Teixeira apparently traded to Angels

The Ticket is reporting the deal now. I'll update with a documented source when it's confirmed.

The deal appears to involve Casey Kotchman and Stephen Marek. Kotchman is having a down year, but I'm pretty happy that one of the potentially good long term bats is out of Anaheim. Marek was ranked by Baseball America as LA's #6 prospect in the spring, though he's moved to the bullpen this season in AA, to mediocre results.

UPDATE: ESPN's updated story on the deal

Wow,

I think we did much better for Tex. Of course, we could offer him at 1.5 yrs rather than half a year (actually around 50-60 games). But there may be a good chance he signs with the Angels.

We did substantially better

I think the deal on the table from the Angels last year was Kotchman + Saunders/Santana + a kid or two. Basically, they don’t get the pitcher in the deal.

I agree with Z though – I’d rather see Tex in Anaheim for two months than Kotchman there long-term.

no way

the Angels have very little chance of re-signing him.

We did MUCH better.

Not even close.

As I said in the other thread, for a team that’s out of contention I don’t think three years of Kotchman is a bad exchange for two months of Teixeira, but I can’t beleive they couldn’t get more.

The grade on this deal depends solely on whether or not Teixeira resigns.

If he resigns, it’s a pretty good deal for the Halos.

If he walks after this season, this is a terrible deal for LAA.

I do think he's a talented writer.

But there’s a different between a guy who is good at telling baseball stories and offering baseball analysis. Or a guy who can tell you what it was like when he played the game and what goes on in the inside and a guy who can discuss baseball strategy and economics.

The biggest problem with ESPN is they force a guy to be all things. They have Kruk, a guy who can give wonderful insight on what it is to be a player, discuss front office matters and offer baseball analysis. They have Buster Olney, a quality reporter and good writer try and give an analysis of the game when he does very little analytical research and is clearly stuck in an antiquated view of baseball.

Don’t know if I’d call his season mediocre. He’s been walk-prone but the other peripherals are very solid. Opposing line is .222/.310/.291. That said, he’s a 24-year old AA reliever. Maybe he’s the rich man’s Andrew Laughter?

Pujols is better than Teixera defensively.

He’s having an off year, but for the last few years he’s been the best fielding first baseman in the game.

Yeah

everything Tex can do, Pujols can do about two times better. Everything. Pujols even uses chopsticks and parallel parks better than Tex

I think Tex has a better collection of Happy Meal toys.

And is slightly better at Wii bowling.

Other than that, yeah.

Give Vinny a shot at him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ha ha

I’d contribute. Even though Tex used to be one of my favorite Rangers.

For the record, we play the Angels 10 more times this season.

Nah ...

My love for Tex waned when I heard some of the stuff he said as he was exiting the club.

I sure as hell hope he doesn’t like it there too much and signs a long term deal.

We’re screwed if that happens.

In a fanpost not too long ago...

I posed the question:
“Do you think the Braves will get a single player as good as Feliz in a trade for Teixeira this year?”

Doesn’t look like it, huh?

One more thing...

I just posted this in one of the fanposts that just shot up about this…

But does anyone think this sets the trade market relatively low? The cost of getting Teixeira wasn’t very high.

i think this trade makes sense

for both teams. The Braves had had HAD to trade Tex and that return isnt too terible. I think its better than the draft picks, especially for a team that never tears it down to rebuild but is always sort of ‘rebuilding’ for the next year or two while trying to stay competitive in the meantime.

I dont think the angels resign Tex, but this sure cements them as the WS favorites. They’ll have great young pitching still but their outfield is going to start looking aging, overpayed, and in decline in a hurry, so this may be the widest their window will be for a while; of course that may be a little optimistic of me since it’s nice to think the Rangers will be ascending as the Halos take a few steps down.

Re-signing Teixeira or Vlad

Ken Rosenthal says that their efforts to re-sign Vlad (free agent after 2009) will make it tough to re-sign Teixeira, and that they will likely use Kendry Morales at 1B if Teixeira splits.

So given the choice, where do you spend your money? Teixeira or Vlad?

I say Teixeira is a Yankee next year (they’ve got lots of salary coming of the books this year… not that it really matters for the Yanks, but it only makes it more likely).

by Wemedge on Jul 29, 2008 6:15 PM CDT reply actions

B'more

could make a play for him, but the Yanks absolutely can and will trump their offer and I have yet to see any reason Tex wont go for the highest offer so i think youre right.

I also wonder if the Angels dont just decide to let Vlad go. He’s got an unusual body with a lot of miles on it that could decline quickly, and whats the point resigning him if they seem to be entering a period of diminished competitiveness.

Tex

I would think you would try to resign Tex over Vlad, since Vlad has no wheels anymore.
