Any Interest? Bronson Arroyo
Some speculation in a few places (ESPN) about the Reds possibly interested in moving Arroyo. His salary is scheduled to more than double the next two years, topping out at $11m in 2010. Seems like a pretty reasonable contract for a guy you could control for the next two years and could give you 200+ innings a year as a 2nd/3rd starter to help stabalize the rotation and save the bullpen. Especially if you trade Padilla and somehow manage to dump Millwood. I wouldn't mind a rotation next year of some combination of: Free Agent Signee or Padillia, Arroyo, McCarthy, Hurley, and filling out the 5th spot btwn: Mendoza, Harrison, Hunter, Gabbard, etc.
I haven't been able to discover what Cincy is really looking for in return on any trades, but I could see Cincy being intererested in some of our position player prospects and maybe an A-ball arm in return. What about a 4A, Duran or Vallejo, and an arm like K. Gomez for Arroyo? Interested in him at all? Different package?

I would be interested....
depending on the package…
However if they are looking for pitching prospects its a no-deal.

Not interested
in giving up anybody of value for a guy with a 5.60 ERA in the NL. As a #4 or #5 starter I am lukewarm, but I wouldn’t give up anything of value for him.

he's been a disaster until about 2 weeks ago.
"I’m sure you’ve seen Kiker before but I’ll just reiterate that the kid is mean on the mound. He is only 5’10’’ but he is an intimidator. He looks like he hates hitters. He has the juice for pressure situations."

WTF is up with him this season?
Home: 1.25 WHIP .254 BAA
Road: 1.92 WHIP .345 BAA
The Home version, I trade for…of course, only positional prospects.

OK, that's strange
The Reds are supposed to play in the mother of all hitters’ parks.

Isn't he one of those guys whose peripherals are a lot better than his ERA and W-L record?
Plus, he’s a Red Sox product so he must be good!
Honestly, though, if we can get him for a couple of organizational filler position players, I’d be down with that.

Pirates
Drafted by the Pirates, and pitched briefly for them from ‘00 to ‘02.

Salary
He would be getting $9.5 million in ‘09 and $11 million in ‘10. That is a lot of money to give up for somebody with a 106 career ERA+. Prior to ‘04, he only pitched in a handful of games each season, so I am not going to put too much emphasis on those years. Since moving to Cincy, he has given up a lot more HRs, which is due to his giving up more HR per fly ball, and more line drives. Things would not change much if he were to come to Texas, and he would have to pitch to a DH again. Sure, he could give you 200+ innings, but he will give up the long ball as well. Is that worth, on average, $10 million a season?

Isn't that comparable to what Padilla makes for his career ERA+ of exactly 100 and Millwood for his career 107?
Seems like if we can get 200 innings of league-average pitching instead of 150 innings of league-average pitching, the bullpen would really appreciate the boost.
At the all-star break, Arroyo had a .340 BABIP while Millwood had a .353 BABIP.

True...
But there has been so much complaining about the performance salaries of Padilla (okay, not so much this season, but certainly last season) and Millwood. Would the casual fan really say to themselves, “Arroyo has pitched as well as Padill/Millwood whom I dislike, but he has thrown an additional 50 innings so it’s all good.”? There has got to be a better way to get league average pitching than paying $10 million.

That is my thinking as well
I’m all for growing an ace from the farm and stockpiling or pitching, but you still need some veteran guys that can give you innings. With our lineup and park, if you can get a guy to throw 200 innings with an under 5 era that can average 6+ innings a start you have a 14-game winner. String enough of those together with a good pen and you have a division contender (see 98, 99). I’m not saying he is the best option, but i’m intrigued if you can get him reasonably cheap.

Cheap (as in prospects)
If you want something cheap, might as well go after Washburn. M’s are desperately seeking salary relief, so you can give a marginal prospect if you are willing to accept his full salary ($10.35). He has got an ERA+ of 108, and is already pitching in the AL. Better yet, he is a free agent after ‘09 so if he sucks you are off the hook, and if he is good you get some draft picks.

FYI Washburn 34 v Arroyo 31
I would lean for the younger guy, especially with equal salaries for next year

If we got Washburn
All of Lookout Landing would probably come over just to go “HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA” at us.
Of course, then we could ask them how Brad Wilkerson worked out for them.

seems like
if we want a guy like that we could just go out there and pay a FA instead of having to give up prospects. arroyo is better than this year’s performance indicates but not dramatically. i just dont see him being the sort of guy you give up prospects and set aside 15-20% of your payroll for.

How about.....
Him and Bailey for one of our catchers and a marginal prospect
