Trade Rumors 7/29
Didnt have anywhere to post a random bit of info.. so I figured we could collect the minor trade rumors of the day in a thread. Barring anything big happening of course.
To start the day off, The South-Florida Sun Sentinnel confirms the Marlins are looking to acquire a catcher, and lists Laird as one of four targets.
They are also looking for a left handed reliever, with guardado in the mix there as well.
Anyone have a realistic return in mind? I'm not particularly familiar with their system.

The players I like from FLA
are Tucker, Gaby Hernandez, and Matt Dominguez. I wonder if it’s possible to get all 3 somehow.
Volstad is another good option but he’s FLA’s #1 prospect in the majors right now, it would take an arm and a leg to get him.

No chance
But I’d love to have either or both of Tucker and Dominguez somehow.

Vanden Hurk
Not on BP’s Top 11 in Jan. but took Miller’s spot in the rotation when he got hurt—with not real good results. 23 years old.

I like Vanden Hurk
He’s got the stuff. Not really sure where he sits in their pecking order, but I suspect that he’s behind the 2005 picks (whether or not he should be, I’m not sure).

If he's behind the 2005s
then it seems he would be a possibility, especially if a low level arm was included with Laird.

I did some research...
and came to the conclusion that noone named Rick VandenHurk could ever be successful in the major leagues.
Seriously though, if we could get a package with Tucker I’d go for that.

Add Brewers in mix
The Marlins are the most aggressive suitor for Gerald Laird. The Brewers, Reds, and Yankees are also in on the Rangers’ catcher. Rosenthal points out a Doug Melvin connection – Melvin acquired Laird as the Rangers’ GM back in ‘02. The Rangers continue to target young starting pitching in return.

re:
The Marlins are the most aggressive suitor for Rangers catcher Gerald Laird, but add the Brewers to the list of interested clubs, which also includes the Reds and Yankees.Brewers GM Doug Melvin acquired Laird for the Rangers in 2002, and Laird would be a strong complement to Jason Kendall, who needs to start only 16 more games to guarantee his vesting option for next season.
The Rangers are seeking a young starting pitcher in return for Laird, and also fielding calls on their other catcher, Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
The Marlins, according to the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, are considering three catchers besides Laird: The Giants’ Bengie Molina, Orioles’ Ramon Hernandez and Pirates’ Ryan Doumit.
Matt Treanor, the Marlins’ starting catcher, is suffering from a sports hernia.

Well you would want having two of Max and Teag
is waisting there talents. You can give Max 75% of the starts and bring in a career backup catch for the other 25%.
Now I’m not saying my proposals would work out but would you rather be bringing in guys like Bailey, Hughes, Tucker/Hernandez/Dominguez or keeping two catchers on the roster while one not getting significant time.

Salty for Bailey – Is a stupid lopsided trade?
Laird and Guardado for FLA’s prospects a lopsided trade?
The ONLY one that might deem impossible is Teag, Padilla, Francisco, and another player for Hughes. Which is NOT a horrible offer.

Well
My frustration is not directly completed at you and I apologize for posting it in a response to your comments.
I have a real hard time believing that teams are going to give up potential aces for anything. Bailey and Hughes fit that mold, so I do think there is a certain amount of fairytale. Although not as farfetched as the Buchholtz and Kershaw BS that continues to pop up, which is what really aggrevates me.
So, yes, I would be blown away if the Rangers landed either Bailey or Hughes, but probably should have directed the frustration at the next person who suggested a Laird/Blalock for Kershaw deal. Please accept my apologies.

Bailey
While I agree he has top of the rotation potential I think Cincy is extremely low on him right now and his performance in the majors has not lived up to the hype while Cueto and Volquez have. He is getable and it may take Salty although I still think if they truly covet Laird then a one for one swap is the only way they get him.

