2 trades in 1 day- part 1
So the Mets trade got shot down, which is nice. I really dont want Davis to get traded, he is a beast in the making.
The second trade is official. The Rangers trade Gerald"OMFT"Laird to the Cincinnati Reds for Homer"Duh" Bailey.
On to todays trade.
Breaking News: the Texas Rangers Trade RF Milton Bradley and German Duran to the Arizona Diamondbacks for minor leaguers Jarrod Parker and Brooks Brown.
Duran could be a possible stop gap at second if they let Hudson go after this year, but who knows, Duran could take advantage of playing everyday. He should hit for average, right? Bradley is the big RF bat they lack right now. They have the pitching to go deep into the playoffs, but do they have the offense?
At first glance, you might say why they hell would they trade their #1 prospect and another top 10 for a half a season of Bradley and a possible utilty infielder? Bradley is getting the 'Backs two picks if he leaves and with an already stacked system their GM isn't afraid to make a deal for an impact bat.
Would you do it?

Duran is injured right now
He’s not going to be included in any deals while he injured.

And also
I don’t think Bradley is going to be traded to an NL team.
But in principle… that sounds like an OK deal just looking at it offhand. I need to do a little research on who Brooks Brown is though.

Is this all we can get for MB?
No. I don’t want another A ball pitcher if we are trading away MB. Parker looks like a good pitcher but I think we have now moved into the position the As are in where we can trade for ML ready players now.

Parker
is a guy you make an exception for. He belongs in the discussion of second tier pitching prospects in all of baseball and thats only because he has pitched well but not great this year. This is the first hs pitcher taken in the beavan/main/porcello draft and there was good reason for that. He is legit and is a no doubt top 100 prospect in all of baseball. You take those any time you can get them.
I actually see this trade as a possibility albeit an improbable one, if you can even trade duran right now. Im not sure if the dbacks take that big of a risk, but in an imminently winnable division they would be getting one of the best hitters in baseball this year, draft picks if they let him go, and a (at this time last year he was anyways) top 2nd prospect to replace hudson who will probably leave next season giving them more draft picks in essence by allowing him to leave with a viable replacement handy.
I dont know who brooks brown is, and will do some research perhaps a bit later, but off hand it seems like not only is this a fair deal, but one slightly tilted in arizona’s favor. This gives them an immediate boost now and the ability for 4 premium draft picks and a ml ready 2nd baseman for 2 prospects. I would like to see an extra one thrown our way, a typical JD type low ball arm tacked onto the end of this deal, but would do it as is.

Young pitching
Look I am all for loading up on young pitching prospects. However this move would be more than just Bradley for Parker. The trickle down effects would hold this team back. Heres what I mean. Take Bradley out of this lineup and where is it? It automatically becomes more left handed dominant and as we’ve seen that is a problem. And don’t give me this “bring up Nelson Cruz because of what hes done in the minors” crap. Hes done it before and there is no reason to think he won’t come up to the bigs and continue to suck at this level. Plus who do you put in the 4 hole to protect Hammy? Byrd, Murphy, Davis, Hank? Thats three lefties which you would want to have a righty to break them up. So Byrd or Cruz. Wow that certainly scares alot of pitchers. So the trickle down of giving away Bradley is most likely our offense will see a drop in production.
Thats fine if we get a pitcher who can come in and help the pitching staff also reduce amount of runs given up. Parker could do that but not for another 2 years at the very earliest. Most likely 3-4 years away. Thats too far away for me to trade away arguably the most complete hitter on the market right now. The last 18 months have seen an incredible influx of talent into the lower levels of our minor league system. That was important because without that base you can’t build off it. Now we have that base in place its time to start adding more to the walls so to speak. The lowest level prospect i would take for Bradley is an arm that is in AA and can conceivably help this club out no later than Opening Day 2009. Trading for Parker would only go toward the continued perception that we are always “gearing up for two years down the road” that so many fans have right now. Its now time to start trading for ML ready talent. We have the base of good young core players. Its time to compete. And that time starts next year. Not in 3 or 4 years.

agreed
very good points, if we want to compete in 09 and 10 we cant trade chips like Bradley/Padilla/Blalock and even one of our catchers without getting something that helps us out in those years, most obviously pitching.

i hear what you are saying
but my point is when you have a chance to add someone that is special, especially a pitcher, you do it. So what if you have to wait an extra year? Parker has a chance to be an ace or maybe at worst a #2 if he hits his ceiling and so far he has done nothing to indicate his is off track. IMO you take that every time you can get it and be grateful, cause those type of pitchers dont grow on trees.

I agree
The only thing is like I said if we did that all it would do is support the theory many fans and media have that we are always “reloading for two years from now”. With the way the young guys have played this year I don’t think you could sell that to your fanbase no matter how good Parker is.

I don't think...
you do that deal. Board Game should be worth more than that. If you get guys that are that young and that far away, then I think you chance it and try and re-sign him or take the draft picks if he leaves.
