Goose Gossage, crotchety old man

Goose Gossage says, in his day, you hated the players on the other team!

That's the way it was, and you liked it!

On the day before his induction into baseball's Hall of Fame, the 57-year-old Gossage criticized modern players for allowing their personal relationships to affect the competition on the field. He said there is too much "hugging and loving around the [batting] cage.''

It wasn't that way in his day.

"[Former White Sox manager] Chuck Tanner would grab you, slam you up against a locker and say, 'What are you doing talking to those guys?'." Gossage said. "'They aren't your friends. They're trying to take food off your table.' There was no fraternizing.''

Who besides his teammates are

Padz buddies? I like that in my players. There are not to many Yankee players that like Red Sox players and it makes for a better game.

Yup

Watch before a Sox-Yanks game and you’ll see Ortiz hanging out with the pinstripes and Jeter wandering in to the visiting batting practice.

Are you sure

It isn’t because today’s players have blogs and forums to take out their rants on? :-)

What a load of crap.............

In yesterday’s Dallas Morning News, there was a picture of Dick Williams yucking it up around the batting cage with Roger Maris. And this was before a game in the 1967 World Series, in which Williams managed Boston and Maris played for STL.

This “good ol’ days” syndrome gets tiresome. I’m not sure if these guys are bitter that they played in the era before big-money free agency, or if they want us all to believe they played baseball “the right way”, or what. But it is tiresome.
