Red Sox and Manny
I don't know if any of you have been following the ongoing saga between Manny and the Red Sox. Basically, to borrow the phrase, it has just been Manny being Manny, but this time it seems like both sides are ready to move on.
I don't know about the rest of you but my opinion is that the Red Sox would really be hurt if they lose Manny. My opinion has always been that Manny is the one who makes that lineup go and without him I think they lose a lot. I don't think I would fear Papi near as much if Manny is not protecting him in the lineup. Hopefully this will happen since I loathe the Red Sox but it's interesting to watch. The Red Sox are vulnerable this year with Papi hurt, Manny unhappy, and a crappy bullpen outside of Papelbon.
Now, I'm not saying that we trade for Manny. We could probably get him in the offseason. But this guy is a Hall of Fame hitter. Yes, he is not having a great year but the guy is one of the best hitters of this generation.

I think we are gong to resign
MB and get either CC or Sheets. Don’t think there will be any more free money to get Manny here also. And if I had to choose between Manny and CC/Sheets, I’ll take the ace any day of the week.

I love Manny and would love him here
But I don’t think Hicks is going to pony up that kind of cash for another attendance drive ala Sosa.
by chief on Jul 27, 2008 8:18 PM CDT 0 recs
I don't disagree
that he prob won’t be coming here, but the Sosa comparison isn’t accurate IMO. That was a struggling team trying to fill a roster. Manny in 2009 is not Sammy in 2007, way more production. Manny would be a piece added to a budding team trying to make a run at the postseason.
If there were no rewards to reap,
no loving embrace to see me through this tedious path I've chosen here,
I certainly would've walked away by now... Be patient

If many wants to come here,
then the money shouldn’t be an issue. Some players probably loathe to play on an offensive team like ours.

I don't see why we need...
...an expensive DH in his late 30s.

Same reason we don't get any good hitter because of something that scares us off.
Still not sure exactly what it is, but man it’s annoying when they put up amazing numbers the next year after we pass on them.

Meh
I’ll pass on him anyway, even if he puts up good numbers somewhere else.

Why spend money
on hitting instead of pitching? It really doesn’t make sense to me because it isn’t like there isn’t quality pitching out there (CC, Sheets).

I would absolute hate it if the Rangers signed Manny.
We don’t need him and we shouldn’t want him.

I wanted Manny
and Jon Lester in the AROD trade four years ago. Damn the players union!

I didn't post this
in order for us to debate whether or not we should get Manny. He would look nice in our lineup but we can do without just fine. I posted, instead, to see what LSB’s opinion is on what is going on currently with Manny and the Red Sox and whether or not the Red Sox can thrive without him.

Agree man.
I don’t care one way or the other right now whether or not we go after him. But everyone else seems to think that that’s all we should care about.
I think something is a little amiss there as well, because Manny in that interview seemed genuinely interested in playing baseball. Not being Manny, but just playing baseball for the good of his career and for the good of the Sox. That kinda showed me something about Manny, because he’s never really come out and said anything like that before. Kinda like when T.O. broke down after the loss in the playoffs a few months ago – no one expected it. But it made me gain a lot more respect for T.O., and I gained some more for Manny today.

Well
my opinion is based solely on how it effects the Rangers, so I can only discuss whether or not the Rangers should get Manny.

I think,
that the Red Sox will dread the day that they lose Manny. I also think that Manny would probably ruin most other teams (especially the Rangers)..

Manny not happy and wants to be dealt. We have heard all this before. I’ll believe it when it happens.

Red Sox
God, I hate that organization and their fans. It’s cute “Manny being Manny” when the Red Sox are in first and winning world series, but they want to trade/release him when they’re scuffling a little. Gotta take the bad with the good.
The Red Sox would be foolish not to exercise his ‘09 option.

Can you imagine a lineup consisting of
Kinsler, Hamilton, Bradley, Davis and Manny in our ballpark? That would be a nightmare for opposing pitchers. Not to mention Maximus, Blalock and the FOTF.

Get Manny
great idea about 4 years ago, not so much now.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
by t ball on Jul 28, 2008 4:12 AM CDT 0 recs
obviously
if the price is right the Rangers need a right handed outfield bat. As for what to send their way, I don’t really have a great idea. Marlon Byrd’s and Nelson Cruz would benefit from hitting in Fenway. Or a guy like Brandon Boggs who can bounce them off the Monstah when hitting from the right side and find gaps in Fenway’s huge center and right fields when batting from the left. Of course the Red Sox are going to want some sort of pitching as well. We have a lot of good young relief arms and some high ceiling prospects to include. If they are desperate to move him and his contract then I think the rangers could put something together without trading away the future.
