Teixeira apparently traded to Angels
The Ticket is reporting the deal now. I'll update with a documented source when it's confirmed.
The deal appears to involve Casey Kotchman and Stephen Marek. Kotchman is having a down year, but I'm pretty happy that one of the potentially good long term bats is out of Anaheim. Marek was ranked by Baseball America as LA's #6 prospect in the spring, though he's moved to the bullpen this season in AA, to mediocre results.

Wow,
I think we did much better for Tex. Of course, we could offer him at 1.5 yrs rather than half a year (actually around 50-60 games). But there may be a good chance he signs with the Angels.

We did substantially better
I think the deal on the table from the Angels last year was Kotchman + Saunders/Santana + a kid or two. Basically, they don’t get the pitcher in the deal.
I agree with Z though – I’d rather see Tex in Anaheim for two months than Kotchman there long-term.
not after
signing GMJ and Torii Hunter! letting them go is turning out to pay off dividends for us…

We did MUCH better.
Not even close.
As I said in the other thread, for a team that’s out of contention I don’t think three years of Kotchman is a bad exchange for two months of Teixeira, but I can’t beleive they couldn’t get more.
they were probably hoping that Papi didn't make it back
or the Rays would offer top pitching prospects…

The grade on this deal depends solely on whether or not Teixeira resigns.
If he resigns, it’s a pretty good deal for the Halos.
If he walks after this season, this is a terrible deal for LAA.

As z said, Kotchman is a potential beast, and supposedly Marek ain’t bad. So I wouldn’t say that they got nothing.
However…Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz, Beau Jones and Matt Harrison for Casey Kotchman and Stephen Marek just sounds awful.

weird
The Angels finally (finally) have their big bat to hit behind Vlad. Seems like they’ve been trying to accomplish that ever since Vlad became an Angel. Glad it’s only going to be for half a season. It’s going to be really weird to see Tex in a Halos jersey.

seems to be a pretty weak return. but, given that Tex is likely a rental and will be bolting for the East Coast in the offseason, that was probably about all they could get.
I was never all that impressed with Kotchman. but, if this results in the angels winning the WS this year, i dont think you can call it a bad deal
I guess you can look at it however you like
but I see what he did last year as more representative of his ability, and his OBP is down 45 points, SLG down 20 from last season.

I feel like the Angels have been one big bat away from being a potentially dominant team for awhile now. I don’t really mind him being there this year, but I think the Rangers will actually have a contending team in the next few years, and I don’t wanna have to go through this Angels team with Tex.

And I think that he was basically a mouthpiece for the Yankees front office last summer.

I do think he's a talented writer.
But there’s a different between a guy who is good at telling baseball stories and offering baseball analysis. Or a guy who can tell you what it was like when he played the game and what goes on in the inside and a guy who can discuss baseball strategy and economics.
The biggest problem with ESPN is they force a guy to be all things. They have Kruk, a guy who can give wonderful insight on what it is to be a player, discuss front office matters and offer baseball analysis. They have Buster Olney, a quality reporter and good writer try and give an analysis of the game when he does very little analytical research and is clearly stuck in an antiquated view of baseball.
Marek
Don’t know if I’d call his season mediocre. He’s been walk-prone but the other peripherals are very solid. Opposing line is .222/.310/.291. That said, he’s a 24-year old AA reliever. Maybe he’s the rich man’s Andrew Laughter?
There seems to me no question that the Batman film "The Dark Knight"... is at some level a paean of praise to the fortitude and moral courage that has been shown by George W. Bush in this time of terror and war. -- Andrew Klavan
My thought is that a guy with really good stuff should basically dominate in moving to relief in AA. He just sort of kept doing what he did as a starter in the lower levels, which would seem disappointing to me. I guess his K rate is up.

might not be a huge factor, but the Braves are a cost-conscious team and they’ll save $3 million+ (Tex’s ‘08 salary obligation – Kotchman’s) this year.

thats all they got for him. kotchman with average power and will hit about .290, but he will be a longterm firstbaseman. and a so-so AA pitcher i wouldve just kept him for half a season get the 2 draft picks and let walk into the free agent market. its not like the BRAVES are going to lay at least 20 mil a year. but at least alanta got something.

One more thing...
I just posted this in one of the fanposts that just shot up about this…
But does anyone think this sets the trade market relatively low? The cost of getting Teixeira wasn’t very high.
"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
i think this trade makes sense
for both teams. The Braves had had HAD to trade Tex and that return isnt too terible. I think its better than the draft picks, especially for a team that never tears it down to rebuild but is always sort of ‘rebuilding’ for the next year or two while trying to stay competitive in the meantime.
I dont think the angels resign Tex, but this sure cements them as the WS favorites. They’ll have great young pitching still but their outfield is going to start looking aging, overpayed, and in decline in a hurry, so this may be the widest their window will be for a while; of course that may be a little optimistic of me since it’s nice to think the Rangers will be ascending as the Halos take a few steps down.
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Jul 29, 2008 6:14 PM CDT reply actions
Re-signing Teixeira or Vlad
Ken Rosenthal says that their efforts to re-sign Vlad (free agent after 2009) will make it tough to re-sign Teixeira, and that they will likely use Kendry Morales at 1B if Teixeira splits.
So given the choice, where do you spend your money? Teixeira or Vlad?
I say Teixeira is a Yankee next year (they’ve got lots of salary coming of the books this year… not that it really matters for the Yanks, but it only makes it more likely).
B'more
could make a play for him, but the Yanks absolutely can and will trump their offer and I have yet to see any reason Tex wont go for the highest offer so i think youre right.
I also wonder if the Angels dont just decide to let Vlad go. He’s got an unusual body with a lot of miles on it that could decline quickly, and whats the point resigning him if they seem to be entering a period of diminished competitiveness.
