7/29 post game thoughts

I stay away from the game threads these days, but was curious about thoughts on tonight's victory . . .

Was tonight the end for CJ as the closer? If so, who next? Closer by committee?

Did Guardado impress enough with those Ks of Ichiro and Ibanez to convince a GM to make JD an offer he can't turn down?

If you take the bunt off on a 1-0 count, why do you put it back on for a 2-0 count?

Note to Vazquez: In the last two games you made 3 errors, couldn't get down a sac bunt, and got picked off 3rd in a 1 run game with two of the league's best hitters at bat and on deck. Congrats on redeeming yourself, but you earned any booing you got.

The gameday threads arnt infectious

You can stroll in to make one post and not be plagued for life.

- No, its not. But Its one step closer, certainly. I expect an open competition next year, with frankie and CJ the top competitors
- I doubt one solid inning pushes anything over the top. However a bad inning could have pushed someone away, so its a success on the trade interest front.
- Why do you bunt with 2 strikes? I dont know. Because you have a silly attachment to bunting. I dont find this bunt quite as irritating as kinsler’s famous one since laird is a good bunter, but still.. hes red hot, should have let him hit.
- Truth.

gameday threads

I find that while the gameday threads serve their purpose (and I enjoyed them at one time), they’re not for me anymore.

by Randy Richardson on Jul 29, 2008 11:00 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

the point was that coming into one after one game for a few posts

isnt exactly the same as posting in them for 4 hours a day nearly every game. they dont have to be “for you” to skip through a few posts and ask a question after one game you particularly feel like discussing.

that said, not like I have a problem with this post or anything. theres enough content for a fanpost and such which I gave my replies too. just thought it was a strange comment to start it off.

Ramon's a beep

Glad to see a post game thread. There should be one after every game. I am not sure what to do with CJ. There are only ~2 months left in the season. Let him finish it out.

CJ

I’m now convinced that he should be pulled from the closer’s role. Not necessarily for his performance, but for his development. He looks defeated from pitch one now. Give him 8-10 semi-low-leverage pitching situations to get his confidence back up. Maybe having that label stripped away is what he needs right now to refocus himself.

Playing Time

Maybe I’m just noticing it a little more but seems there have been more players on this team publicly complain about a lack of playing time or splitting time or losing their playing time this season. It does seem a little odd since I think that this team at least in the public’s view seem to be coming together more as a team than in recent years. We’ve had Laird and Salty have their say. Ramon has stated that he thought he should be playing even when Blalock came back and IIRC even Hurley has stated that he thought he had done enough to stay up in the majors when there was talk he might go back to the minors after he first got the call.

CJ Wilson should be our closer, but not now

Some relief pitchers have closer-quality “stuff” and some don’t. CJ has the pitches to be a closer in this league. That is evident from the way he pitched in the beginning of the month vs. Baltimore and New York. He was throwing nasty stuff and dominating hitters.

While CJ has closer potential, he is obviously in a year-long slump. I think the best thing to do is remove him from the closer role and really all high-leverage situations in general. Have him pitch in less pressure scenarios (this means don’t allow him to enter the game with inherited runners) in the 6th or 7th inning. Once he starts pitching well and rebuilding his confidence we can put him back into the closer position.

4 games should not really prove that a guy is worthy of being a closer

and im not really sure that is such a thing as year-long slump.

IMO cj is 27 and has had his chances to prove himself and hasn’t. he should be a middle releiver who comes in when there are leftys coming up and COULD be an alternative 8th inning guy.

by Steal Home on Jul 30, 2008 2:03 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree

I think CJ has closer stuff, whether he can consistently do it is another question. If he can’t he shouldn’t be the closer.

by Agreen07 on Jul 30, 2008 2:10 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You and I

both know that CJ has had more than 4 dominating games. I think Agreen07 was using that as an example. Don’t knit pick it is very unbecoming and makes you look like you can’t come up with a legitimate argument.

I agree that CJ has closer ‘stuff’, but I don’t agree that you replace him for the year. Developing a closer is a lot like developing a QB, you have to totally commit or totally go a different direction. I think the Rangers should finish out the year with CJ and then bring in some competition for spring training.

Maybe, maybe not

I say we convert him into a 7th inning guy. If he succeeds there we consider giving him another shot at the closing job.

CJ

he’s got the ‘stuff’ to be a closer but I don’t think he’s got the head. He’s overthinks on the mound and can’t handle to pressure when the game is on the line.

Also I agree with everyone else that a year long slump trumps two good series. A blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.

I too, am a fan of the post game thread.....

