LSB Community Prospect Project: Mid-Season #3
Two landslides in a row? Is this Lonestarball or Landslideball? LOL! ... ... ... What? ... ... ... Don't look at me like that. That was a great joke. It was. I swear... Fine. I don't like you either.
Moving on to the non-hilarious segment of the post.
After capturing 65% of an even 200 votes, Neftali Feliz has won the right to be called the LSB Community #2 prospect!
The list so far:
1. Chris Davis
2. Neftali Feliz
This is where the vote starts to get really interesting. History suggest that the guy in second place (in this case, Eric Hurley) will step and win easily. But I think this might be an exception. The people who voted for a guy like Neftali would seem to be the sort who value ultimate ceiling over major league ready guys with lower-risk factors, so a lot of Neftali's votes could sprinkle elsewhere rather than just fall straight off to Hurley.
It should be good for some discussion either way :)
The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.
And please don't hesitate to tell me who you want on the list next.
NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who are currently in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect right now, so he goes on the list. It's that simple.

isnt there another list after the season anyway?
for midseason and these guys having been up 1-3 weeks, i think they can be included. better to include them now and reevaluate the system after trades and the full milb season.

Nothing wrong with a little Smoak
I have a feeling we’re all gonna feel very silly about where we rank him here when we look back.
But it’s so hard to vote for a guy who’s played zero pro games over a guy like Hurley who’s already in the bigs and showing sign he’s here to stay.

I voted Smoak too.
Assuming he signs, I think he’ll wind up no.1 by next year.
I was seriously thinking about Blake here though. Again, assuming his velocity begins to pick up and he can keep his BB’s insanely low, I think he’ll be right around this range next year.

not that i doubt he’ll sign, it’s just one thing to have never played pro ball and another when they arent even signed to do so

I voted for Hurley, fwiw
Though I voted for him before.
I know he’s more of a medium-ceiling guy in a system brimming with sexier high-ceiling prospects, but I just love the idea of a 22 year old “sure thing” who’s already in the bigs.

and I agree with you
I wanted to vote hurley, but I’m not sure he will reach #2 starter type in arlington, a very good number three perhaps. I also thought about smoak, main/beaven (once you vote one you are ready to vote the other as far as im concerned) and even andrus. All of those guys warranted consideration, but for those who havent figured it out yet, my vote went to….
Max Ramirez.
Okay all joking aside, because I know everyone was seriously waiting to see who I voted for, ramirez has been tearing the cover off the ball. In addition, and maybe this is because I can only compare his defense to salty for now, I’m not sure he cant stay behind the plate and play a passable catcher.

I worry just a little about
his ability to make contact. That’s the thing that could keep him from being the Teixeira type that people talk about. The approach seems to be there, and he has power. I haven’t seen enough of Smoak’s defense to have my own feeling on whether he’s as good as reported, and Davis looks just fine over there. But if I had to guess, just based on what you read, probably Smoak becomes the 1B, and they form the middle of the lineup with Hamilton for at least a couple of years. Davis will have the incumbency at the position, which makes a pretty big difference for some reason.

Incumbency
Well, I suppose there’s a little of the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality if Davis does alright, but you have to think if Smoak is all he’s cracked up to be defensively they can find a place for Davis.
Let’s just hope they don’t repeate the stupidity of trading a major talent because they have “too many” first baseman. Being of the no one is truly untouchable camp, I was not completely against the idea of trading Gonzalez—but it would have to have been in the right deal and that certainly wasn’t it.

Big Things In Small Packages: In Monday’s Ten Pack, the readers were re-introduced to Neil Ramirez, the 2007 supplemental first-round pick who is off to a roaring start at Spokane. However, he’s not the only Indian (yes, I know, it’s confusing) on the staff worth watching. The Rangers are always busy in Latin America, especially in terms of finding pitching, so their Northwest League affiliate has three prospect-worthy arms from the region in the rotation. While Carlos Pimentel and Wilfredo Boscan are both aggressive strike throwers with decent stuff, the best of the group is Venezuelan southpaw Martin Perez. Signed for over $500,000, 17-year-old Martin has a smallish six-foot frame, and already has three pitches that grade out as average or above. His fastball sits at 88-92 mph with good finish, and both his curveball and changeup project as above-average offerings. He’s an excellent athlete with one of the smoothest deliveries in the organization, and in his first three starts has posted a 2.45 ERA. He left his most recent start with a small finger injury, but he’s worth following when he returns.Even More Pitching: All but buried in a rotation that includes top prospect Neftali Feliz and 2007 top pick Blake Beaven, six-foot-five lefty Derek Holland is making a name for himself with a 2.64 ERA in 15 starts, and generating the scouting buzz to match. Southpaws who can touch 95 mph are a rare commodity, and Holland has done that this year, although his heat usually sits in the low 90s; he’s missing bats with both his heater and a plus changeup. His slider is average, and there are some concerns about him throwing across his body, but his size and the two plus offerings have him on a lot of people’s radar these days.

