Thursday video tribute
In honor of the Bakersfield shortstop hitting his 4th homer of the year, and because tomorrow is a holiday (and thus we can't do a Friday video clip), I offer this tribute to the Blaze infielder:

Great song.
Zooropa—my favorite U2 album by a nose.

Love the band
Hate that song. Numb was by far the best song on that album. The kids still say “album” right?
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

Wait
Are you saying you hated Lemon or Zooropa the song?
Numb’s a great song, as well.
Hard for me not to go with Stay, though.
“Album”’s still good.

U2
I love U2 but I never understood people’s draw to zooropa. to me that’s possibly their worst album.

I saw them in Giants Stadium during the Achtung Baby tour and it was a freakin’ rock show, Jack.

Damn.
I was lame and decided to be a little kid during that time, but I’m jealous.
I’ve seen the last two tours.

Let me guess...
...Linkin Park fan? Or are you more along the lines of Fall Out Boy or any of the other numerous bands who sound exactly like them (and thus, crappy)?

how did I go from loving Bono
to absolutely hating his guts?
great stuff in their earlier years though…and I still like the Edge

honestly, that's not it...
I love Rage Against the Machine still, Elton John, and countless other bands/artists that I don’t see eye to eye with when it comes to moral, domestic and international issues…
but it doesn’t help. I think their music turned to shit in my opinion, and he turned into a freak. he’s ALWAYS got a cowboy hat on, with blue-shaded sunglasses, a smirk on his face that I wanna wipe off

to their music sucking, or bono's appearance?
you can argue that the recent 2 albums DON’T suck, but to me personally they are complete letdowns.
now: I’m the same guy that likes the RHCP even more now than I used to, but I will admit that thier old stuff kicks the new stuff’s ass.

I meant
Your reaction to Bono now.
Nobody’s going to argue that HTDAB is on-par with Joshua Tree or anything, but it wasn’t a letdown, to me. And All That You Can’t Leave Behind was a fantastic album, so I won’t agree with your characterization at all.
It’s perfectly fine if you don’t like them, I just thought it was weird that you have such vitriol towards Bono.

Pop = underrated
Please, Gone, Mofo, Staring at the Sun = great, great songs.
I think that, if you can get the image of the mirror-ball lemon and all of the other stuff out of your head while listening to the album, you’ll find the music is strong.

yeah it sucks, cause I really used to like him
but I do think his head’s gotten too big for this world. and he’s not going to come back down until he’s laying with the worms. sure, he does all of these humanitarian projects which is nice, but I really think he’s just got his head in the clouds…and I’m not a fan of it. It’d be nice if he took the shades and hat off, and just sat down for an interview for one of those promotions, and acted like a normal human being for a few hours

Well
I’ve always thought that he wears that stuff because he’s not the best-looking guy around, and his hairline has been receding the last 10 years or so. Same reason why Edge always has some headgear on.
Just makin’ a look. He owns that look now, so I’d say he’s been pretty successful.

Do people
Actually let a band’s ideology or clothes or actions actually affect how much they enjoy their music?
If so, that’s a completely foreign concept to me.

It cuts both ways
For instance, I listen to a group called “The Coup,” but I mostly disagree with their ideology.
Occasionally, they’ll make salient points about government corruption, political apathy, etc. But when I hear “fuck capitalism” and stuff like that, it’s usually enough to have me change the track.
I like U2 just fine, but you can definitely destroy good music with overly political statements.

I guess
But U2’s never done that—being so overt, I mean. They always get tagged as a political band, but I think in most cases, their songs only become associated with certain political images when Bono talks about it later, or somebody else matches it up to a certain event. You’re not going to hear “FUCK GEORGE BUSH” or anything like that.

Who start to think they are Jesus when they are on stage. Even worse when it starts happening off stage as well.
The guy from coldplay is starting to get like this.

Bono as Jesus?
I don’t believe he thinks he’s Jesus. He acknowledges that he has a messianic complex, but he’s also the first person to admit that he’s pretty much a douchebag like the rest of us.
He’s doing what he sees fit with his celebrity status. Rather than just waste it away on hot bitches and blow, he’s using it as currency (his own words) to get stuff done. I can’t blame him for that.
As for the music, they have gone a bit conservative the last couple albums, so I can’t blame you for not liking the music. Word is that there new album is supposed to be a bit more experimental…maybe they’ll bring you back into the fold, Sobchak.
Oh…and shut the fuck up, Donny.

A few snippets, it’s definitely some badass shit.
To me, it sounded like Unforgettable Fire melodies with Pop music. An ass-kicking combination. Can’t wait.

Middle Eastern/African influences
They also recorded a lot of the album in Morocco, so there’s supposed to be a little Africa and/or Middle East in the sound. We got a touch of it with Fast Cars…it’ll be interesting to see what they do with it on the new stuff.

There's a song
Called Cedars of Lebanon which may end up sounding like that. It’s hard to tell from the shitty recordings.
I wasn’t a huge fan of Fast Cars (the melody was pretty cool, though),but apparently they’re throwing out all the old left-overs from Atomic Bomb, so no Mercy or North Star.

Cedars of Lebanon
Do you have a link to a snippet of his song? I can’t come across one that will work for me. Are you a reader of interference.com?
As for Mercy, I actually kind of like the song. A bit long, but still pretty solid.

Coolio. Thanks anyway.
The thing about Mercy is that it was a U2 throwaway that, in it’s current incarnation, still blows 90% of today’s hot bands’ music out of the water.

I'll check it out
I’ve shied away from mainstream music lately, and new music pretty much alltogether. Right now I’m in a weird state of mind where I pretty much only listen to Bob Schneider/The Scabs, Three Dog Night, the Rolling Stones and a little bit of the Peppers…and that’s pretty much it. It’s like I don’t trust any other music to make my ears happy right now
