it's intersting about pitching to contact

LaRoche and change for Street?!
A new rumor regarding A’s closer Huston Street seems to surface daily, and Friday’s speculation du jour, courtesy of a scout working Oakland’s game against the visiting Rangers, had the A’s sending Street to the Dodgers for third baseman Andy LaRoche “and change.” LaRoche and Street both participated in pre-game warmups with their respective teams Friday night, though, so if a deal is indeed made, it wouldn’t be announced until late Friday night or at some point over the weekend. LaRoche, a 24-year-old right-handed hitter, is batting .214 with two homers, three RBIs and a .333 on-base percentage in 26 games with Los Angeles this season. Also said to be interested in Street, among others, are the Reds, Rays and Brewers; those same three teams and a handful of others have reportedly kicked the tires on the availability of A’s lefty setup man Alan Embree. —Mychael Urban

If this is true, Colleti is more insane than I thought.

It's a little early to call LaRoche a failure.

His upside is still high enough that he’s worth more to a franchise than Huston Street.

“And change” just makes it more laughable.

but he looks to be one of those guys that you’ll be saying that for the next few years and then realize one day that he isn’t that young, promising prospect anymore but a late 20s mediocre Major Leaguer.

Extra innings will have a new look in what could be baseball’s last Olympic appearance.

Each team’s at-bat in the 11th inning and beyond will begin with runners on first and second bases. Teams may start the 11th at any point in their batting order under format changes announced Friday by the International Baseball Federation and adopted in time for next month’s Beijing Games.

For example, a team that opts to lead off with its No. 3 hitter would begin with its No. 1 batter on second base and its No. 2 hitter on first with no outs.

Looks pretty good for the yanks.

Doesnt seem like the gave up all that much at all.

by thad728 on Jul 25, 2008 11:06 PM CDT up reply actions

From Rotowire

Nady’s value gets a nice boost, as he’ll be driving in runs with more runners on base in a more talented lineup. As for the haul, Tabata has a very high ceiling, but he’s still a little ways away from being ready to contribute at the major league level. Kontos is having a good year at Double-A, with 103 strikeouts in 107.1 innings over 20 starts, so he could emerge as a rotation candidate for Pittsburgh as early as Opening Day 2009 if they decide to promote him aggressively. Ohlendorf could potentially be shifted back into the rotation after being deployed as a reliever by the Yankees, while Coke has put together a nice season at Double-A, although he’s already 26. In any case, the Pirates could very well have three of the four players they’re getting in return on their active roster at some point in 2009.

I’ll get back to you, BP is down.

He’s admittedly very good, but I don’t think he’s any better than what Buccholz or Kershaw are going to be.

per TR per Jamey's e-mail
· At least 20 of 29 clubs have called Texas about one or more of Gerald Laird (including the Yankees and Reds), Jarrod Saltalamacchia (including the Yankees), Taylor Teagarden, and Max Ramirez. Texas wants "quality young pitching" in return. Among the New York arms the Rangers like is 25-year-old righthander Daniel McCutchen, a McKinney native who is 8-9, 3.14 in 20 AA and AAA starts this season.

· Laird finished his rehab assignment tonight, hitless in 12 at-bats. He’ll travel tomorrow and start for Texas on Sunday afternoon.

· The Giants, Twins, and Dodgers, as we’ve heard for a couple days now, have expressed "medium interest" in Hank Blalock.

· Texas might be willing to eat some of Frank Catalanotto’s remaining salary (about $1.4 million this year, $4 million in 2008, and a $2 million buyout for 2010) if the club can get something useful in return for him. The Mets are a possibility, not only on Catalanotto but Marlon Byrd and Nelson Cruz as well.

· Other teams have asked about Cruz – who hit his 35th home run tonight – but none has offered a "serviceable major league pitcher."

· The Rangers aren’t initiating discussions on Milton Bradley, Vicente Padilla, Kevin Millwood, Eddie Guardado, or Jamey Wright, all of whom have drawn inquiries. The Diamondbacks, Rays, Cubs, and Tigers are among Bradley’s suitors.

Josh Hamilton is better than you.

by philkid3 on Jul 26, 2008 12:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Joe Posnanski - Greatest baseball writer in America -

had an awesome blog post about this earlier, talking about how and why Joe Morgan doesn’t trust stats. Long story short, he understood what OBP was before anyone else made it even remotely mainstream. Look at his quotes to the papers back in the day – he’d talk about how important a walk is vs. hitting for power, talk about how 2B and HR aren’t that different with guys on, and talk about how working the count matters.

According to Posnanski, people just never believed him and pointed to the baseball stats at the time (flawed stats like BA) to say how he’s not as good as so and so. I think that’s why he doesn’t believe in stats, because he just isn’t up to date on what the new stats say.
