Lefty Loose-y: Minors 7/24

How the hell do you spell Loosey?  Loosie?  Looseiyey?

No big club tonight and lots of chatter in the last two so let's do it again.

Gordon is through 2 innings for OKC with 3 Ks and 1 run allowed.  OKC leads 3-2 with triples from Arias (no surprise) and Shelton????

Super prospect Jared Hyatt has gotten through 7 innings against Midland yielding only 2 runs and sitting 6 down on strikes.  Frisco leads 3-2.

The AZL Rangers defeated the AZL Mariners 8-4.  De Los Santos struck out 5 in 4 innings, giving up 2 runs.

Fabio Castillo has come in to relieve Kirkman (6 IP, 2 runs) and thrown 2 shutout innings with 3 Ks.  Mitch Moreland has gone deep and Clinton leads 4-2 in the 9th.

And the lefties are headed to the hill for Bakersfield and Spokane.

Martin Perez has already struck out two in his one inning of scoreless ball.

Derek "Dutch" Holland is set to go for the Blaze as they are about to get under way.

Shroomer as usual with the probables...

Looseee?

I heard some of the CLN pre-game show

Micucci was interviewed. He sang the praises of Mitch Moreland, commenting that his arm is good enough that if the hitting thing goes south he could try his luck on the mound and might surprise some people. Many clubs wanted to draft Moreland for his arm. The Rangers liked his bat.

He also said that the Rangers arranged for the entire CLN ballclub to attend a game in the Rangers/Sox series during their day off Tuesday. Micucci said the Latin players were especially excited because they didn’t grow up with the chance to see a major league game like the American kids. It was the first time for most of them to see the big leaguers play beyond Spring Training. Good job by the Rangers brass their to get that done for those guys.

by shroomer on Jul 24, 2008 9:13 PM CDT   0 recs

hmmm...

the Rangers draft a guy most others like for his arm, and put him in the field. very curious…

Dutch

Holland hit 95 mph on the gun three times in the first inning.

Damn.

by jparks77 on Jul 24, 2008 9:21 PM CDT   0 recs

Holland

had the same kind of peripherals (k/bb/whip) last year too.

But, why does it just seem like this year is extraordinary?

Well, it does for me atleast. I’m sure others saw this coming…

Josh Hamilton is better than you.

Question

I thought you lived in NYC? If so, how do you make it out to see the minors guys so much? If not, who in the world am I thinking of?

But, I’ve been posting on the Newberg site (different name) for a while, and I had no idea that you traveled around to see the teams….anyway, I was just curious.

It has been noted..

that MPH have been added to his fastball, which make every other pitch that much better.

by tyd3311 on Jul 24, 2008 9:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Is there a radar gun...

on the MiLB tv cast? There is no velocity talk on the radio cast. They are talking about how good his slider has become and his ability to locate it and adjust speeds. What aspect of his pitches/pitching has improved so much besides velocity in your opinion? Slider?

by Goyogringo on Jul 24, 2008 10:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

+1

Josh Hamilton is better than you.

by Longhorn on Jul 24, 2008 10:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Jason Cole

is at the game and has given me a few velo updates.

Dutch: His conditioning has improved. His command has improved. His fastball has serious life to it. His secondary pitches have improved. The Rangers altered the arm angle on his slider and the pitch has really blossomed. Same arm angle as his fastball.

by jparks77 on Jul 24, 2008 10:58 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Seemed like he used his change less and less

as the game wore on. Any word on that pitch particular? It sounds as though his slider is well on its way. If he can get the change working with his heat and that developing slider….WOW!

JC at the game, nice

hopefully he will give us more stuff tomorrow. I was reading someone’s preseason musings and they said that Holland was primarily a CU/FB guy last year, with the slider as his developing pitch. His change-up must be ave to above-ave at least to have put up such good numbers in 07.

by Goyogringo on Jul 24, 2008 11:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

At this time last year i had heard of Holland

but his star has shot off the map since then. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect this type of progression so soon. It looks like he has a good chance of being something special

Font is missing

and Castillo. If you take Hurley away because he’s going to stay in the majors now, I might rank the top 10 this way:
Feliz
Holland
Font
Perez
Main
Beavan
Kiker
Harrison
Hunter
Ramirez

But that order (after Feliz) literally changes every day in my mind.

by laxtonto on Jul 24, 2008 9:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think he runs into the same problem Vallejo and Duran do as well

He is a middle infielder and for a lot of fans it’s hard to get excited for a 2nd Baseman or SS b.c. of Ian Kinsler and Elvis Andrus. It’s not really fair, but it could play into some people’s thoughts.

-Athos

by SaltyDawg on Jul 24, 2008 9:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

tyd sort of added to this in his comment below

with Kinsler and Andrus, every other MIF prospect is viewed as not having a chance to be anything but a utility guy for the Rangers….again, that’s not really fair and I think Duran, Vallejo, and Lemon are all better prospects than they get credit for….and possibly Arias as well though not as much as those three

Judgement

A lot of people seem to have already made the judgement that he is a utility player… i could understand that if he came out of college and was 22 or 23, with a more mature body.. but he is 20, in high A, and has plenty of room to go.

Hmm

Erik Morrison, 3B out of Kansas and 2008 Draftee is the first position player to reach high A from the draft. Morrison was a senior, and he’s old for his class (he’ll be 23 in October), but he’s always been a decent hitter and a decent glovesman. I wonder what’s going on.

Jared Hyatt

A prospect or what? His numbers haven’t been bad considering he’s yo-yo’d all over the system this year due to injury call ups. What’s his story and is he a guy like Ballard that fans should remember in the back of their minds?