A few thoughts on the pen….

-I really love Eddie. The fire and charisma that he brings will be hard to replace. Think about it, his stuff clearly ain’t waht it used to be, but he still brings it every time he pitches. Real good example for the younger guys…..I know LSB doesn’t care for these “charisma guys” or the guys that play with “grit”, but it is refreshing,

-I am on of the biggest believers in CJ, but to me, he does not have the stuff to be a closer. Closers need at least two plus pitches. CJ’s fastball is still hvering from 91 to the occasional 94, and seems to be his primary pitch. That has to develop into a more dominating pitch for him to be an effective closer in the bigs.

-How would some of you feel about trading a Laird, Salty, Cruz, and to a lesser extent Bradley (along with another scrub) to pick up some heigh ceiling relievers. In Bradley’s case, add in a JMJ and try to get a stud young pitcher (AA somewhere), with a couple lights out bullpen guys. Pipedreams maybe, but I would like JD to get some bullpen help in the form of young (21-24) reliever. The bullpen has become a pretty big weakness this year, and it seems like we can help that with a few trades.

by kman1415 on Jul 29, 2008 11:47 PM CDT   0 recs

Why not wait until the offseason to add a closer?

WAS apparently wants to give former uber-Dodgers prospect Joel Hanrahan a shot at closing next year which is why they traded Rauch and will DFA Chad Cordero after the season. Cordero could come cheap since he’ll be coming off shoulder surgery. Could be another Gagne-type pickup.

by Rangerchick on Jul 30, 2008 12:10 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm not a very big Chad Cordero fan

But if the Nats do release him, that is something worth looking into. And we all know how much JD loves his reclamation projects…

para3 …. I think I do not agree.

by rldwb on Jul 30, 2008 12:27 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Nay on adding a closer

With Eddie and FX2 around I see no reason to spend assets on a reliever right now. Either of those guys could close and I’d be okay with it.

Plus we have a ton of pitchers on the horizon, and many of them are going to end as relievers when/if they fail as starters. Madrigal, Diamond and Kiker have all been called future closer material at one point or another.

If we happen to get offered a high-ceiling bullpen arm in a deal I certainly wouldn’t thumb my nose at such an acquisition, but it’s not something I’d be targeting when I’m asking other GM’s for guys, you know what I mean?

The 40 Trumps All!!!

by thedirkatron on Jul 30, 2008 2:45 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I too think that they should keep their

eye on the ball for starting pitching prospects but if a great young relief stud comes into view I would def. consider it. I think that some of our ptichers who might become closers are deeper in the system and their role won’t become clearer until next year so unless madrigal truly is an option then the only guy i can see taking that role next year would be FX2. It seems like he could be a good closer now that his stuff is back to pre-TJ quality. But looking towards next year, would you be comfortable with only Wilson, Frankie and Madrigal (maybe Laughter and Garr as longshots) as the only guys competing for the closer role next year?

by Goyogringo on Jul 30, 2008 7:53 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Agree he had a bad night in the field,

I just think he’s an underrated player and i wouldn’t boo him because he seems like he gives everything he has and doesn’t often get the props like Kinsler or Hamilton do. If i’m gonna boo my own team I’ll reserve it for guys who are baggin, like Manny Ramirez not hustling down the line on a potential infield single against a no-hitter in a pennant race.

+ 1 yep you're right

You don’t boo a member of your own team unless they really deserve it. One bad game hardly eclipses all the good that Ramon has done for this team unexpectantly. He hadn’t been playing that much lately – he was rusty. Don’t try and tell me that it’s ok to boo your own player after he’s done a great job all year, I don’t care if he has one, two or three bad games in a row. The point is he’s been hustling all year. He had his job taken away from him for that china doll Blalock and then was put back out there only because the weaksister broke down again. He deserves better than that. Those fans who booed him are JERKS.

There is no status, except for me. Because I am who I am.

I put the blame on that one on Walbeck though

That was one of the most frustrating things I’ve seen this year. I got freaking enraged when that happened.

But isn’t that on the 3rd base coach? The player needs to be watching the hitter and the pitcher. As soon as Beltre made that break Walbeck should’ve been shouting to Ramon to Watch out! I went back and watched the replay and (though it wasn’t a good angle so I can’t say conclusively) I didn’t see Walbeck giving Ramon any sort of verbal instruction there. It sucks that it happened, but I can’t put it all on Ramon there. It’s not like he had a stupidly large lead or anything and he reacted well. He just had no idea it was coming cause stupid Walbeck didn’t do his job, imo.