Smoak
By pure potential, Smoak looks to be a better bet than Hurley or Andrus..which is saying something. For this go ‘round I’ve thrown my hesitancy towards kids who haven’t shown enough (or ANY) out the window. That led me to undervalue guys like Beavan, Main, NRamirez, et al last time and I don’t want to do that this time.

Hurley again
Smoak looks nice but lets see how he handles wood before we hand him the keys. I’ve liked how Hurley has looked in the bigs commanding the zone, so I think he’ll be a pretty good starter for several years which should be worth a lot.

Hurley
Went with Hurley mainly because of what hes shown in the bigs. If he hadn’t have been promoted and was still in OKC then I would have probably gone with Max because his OKC numbers just weren’t very appealing. But what hes done in the bigs bumps him up a notch. My #4 will be Max.

I guess it is worth pointing out
That MaxRam has posted OBP of over 400 everywhere he has ever been. And his slugging pct has been trending up at each stop .449, .465, .500, .505, and then this year at age 23 in AA we see the big power spike (up to .662 !!!).
He looks like a middle of the order hitter with power and patience. Bats like his are exceedingly rare.

Going with the ceiling over Hurley’s seeming reliability. Hurley has had a few nice starts but we shouldn’t let that lull us into believing he’s a sure thing. I think he’ll be solid for many years, but he does have holes in his game.

Hurley
I wouldn’t have voted for him pre-season until #6, and a month ago I’d have told you he was barely even a prospect. But he’s been solid, if not good, in all of his major league starts so far. A handful of games doesn’t guarantee future success, obviously, but it does elevate his prospect status significantly in my book. Pitching for Texas counts for far more than OKC, Frisco or anywhere else.
MaxRam is more likely to be an all-star, Elvis more likely to be a super-star, but Hurley has shown he can compete at the Big League Level. He gets my vote.
by JBImaknee on Jul 3, 2008 9:48 AM CDT 0 recs

is pretty much the winner on this one. #4 should be interesting in a battle between andrus, ramirez, and smoak. Although, I am in the camp that believes maybe we should get the guy signed first.

If they don’t sign it’s easy to take them off or add an asterisk like we did when Danks and Masset got dealt. I talked about it in the first of these posts a few days ago… No one reads my posts though :(
And, yes, Ross will make an appearance.
And no Martinez won’t. At least I wasn’t planning on it. There’s no way in my mind that Harold Martinez is a top 15 talent n our system right now. But if y’all really want him, I’ll throw him on for you. It’s a community list, after all.

Well, maybe this will correct itself eventually
I imagine that a lot of people will not vote for unsigned players, so guys like Smoak and Ross won’t get voted in until they are obviously better than everyone else around them. And that’s probably for the best – kind of a community discounting of their value due to the fact that they aren’t signed. (note: Hey Smoak – if you are reading this, sign quickly and your status in the LSB community will rise…)

I honestly believe that Hurley is only 3
because of how he has pitched so far this year for the Rangers. If we held these rankings three weeks ago I imagine Max Ramirez, Elvis Andrus and Justin Smoak might have been ranked ahead of Hurley.
by Agreen07 on Jul 3, 2008 11:43 AM CDT 0 recs
of course that is the case
But it isn’t just that Hurley has pitched with the Rangers – after all, MaxRam has hit for the Rangers too, and no one is throwing Madrigal on the top ten (especially after yesterday…).
The difference is that Hurley has held his own on the mound and MaxRam looks like he isn’t quite ready. Minor league track record aside, major league stats count for a lot when valuing a player…

LHP Derek Holland has really been impressing the shit out of scouts in Low A. His fastball has been sitting in the 91-94 range with plus command and his secondary stuff is really improving.

He’s one of those guys you never really heard a lot of hype about until he started producing. The numbers look great, but I was always a bit skeptical that he was a “succeed in the low minors cause he’s polished, but lacks the pure talent to make it” kind of guy.
I’m pumped to hear scouts are high on his stuff.
