7/3 minors
Since there is no game today, I'll go ahead and put this up.
AZL - They're playing now and have Levi Romero on the mound
Spokane - Mr Perez should go tonight
Clinton - apparently Holland
Bakersfield - Kiker up
Frisco -
Oklahoma - Harrison
(wow, Frisco will screw it up, but how about five lefties on the same night?)
Chris Davis and Max Ramirez both made BA's midseason all-star team:
1B Chris Davis Rangers Team: Triple-A Oklahoma (Pacific Coast) / Double-A Frisco (Texas)
Age: 22
Davis crushed his first home run in Yankee Stadium Wednesday night, giving him three long balls in his last five games, but it's his minor league resume that earned him a spot on this team. Even though he's missed the last week, Davis still ranks fifth in the minors in home runs, fourth in RBIs, fourth in runs, fourth in slugging, fifth in extra-base hits (45) and second in total bases (191).
DH Max Ramirez Rangers Team: Double-A Frisco (Texas)
Age: 23
You won't find a better offensive performance in the minors than Ramirez's, even though, like Davis, he's currently in the big leagues. Ramirez may not stick at catcher, but his bat is too loud to ignore. He leaves the Texas League having ranked first in average, on-base percentage and slugging, and third in home runs and extra-base hits (35).
Neftali Feliz was an honorable mention as a starting pitcher.

Last year, the Rangers trotted out Marlon Byrd, Nelson Cruz and Kenny Lofton most frequently as outfielders. Well
A lot of black Dominicans call themselves negro/negra, so yeah, I could show you a shitload of them who wouldn’t mind it. It doesn’t have anything close to the connotation that you’re giving it.
Like Dirk said, black isn’t a nation-specific term.
by brettgardner on Jul 3, 2008 6:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I refuse to argue with you about this all night but...
According to a study by the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute, about 90% of the contemporary Dominican population has some African and taino ancestry.[60] Most Dominicans self-identify as being of mixed-race rather than black in contrast to African identity movements in the United States. A variety of terms are used to represent a range of skintones depending on ancestry such as “morena” (brown), “canela” (red/brown), “india” (Indian), “blanca oscura” (dark white), and “trigueño” (wheat colored),[61] among others.
Not that wikis the most reliable source but they don’t seem to reference themselves as black.

Hah, nice
Not to start a big “racism” debate, but that reminds me of a conversation I once had with an acquaintance of mine. His parents had immigrated from Jamaica and he had a pet peeve about being called “black”. He said he wasn’t black, he was Jamaican. I told him that someone calling you “black” refers to skin color only. It’s not like they’re saying you’re from somewhere specific when they say black. They’re not implying that you’re from Blackistan or Blacksylvania. Just that your skin is dark. If they called him African American, then I could see him could get all pissy, cause he was not African.
Anyways, I’m always confused about when you use skin color to designate someone’s skin color, when you use nationality instead of skin color and when you’re supposed to pretend you don’t notice skin color at all cause you’re enlightened and only dumb redneck racists see things like that.
The complexities of being PC sometimes make my pretty little head spin.

The Smoak love is great
and well-deserved, but its a bit premature to talk about him in the future at 1B while we just promoted Davis and Smoak has yet to sign a contract. In all likelihood, Smoak won’t even begin playing until next year and the question won’t have to even come up until 2010. At that point, you look at what Davis is giving you, what your other positions are giving you, and determine if Smoak’s value to the team is at 1B moving Davis to another position or in a trade.

Is there some disconnect
between the coaches and the organization (along the lines of Washington’s Davis declaration)? Ever since the comment was made that they were building Fabio Castillo back into starting, he’s relieved. He’s relieving again tonight.
by Brett Perryman on Jul 3, 2008 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's strange
Pitching coach Danny Clark made it seem like the top priority was to build up his pitch counts and his strength, specifically in his lower-half. I guess starting along with the two side-sessions is proving to be too much for Castillo.
by jparks77 on Jul 3, 2008 9:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I've been thinking about that, too
But in the same interview that Danny Clark talks about stretching Castillo out as a starter the following exchange takes place regarding the little lefty Ortiz:
Cole: Do you know if Ortiz will be here for the long-term?
.
Clark: That I don’t know. That’s higher up than me.
Which, IMO, might be a clue that somebody higher up than Clark possibly changed their mind about Castillo’s role directly after Clark declared Fabio a starter.

He was cruising thru 4 but the bully let him down in the 5th. He’s not dominating but he is holding his own as an 18 year old pitching against mostly college aged hitters. It makes you really appreciate what Martin Perez is doing this season. Unbelievable.

Martin Perez is freaking incredible
I don’t even know how to view him. A 17 year old in the NWL more than holding his own? That’s just pure craziness. Our system is so loaded it seems silly to put him in the top 10. But then again a 17 year-old doing what he’s doing in the NWL and not making a team’s top ten prospect list seems even sillier, imo.

Bakersfield
has a tendency to do that, hence the neftali feliz promotion. As psyched as I am about the jump it makes me wonder if they didnt think he could mentally handle his lumps in bakersfield or if they really thought he was ready for frisco. I think it is the later, but that could be blind optimism.

Weekly Minors Threads
I think it would be a good idea to start a weekly minors thread that we can rec and keep updated as the week goes on.
What do you think?

One problem
Some of those nightly minors threads get long enough. I can only imagine how long those weekly threads will get.

Good point
Let’s see how long the current one gets and we can adjust from there. Hopefully it takes several different threads to hold all of the discussion.
