Duran thumb surgery
So much for getting some much needed ABs. Looks like Duran is out for the year.
The thumb injury German Duran suffered on Wednesday required surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament. The injury, also known as gamekeeper's thumb, is expected to keep Duran out for six to eight weeks, so it's going to be unlikely that he will get back to the big leagues this season. That kind of stinks. No, it really stinks.

I believe that...
coming into this season, several outlets had him in the Top 5 of 2B prospects in the game.

i dont see him
as a stellar prospect. but i loved the way he played when he was up here and he seems like a guy who really deserves a shot in the big leagues. it would be great to see him make the club out of spring training next year.

ABs
He really looked like he needed ABs against more advanced pitching, and the playing time he got for the big club wasn’t enough. It’s too bad he’s going to lose more development time now.

That was my initial thought when I saw this news too.
As good a year as it’s been for breakouts (Davis, Boggs, Hurley, Mayberry, Holland, ext) there’s also been some young guys who have seen their seasons ruined by inconsistent playing time, and injuries – namely Duran and Salty. You can’t win ‘em all I guess…

The great majority of people who have surgery for an unstable gamekeeper’s thumb are better off than if they had not had surgery. The longer one goes between injury and surgery, the less likely things will be great after surgery. The biggest problems people have, with or without surgery, are stiffness and some pain with use. This is true for any significant injury of this joint.

Thumb Injuries
Thumb or hand injuries usually zap hitting strength (in the form of power and BABIP) for up to 12 months after the injury occurred. By opting for surgery, they’re trying to nip it in the bud now and try to limit that strength factor to perhaps 6-8 months from today rather than risking surgery later on and starting the clock then.

I was at the game...
When he did it sliding head first into second. It didn’t look good when it happened, but I was hoping that it was just a sprain. That’s too bad, I would have liked to of seen what kind of #’s he would have put up playing everyday at 2nd in OKC.
