OT- NBA in Okc
I live in Oklahoma and im very happy to have a pro team in our state. Its seems like were the only ones happy and everyone else is hating. Oh well
This team is going to be young and fun to watch.
What do you yall think about the move?

I just wonder
How much revenue it will draw from the Mavs.
I’m thinking that it’s probably not as bad as Cuban says, but it’d be interesting to see.
Pretty good, young talent. I’d feel good about it.

You think
Cuban is going to sell?
I think there is a chance.

Yah
If getting Bavetta’d so hard by a smiling David Stern in the “Finals” didn’t prompt him to sell (which by his own admission it almost did, btw), then I can’t see how having a team in OKC is gonna be the final straw.

I'm not
saying selling because of that, but because he wants to focus on the Cubs if he buys the team.
He doesn’t seem motivated like he used to, such as not buying the late first round draft pick.

I think it's a great move
The NBA has shown it can succeed in smaller marketplaces that MLB and the NFL won’t touch simply by being the only game in town.
Salt Lake City, San Antonio, Portland, Sacramento and Orlando are all very successful franchises.
As long as their membership group isn’t horribly inept (see: Memphis), I expect this move to work out great.

New name
Since the name “Sonics” is staying in Washington, does anybody have any guesses as to what they will be called? I’ve got nothing.
Also, do you think there’s a chance they drop the word “City” from the team name to try and accomodate the entire state?

Oklahoma City
The mayor of OKC has said that the team name will be “Oklahoma City” and not “Oklahoma” because it is the residents of OKC that paid for the renovations to the Ford Center. I’m not sure if that’s the best logic in the world, but that’s what he said…

Guilty?
Don’t Oklahomans feel just the slightest twinge of guilt from stealing the Sonics away? I know I wouldn’t want a pro team under those conditions.

Seattle
Seattle ponied up money for a new football and baseball stadium. Oh and they ponied up to renovate the existing arena 10 years ago, which apparently isn’t good enough anymore.

Settlement
Seattle reached a settlement that allowed them to keep the name and history of the Sonics. It’s similar to the Ravens who left the name and history of the Browns in Cleveland.

The history will be “shared”.
I think when someone buys a team, they are buying the history that goes along with it. I find it bullshit that the Ravens have essentially no history because of their settlement.

by naming the team the OKC texas hats instead of the oklahoma texas hats, their marketing campaign will be bullshit. they wanna market themselves as oklahoma’s basketball team, but bullshit.

I work in Tulsa
And everyone here seems pretty fired up about the state getting a pro team. It’s a big step for a state that has really supported every team that has come its way (Tulsa Drillers have good attendance, as do the af2’s Tulsa Talons…from what I understand, the Redhawks have good numbers, too).
There is a little bit of guilt about how the team is coming here, and the circumstances, but I think people are really excited.
And as much as the mayor of OKC wants to complain and demand this and that, he really has no say in what the team name is. My money is on “Oklahoma” rather than “Oklahoma City”, for the sake of wider branding, and not alienating fans from elsewhere in Oklahoma (namely Tulsa).
As for a name, the names “Twisters” and “Thunder” have been floated around. I happen to like Oklahoma Thunder. Has a ring to it.

You know, I'm really happy to hear someone else say that.
I had my doubts when I first worked here, and it gets overlooks a whole lot, but you know what? Tulsa’s a pretty cool town. Good arts scene, some very underrated restaurants, friendly people. Big enough that you feel like you’re in a city, but small enough that there’s little traffic.

Arenas really do revitalize downtowns.
