Minors - 07/26
I figured since we have Main, Hunter, and Pimentel all going tonight we should have one of these.
Hector Nelo got roughed up this morning, giving up 5 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits in 1.1 innings. He did strike out 3 (hooray!).
Main currently has a line of 5ip/4h/2r/1er/2bb/4k. Engel is 1/3 with a double.
Derek Lee gave up 4 runs in the first for Frisco.
Hunter goes at 8, Pimentel/Roark at 9.
There's a 95% chance I won't be updating this main post as more things happen.

Just the type of line we’ve been waiting all year to see from Michael Main.
Yup
Hopefully he’s back to showing that great promise he had last year

a lot?
really?
stretch.
the preceding post is not nearly as negative or insulting as you think it is
i just figured he had more than 1 homerun by now
ive looked at is ops and steals and such lately but didnt notice the HR total.
not that I expected him to have 15 or something, maybe a better word would have been surprising.
the preceding post is not nearly as negative or insulting as you think it is
Well he added his 39th stolen base
And I can understand the surprise
He's still 19, folks
power is a late developing skill, and it’s not the biggest part of his game, anyway.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
i could of sworn he was 32.
I know.
look, i saw that he only had 1 HR today and was surprised. it wasnt meant to be a big “elvis sucks” thing.

just picked your post
to reply to the group above about it, not picking on you. His improvement month to month has really been encouraging, though. Both of those HRs have come in the last two months. His slugging has picked up and his OBP is in the .380s in June-July.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
Wow
Knew he was picking it up, but had no idea he was posting a .380+obp the past two months.
With his speed and defense that’s freaking unbelievable.
I’m so excited.
And, no, I just can’t hide it.

Really?
A grand slam and what?
"Would you mind walking a time or two so I could drive in some runs"? Milton Bradley
i dont think it would be possible without a slam
unless he somehow got up 3 times.
but yeah, 3 run homer and grand slam.

they just featured his pic on the MiLB homepage
he has more tats than hambone
What is up with that?

I don’t have any tatoos but I can see getting 1 or 2 that have some meaning or maybe just for fun. But can someone explain the fascination with getting so many?

This is surprising as well
Nelson Cruz has 22 SB.. I didn’t expect to see that.
Does anyone really think he’s a legitimate 30/30 guy in the majors?
in a career year, sure.

But agreed
He may prove ready before the timetable tells us so
Elvis
If he was the starter next year, I wouldn’t be surprised at all.
Out of spring training, I mean.
Evidently the D is Major League-ready. That’s huge…I mean the bat’s done nothing but improve, but the kid can field already.
Seems Hunter would be happy to spray a few groundballs his way too…

OT: baseball tonight
is it really that hard to fit a minute and a half of rangers-a’s into a hour broadcast?
i know they have the video, they showed hammy’s homerun in touch ‘em all. Davis gets snubbed yet again. Well, the last 3 times ive tried to catch him in it… didnt watch yesterday.

Mayberry and Cruz have both been plumked tonight
does the other shoe drop soon? Hunter plunks a Sky Sox.. he rushes the mound… and OUCH.. can’t wait to see that video
Hunter
Met Tommy Hunter the other day. Really nice guy BTW. But he is a beast of man and his hand shake could possibly swallow up many small children.
Someday I will become a RangerMAN!
I always wanted to see someone charge German earlier this year
maybe with Botts on 1b.
That would’ve been fun.

Mr. Hunter is not a fan of the Texas heat
on his off days. It doesn’t seem to affect his performance on the mound at all.

It's not exactly much cooler
in Alabama in the summer. It can be just as humid and sometimes more so there than here.
Is Matt West the next
(RH) Jon Whittleman? HS shortstop without a position, projected to play third base, gap power only, reputedly good hands, too many errors, might end being a left-fielder. Anyone seen West play? I know its too early and I’m sure he’s just now getting used to playing without the gonad juice.
Was anyone listening to the Frisco broadcast when jones was pitching?
Can you give a report on what they were saying about his stuff?
Wow
Braves have a 9 run inning and lose…
Wonder how ole Tex is feeling about the Braves organization now…
it’s deja vu all over again for him.
Okay, i want to see Hunter up here soon.
DL Milly, put him on the 60 or something…i’m tired of seeing him pitch. Let him start getting in shape for next year.
Josh Hamilton is better than you.
No
You don’t want to tie up a 40 man roster spot all offseason on Hunter when you don’t have to. Same reason you didn’t call up Eric Hurley last September.

plus
Hes already got 144 innings, wont they start protecting him a bit?
the preceding post is not nearly as negative or insulting as you think it is
This might sound strange...
but those have been a pretty easy 144 innings. He’s a guy who’s going to go out there and throw as many innings as he can before eating up his pitch limit. His pitch counts aren’t much higher than other guys (Schlact, Ballard, Harrison, etc.) but since he gets deeper into games, his pitches have been more spread out.
All of that said, I still wouldn’t be shocked if they tone him down a bit the rest of the year.
by NoNameOnCard on Jul 27, 2008 3:00 AM CDT up reply actions
agree
Having seen him pitch his quick work and efficiency was one of the most pleasant things about the outing. With his strong build he looks like a future 220 inning horse for years to come…but not this year.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
Mets have ran out of pitchers and position players
it’s in the 12th
Josh Hamilton is better than you.
Ryan Franklin
Blew another save, killing my fantasy team..
but on the real, the Cards should no doubt be in the market for relief pitching after consecutive bad outings by Franklin.. Wouldn’t be suprised to see Huston Street end up there.
I just finished my Lemon vs Vallejo piece
I’ll post it tomorrow. You actually made me think about things with Lemon a little more than I had. Thanks for that.

Outstanding piece
on both players. Do you think there is a possibility that either player is moved to the OF?
by booyahcaveman on Jul 27, 2008 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions
Thanks
Both players are very athletic so I wouldn’t be surprised they could handle that assignment defensively. However, I’m not sure they would represent good offensive value in the OF.
FYI

Math Alert
In your batting average discussion… are your percentages based on balls in play or on plate appearances?
by NoNameOnCard on Jul 27, 2008 1:50 PM CDT up reply actions
I ask because...
You’ve got Lemon’s ball-in-the-air rate at 39.6%... and Vallejo’s ball-on-the-ground rate at 58.7%, which seems to suggest that his ball-in-the-air rate is higher than Lemon’s at 41.3%.
Please drop some knowledge on me when you’ve full recovered from your bachelor party.

Cruz teeing off: While they’ve had more and more conversation about the idea, the Rangers still aren’t ready to call Nelson Cruz to the big leagues despite an unbelievable stretch.
Cruz, who has spent the entire season at Triple-A Oklahoma, entered Saturday’s game with nine homers and 13 RBIs in his last eight games. He was hitting .382 (13-for-34) in the stretch. He began Saturday tied with Albuquerque’s Dallas McPherson for the minor league lead in homers with 35.
“He’s the best hitter I’ve ever seen at Triple-A,” said Laird, who spent the previous four days at Oklahoma on a rehab assignment. “He’s the Babe Ruth of the Pacific Coast League. He’s loose, having fun and having great at-bats. I saw a different guy down there than I’d seen up here.”
General manager Jon Daniels said Cruz, 28, deserves another chance and “will likely get one when we have an opening.”

I don’t think he has to worry about staying in Arlington. He has cemented himself at 1B for a long time after his play this first month.