- 15 ML starts = 1.72 WHIP, 76 ERA+

Look I think Cincy rushed him and he will still be a good pitcher in this league. He may still reach his top of the rotation potential. But I also think Cincy has soured on him. There have been reports of his attitude issues whether or not those are true or not I don’t know. But his performance at the ML level so far has not lived up to the hype behind him. And seeing as how next year is his last option year they may be looking to unload him and cut bait so to speak. If so im all for going after him. He is just the type of player we need to be targeting in trades. Young ML ready pitchers. Like I said if they truly covet Laird like has been reported then Laird straight up is the price

Saltalamacchia for Bailey
The weird thing is, I’d be glad to do that if I was a Reds fan.
As a Rangers fan, I don’t know.
Salty’s going to have a nice career, and I bet a fresh start is exactly what he needs to begin that career. Reading into the stats, this player has simply not been able to handle ambiguity in his catching role.

I think Max/Teagarden are the most obvious pairing of
our 4 guys.
Teagarden as the good defensive starter, Max can be used as a part time DH and pinch hitter while catching 1-2 times a week.
And with teagarden’s injury history it would be nice to have a capable backup.

You deal both Laird and Salty now…and let Tea start with MaxRam as the backup/DH, then you can look to someone else to be the permanent back-up to Tea.

I would deal one right now, and then wait until at least the offseason before looking at dealing another
Since Max doesn’t look like a regular starter behind the plate, if you get rid of two catchers right now, you will be left with only one. What if that one doesn’t pan out?

while that approach is probably the right one
There are bigger problems then worrying about another catcher if we keep max and one of tea/laird/salty don’t work out.
Like having no pitching. Ill be surprised if a deal involving a catcher can get us one legit and close to the majors pitching prospect, but if somehow we find 2 such deals for young pitching… i could deal with iffy depth at catcher.

you want a AAA/MLB SP over a A/AA. I’ll take a AA guy though if he has really good stuff. Worst case you get a AA arm and it makes it easier to try to form a package for a guy like Greinke in the offseason.

Hindman
has some good stuff in his trade market tracker today
http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/07/trade-market-tracker-729.html
He hits on something I was mentioning above, the idea of packaging players to bring back a greater quality player. He argues that only with Ron Mahay in the Tex package could the Rangers have gotten Neftali Feliz.
Some targets he considers:
Florida = Josh Johnson or Andrew Miller
– I don’t think Florida wants to give up one of those two guys
Boston = he argues that Theo won’t want to wait until the offseason because Laird is the best catcher on the market now or in the offseason. He suggests Laird for Bowden (I’d be on board with that).
Milwaukee = he somewhat jokingly throws out a Laird for Yovani Gallardo move. If that happens I am going to give JD a big kiss.

might be a stupid question
But for arguement sake, we get rid of Salty and Laird (which I dont condone, but with a good return could get on board with) and we are left with Max/Taylor combo.. What would we do now that Taylor is in Beijing for the Olympics? Would that impede trading both, or could it still be done and have him on a plane back?

Thats one of the reasons...
I don’t see salty going anywhere until the off-season. They let TT go to the olympics knowing they would not trade Salty unless blown away.
I think Daniels would like to see Salty finish the year as the starting catcher, and see what happens. If he dosen’t show signs of being our future #1 catcher, he will probably be packaged in a deal this offseason.

Young
From Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger:
The Dodgers continue to look everywhere for a shortstop, and tons of names have come up in connection with their search. They don’t seem likely to land the Pirates’ Jack Wilson, but they’re scouring other organizations for options, having touched base with Toronto about John McDonald, the Yankees about Alberto Gonzales, the Twins about Adam Everett and even the Rangers about Michael Young, though it’s unclear whether or why Young would be available.
Young is new to the discussion. The 31 year-old shortstop is hitting .298/.345/.421 in 469 plate appearances this year. His five-year, $80MM extension was signed in March of ‘07 but doesn’t kick in until next year. Even if the Rangers would listen on Young, could the Dodgers take on such a contract?
Wow, or is this just LA fishing.
