Red Sox might trade/release Manny
If the Red Sox decide to put Manny on waivers, should we put a claim on him?

this has Milton Bradley written all over it.
Josh Hamilton is better than you.

This happens every year
I don’t know why, because Manny is still the best player on that team. Whatever.
by JBImaknee on Jul 26, 2008 2:12 PM CDT 0 recs
maybe so
but he’s still one of the best players from the past 15 years.
I just don’t get the Manny Ramirez hate. I’ll accept the occasional lapse in attention in left field for his bat any day.

Forget LF
The flying spaghetti monster created Manny Ramirez to be a DH.
He’d look oh so freaking good as our DH next year…

I would love that
I’m not getting my hopes up. But maybe they do a Milton for Manny deal, and eat 25% of his salary. Nice to dream about at least…

I wouldn't do Milton for Manny
I love Milton, and the team seems to love him too. Plus at this point there bats aren’t all that different. Just seems like a ton of work and risk for what is essentially a lateral move for this year.
But if Manny hits the FA market this winter, I’d be all over that shit with a two year offer.
Kinsler-Face-Hambone-MOB-ManRam-CD is a ridiculous first 6. I tried to do a rough calculation of how many runs that lineup might score, and I came up with 10,000. Although that might be a little low.

Why would we want manny
he’s a free agent after this year.

Free Agency
We’d have to pay out his salary for the year, but losing a Type A free agent is still worth two draft picks. Not to mention he’ll put more people in the seats for a little while.

No way we pay Manny $20 mil
I’ve never thought the Rangers would be players in the Sabathia sweepstakes but more likely the Sheets one. However if we have $20 mil to throw around I’d much rather up our offer to Sabathia by $20 mil instead of getting Ramirez for a few months.

It's all about allocation
I’d rather spend that extra money on getting CC or Sheets. Until we get a legit ace on this rotation we won’t win anything…

there's no reason we should even stop there
if we’re spending the money on pitching, then i don’t understand why we have to stop there….....hicks has shown the ability to spend that type of money, hopefully JD would spend it right

Umm
Because he has a 20 million team option for next year. We wouldn’t have to give up anything if we got him on a waiver claim. And if we let him walk we would get 2 draft picks. I think two months and whatever the prorated portion we would have to pay would be worth it.

Of course it's prorated
You really think a team claiming a player has to go back and pay the guy’s salary for the part of the season he’s already spent playing for someone else?

Sure you do
As long as you offer him arb after you decline the option.
Some contract prohibit you from doing so, but unless it’s specified, you can do it.

This lineup would be fun to watch
I obviously would rather spend 20M on CC or Sheets but how crazy would this lineup be?
Kinsler – 2B – R
Young – SS – R
Hamilton – CF – L
Manny – RF – R
Bradley – DH – S
Blalock – 3B – L
Davis – 1B – L
Salty – C – S
Murphy – LF – L
by Coolbean04 on Jul 26, 2008 2:31 PM CDT 0 recs
That would be crazy...
...in no small part because you have Manny playing RF.
He’s a DH. No point in having both him and Bradley.

$20 Million
We only have to spend the prorated portion (about a third of $20 million), and his options for 2009 and 2010 have no buyouts, so there’s no expense there. Spend the little extra money now, take the extra ticket revenue and the draft picks, and call it a night.

maybe
im way undervaluing him, but his proudction has been declining the last two years. he is still one of the best mashers in the game but considering his lackluster, uninspired defense and anti-team ethic im not sure he fetches that big of a deal. but i strongly doubt manny does anything less than overvalue himself so he probably tries to get a deal. plus i dont think hed want to play in texas.

If that's your plan, why not just take the 5 or 6million you'd have spent on him
and spend it going overslot to buy talented players later on in the draft and on a couple of LA bonus babies instead of spending a ton of dollars to get a couple of draft picks?
Seems like a better bet to me.

I don’t really understand going through all that trouble when we can just spend a ton of money signing Harold Martinez this year and going after more guys dropping because of salary demands in next year’s draft. Or just have an open message to all potential LA signings that the Rangers are going to offer you the most money so don’t sign before the starting date for less money

Didn't the Sox
Pass Manny through waivers a few years back?
by Keynes on Jul 26, 2008 3:08 PM CDT 0 recs
Manny
He’s a 10/5 guy. He can veto a trade. And if the BoSox put him on waivers, and someone claims him, he can block going there.
So it is moot.
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 26, 2008 3:20 PM CDT 0 recs
Unlikely
The Sox would waive him, since either the Rays or Yankees could pick him up, and it’s a tight division race. The only possible, though still unlikely, scenario would be a trade to the NL, since it wouldn’t hurt the Red Sox’s chances in the AL East.

He can still block a move to any of those teams, and if one of those teams claim him, the Sox can always pull him off waivers.
