needed something like that to keep his job and win the hearts of some Ranger fans. But those deals have Ranger fans (who are ready to sell) looking for the next prey that they can totally rip-off. Most deals just don’t happen that way. And we’ve got to be ready to give quality to get back quality pieces that will, hopefully, help us win in 2009 and 2010.
Just my $.02

very well said
most of these trades have been too ‘blockbustery’ and not very realistic. i know this exercise is all hypothetical but its not very interesting if there isnt some realistic potential for the trades.

Understood,
you guys want them to be more realistic. But under these circumstances, being the trade deadline, I feel that these proposals aren’t over the top. Of course they go in our direction and why shouldn’t they. Were not the buyers here.
But I will take into consideration a little more thought. Maybe not this deadline, but maybe by the winter meetings when I do this again.
Crede sure as hell doesn’t play like an all star. I cant stand the guy. His offense is meh, and his D is probably whats holding his job down.

Trade proposal for L.A.
Blalock, Eddie for Laroche, Meloan, Elbert
Probably too little on our side so throw in Nelson, and ???
by meatbonelefty on Jul 24, 2008 7:07 PM CDT 0 recs
not sure
Cruz could find any playing time in that OF, even as a 4th (behind Jones, Ethier, Kemp, Pierre, and Young). And they don’t need a DH.
Perhaps Arias could be of interest since Furcal, Garciaparra, Kent and Berroa all of contracts up after this year (though Berroa has a reasonable option).
In dreamland, I’d like to deal for Kershaw – but I know how much they value him. I wonder if a package starting with Mike Young, Eddie G and Padilla gets us close?

i dont think we have a chance
unless we offer a young, ML-ready, team controllable position prospect, like kinsler.

No.
Michael Young, Eddie Guardado, and Vincente Padilla do not get you a 20 year old lefty who happens to be the best pitching prospect in baseball.
by LiamP on Jul 24, 2008 7:30 PM CDT 0 recs
i know...
and, in my defense, i did say a package starting with those guys. but truthfully, it’d probably take Andrus and Feliz.
If, and it’s a big if, we’re gonna deal for a future front of the rotation arm (who’s major league ready) it needs to be a team desperate for a catcher (or a catcher of the future). When a deal starts (or includes) Salty, TT, or Laird it’s much easier to swallow then if it’s 3 or 4 other pieces that we really see fitting in the plans in the next couple of years.

Personally i dont like this idea
because I dont think this is a good time to trade Hank. He’s looked solid so far since coming back and I think if he stays healthy and continues to hit we should pick up the option for next year, knowing that if he gets injured or we end up trading him duran will probably be ready as an adequate fill-in.
i also think its debatable whether hank is an upgrade over crede right now. crede still boasts an OPS of nearly .800. Hes struggled this July, but it has also been one of his lowest OPS months career-wise. So he could easily pick it up and finish out the year solidly. He is never going to hit .300 but he has popand will drive in runs from the 6-7 hole in that lineup. Hank is a better pure hitter, but still has lingering injury concerns and may not have quite the power that crede does.
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Jul 24, 2008 7:40 PM CDT 0 recs
see his offense just doesn't do it for me,
Id want Hank over him any day of the week, except for when he is injured. But as always, there is risk when trading for a guy like Hank. It could pay off huge or bust.

starting from a clean slate
id take hank over crede, but i just dont see why Kenny Williams would make this trade for a marginal upgrade at best. And for us, Id rather see Guardado packaged in a deal that will get us young starting pitching. i dont know much about egbert but the stats dont excite me too dramatically for a 25 year old who hasnt hit the bigs yet.

this season hasnt been his best,
but his K:BB is good, along with average against. They could possibly be selling low on him.

I can’t believe more people are saying no to this trade.
Could one of the intellegent prospect gurus care to comment on this?

ok here you go
Its a good deal, great perhaps.
It doesnt help chicago all that much.
Texas would do it.
Chicago wouldnt.
Apparently I dont know who Jack Egbert is thus canceling out any credibility I might have had.

It really doesn't help Chicago, at all
They would have Crede and Blalock?
and the two skinniest middle infielders of all time.

I still think if the Yanks are intrested in OMFT
The Rangers should try to get Ian Kennedy in the deal even if you have to add another player.

Yep
I still like Kennedy, even though he’s the type of guy who will either figure it out or be a bust… but I think he’d be worth the gamble.
