he seems to be doing okay batting 8th
maybe moving him and murphy up 1 spot and byrd down to 8th would be better?
but davis is getting plenty of rbi’s where he’s at. hitting behind murphy ain’t terrible.
i guess blalock/murphy/davis would be a nice 5-6-7 combo.

yep and thats fine
why put added pressure on the kid. Hes obviously thriving in the 8 spot. Leave him there the rest of the season and then next year he can start off in the 6 hole and move up to the 5 hole eventually

why would there be any more pressure in the 5th spot?
you think in the 8th spot he doesnt think the team cares what he does?
murphy had his big run early this year in the 5th spot. davis was doing fine in the 6th/7th spots when he was there.
I dont think it matters where he bats for his production. But it might matter to the team scoring runs.

pressure
He can go up there more often in no pressure sitautions. The pitcher may not focus before the game on the scouting report for the 8th hitter as he does for the 5th hitter. He is still showing a tendancy to go after off speed stuff rather easily. While he is making strides he is still very vulnerable to alot of stuff ML pitchers can throw at him. Being lower in the lineup allows him to work on things more and he will probably get more good pitches to hit which he is doing.

so the argument is that there are fewer people on base for our hottest HR hitter
and thats a good thing because he might see a few easier pitches.
i disagree.

Hes our hottest HR hitter
Because hes in more spots to get good pitches to hit. Have you seen the at bats where all he gets is off speed stuff? Yeah he flails away like hes never swung a bat before. When a pitcher needs to get an out, like the 5th spot in the order most times, they just go to that. Obviously Davis has made adjustments but just because hes on a hot streak doesn’t mean he should automatically be thrown into the heart of the lineup.

More spots...
to get good pitches in the 8 spot? What about the guy hitting behind him? Eventually these pitchers are just going to start to pitch around him to face Salty/Laird or whoever is hitting ninth.
I’d like to see him hitting behind Board Game.

Until he starts walking more
They won’t. This is a perfect spot for him to work on his plate discipline. You get a pitch to hit you hit it otherwise take. In the 5th spot he may feel the pressure to drive in those runs and chase bad pitches. Its working. Why change it?

It is working...
but this kid is so talented that I don’t think hitting 5th or 8th will really effect him that much. I think Byrd hitting in the 5 hole is sapping this team of even more offensive potential.

hell, hamilton to the 7th spot. HR title.

Look
Hes a rookie. At times he has looked like Babe Ruth. And at times he has looked like he should never have been drafted. I don’t think him hitting in the 8 spot is hurting him or the team. While its easy to just say his numbers would easily translate to the 5 spot its not that easy. Pitchers before a game go over the lineup and get scouting reports. I have no evidence but I imagine they focus more on the guys in the heart of the lineup than the ones at the bottom of the lineup.
Also if he is in the 5 spot he will most likely find himself in more run producing situations. While he may have more RBIs because of this in the long run is it best for him? The knock on him when he came up was he didn’t walk enough. If you put him in run producing situations he may press and try and knock in those runs and not try and work the count or what not. In the 8 spot he is able to do that more. Like I said there are times where he flails at off speed pitches and can’t hit a fastball to save his life. But because hes at the bottom of the order and pitchers may not pay as much attention to him he gets more pitches to hit and has.
Im not advocating leaving him there for his entire career. But hes been up a month. Lets not rush him by throwing him to the heart of the order just yet.

It actually might be a good idea
You have Hamilton getting all the RBIs from Kinsler and Young, and then Bradley cleaning up what Hamilton misses. So you can hope one or more of Blalock, Byrd and Murphy can get on base to create some RBI opportunities for the Beasticon.

I'd heard Saturday
Laird will be with the team, but won’t start at catcher in order ot let him recover from the hectic travel schedule a bit… that sounds to me like he would be available as a pinch-hitter or in case Salty gets hurt.

Anthony Reyes for RP Luis Perdomo. Would have liked to get a shot to see if Reyes could fulfill potential.

I’m surprised the Cards didn’t want someone Major League-ready in return for Reyes, even if their potential isn’t too great. They’re only 4 out in the Central and 3 out in the Wild Card.

from the startlegram
The Rangers have decided to put Kevin Millwood on the 15-day disabled list today rather than Sunday. Millwood will clear a spot for Gerald Laird, who was activated today even though he didn’t arrive at the ballpark until just after 11 a.m. Max Ramirez will probably be shipped out Sunday to make room for Eric Hurley.
