Chris Stewart a free agent
I just saw a note that indicated that former Ranger Chris Stewart has cleared waivers, having been dropped by the New York Yankees, and is now a free agent.
Which leads me to wonder...should the Rangers sign Stewart and let him back up Jarrod Saltalamacchia for the next few weeks, allowing Max Ramirez to go back to AAA?
Thoughts?

If Laird is going to be out for a while, they need someone else up here. MaxRam isn’t tearing it up, and he likely needs regular playing time.

yup
do it.
except, does max get regular playing time at any position in AAA? he’s have to split catching duties with TT, right?
From what I saw, he needs to get regular reps at catcher somewhere. He can play well enough to stick there.

It will benefit Max to be exposed to MLB then go back down.

Yes
I said the other day that a move like this is necessary.
I’m not worried about Duran getting limited playing time. But Max is a completely different caliber of prospect and the continued development of his RH power bat is something that should be very important to the team.

Duran
is getting dicked this year. Going into the year, I believe many people considered him a very legit prospect. But now it seems he is an afterthought, if not within the org, at least among its fanbase. He really would benefit from regular playing time down in OKC as well, and I am all for sending him down and bringing up Metcalf, who I consider an inferior prospect.

to the idea of Max back to minors,
signing a vet back-up catcher,
and giving Salty more PT
Please forgive any and all typos, mispellings, etc.
Your kindess in this matter is appreciated.

Backup catcher
Not opposed to the idea of the rangers getting a backup catcher and sending max back down, but stewart? surely they can do a little better right?

I think that would be a good idea
We’ve all been waiting for Max’s bat to kind of come around here in the bigs, and so far it hasn’t happened – I don’t think he’s getting enough playing time for it to happen myself.
He’d be a lot better off getting full-time AB’s at 1B/DH in OKC (although he’d still only be catching a couple times a week at most) just so we can keep his bat tuned in, and ready for a callup if we want to give him more playing time after the trade deadline.

Sounds reasonable
I think Max is ready to hit in the bigs, but I’d really like him to keep working on catching every day. I think you meant AA, not AAA…
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.

Yup
That’s a good idea. Also, release Gold and Shelton, so Max gets to play everyday at DH or 1B.

I don't think so
Max is only sitting at 23 PAs right now. Not nearly enough to say he hasn’t gotten it done. Let him play out Laird’s time on the DL, then make a decision whether to send him down. He was the best hitter in the Texas League for half of a season, I don’t know how much seasoning he needs.
I see the point on having him catch everyday to perform, but is he ever going to be an everyday catcher for anyone? Isn’t his best role as a once a week catcher/DH/1B? I think he will be fine in the big leagues for a month.

Because he isn't getting playing time in the big leagues
He can soak up all the atmosphere, but he needs reps defensively and he isn’t getting them here. Sitting on the bench five games a week is not going to improve his defense. Getting regular playing time in the minors will.

I think Max Ram is benefiting from this experience. With as many rookies and young players as we have now, i think we’re committed to being a young team and Max Ram should be invited to the party.

Absolutely...
Send Max down, and tell Saltalamacchia it’s time to poop or get off the pot. Give him the job 5 days a week and bring someone in to play the other day…
Max needs to be getting more frequent at bats, and with Bradley not being able to play in the field often and Davis warranting every day at bats, there’s just not enough time for Max to really learn…
Trying to find enough at-bats for Boggs, Max, Saltalamacchia, Davis, etc isn’t possible unless Bradley is ready to play RF everyday …

let’s keep Max around until Laird gets back. I do agree that he could benefit from regular playing time, but this should be a good learning experience as well. Laird is what, 3 or 4 weeks from coming back and you’ve got the all-star break?

Why not
just flip-flop TT and Ramirez in a week and let TT soak up the majors for three weeks, too? That way they have both been exposed to the atmosphere and would be better prepared to contribute if a real need arises (trade of Salt or Laird). That way, Max will also get to catch everyday at AAA (I believe everyone here would like him to end up as a big league catcher) instead of moving all over the diamond.

LSB had it wrong on Scotty...
...mentioned that most of what he read last year in regards to Feldman was negative… that he had a bag, and should have been DFA’d… but, that the organization obviously saw something else, and never gave up on him… briefly mentioned the pitching coaches…
obviously with his new approach, and a victory over the Yankees to boot… Scotty has been a key contributor in the run back to .500…
...and i will be the first person to admit that i sold him short last year… i’m really glad he’s turned it around…

Summary
Bob Sturm was talking about how the team seems to really like each other and seem like they are having fun, etc, etc.
CJ basically called out Tex as someone who was in it for himself and all about the money.
Basically, I love this team. It’ll be replayed tonight for sure on the Ticket Top 10 and sounds like it’ll be posted on BAD radios website.
CJ, again, you’re awesome

some veteran catchers
just a quick look at some vets out there, this was done fast so I dont know much about there health issues but here they are.
Mike Lieberthal 36
Mike Matheny 37
Damian Miller 38
Kelly Stinnett 38
I’ve always liked Lieberthal but I seem to remember something about some health issues. I like Mike Matheny and I like Damian Miller. I think what you could do here is sign one of these guys until Gerald gets back and then put the vet on the DL, then make your trade of either Salty or Gerald.

If you were depending on Salty
for the future wouldnt you rather have a Damian Miller type backing him up and teaching him the tricks rather than a guy he was competing against? If we keep Laird and trade Salty then I think you keep Max up, and I was just throwing around some veteran names!

I would do it...
MaxRam can DH everyday and catch twice a wek in OKC and give TT a break like they were doing in Frisco earlier in the year. He has got a taste for the majors but right now playing time is more important for him imo. He need’s to be getting more AB’s.

Max>Salty?
Salty is the younger of the 2 (and in the small sample size, the weaker defensive catcher). Why not keep Max up full time with Stewart the backup, and send Salty down. Maybe it’ll light a fire under him. Just a thought.
by chichitao on Jul 4, 2008 2:34 AM CDT 0 recs
You can't
be serious to think Maxram is a better catcher than Salty. Max was brought up from AA (which he hasnt even played a half season in) to be a backup to Salty while Laird is out and to play 1b/DH. He appears overmatched at the plate and now that Davis is here and taking over the 1b position I would think it best for Max to return to AA and get more experience behind the plate since 1B may not be in his future here. Putting him in AAA will hinder both he and TT developementally. I was surprised they didnt bring up Richardson from AAA who is already on the 40 and would do a good job as reserve and wouldnt have started Maxs’ clock. JMO.
