Trade deadline thoughts
As the trade deadline draws closer, it seems like the most likely fit, if any, for this team could be a trade with the Marlins, who are still reportedly seeking a catcher and a LHP in their bullpen. I have attached a poll to get a feel for what people around here are expecting in return for a guy like Laird and Guardardo.
But I also wanted to ask an open ended question. It is starting to seem, at least judging from a few of the most recent trades, like this may be more of a buyer's market than a seller's market. The Rangers have a number of young players who are blocked down on the farm, guys who don't get much love in our system but who could present value for another team (look at the list of guys still on the board in our current LSB prospect ranking process, and add guys like Osuna and Kirkman who aren't even on that list yet). Should the Rangers entertain the idea of being buyers if they can land a guy like Washburn or someone of his ilk (slightly overpaid for his abilities but trending in the right direction).

It definitely feels like a buyer's market...
I’m in favor of keeping Padilla however I am somewhat curious how much interest there would be in him if JD floated his name around (maybe he has) b/c right now Jarrod Washburn is the only decent SP on the market.

i would think
that JD knows when to sell high. I think that guys like Padilla and Bradley had their names floated already and the offers indicated that teams are weary of their past, both mentally and physically, to the point that JD decided they have more value on this team than on the trade market.

players being blocked
Players in A ball are never blocked by anyone. As good as Ian Kinsler is you don’t start trading off all your 2B prospects because of him. Now once they get to AAA and maybe even AA then you can start to project who may or may not have a position. But as we learned with the Adrian Gonzalez trade you can never have enough good young players no matter what position they play.
Our catchers for instance. All 4 are ML ready. That means 2 are blocked. Now take our 2B/SS position. With Duran being injured Andrus is the closest prospect to being ready. Hes in AA. Then we have guys like Vallejo, Lemon, Osuna who are all barely in AA or lower. Let them play their way to the cusp and then you can move them. You can get alot more in return for a Vallejo or Osuna when they are ML ready than when they are in A ball.

Ugh
Arias is more major league ready right now then Elvis, and he would probably do pretty good, its not like I am a big fan of his, but he’s a guy that I think too many people have writen off too early

i think arias
could easily hit .290, but you are right, his OPB would still only be around .315. still, i agree that he was written off too early. if Young had gone on the DL, I would have liked to see Arias w the Rangers.

I still would not mind buying...
If it was a player that has several years left on his contract. Washburn is a good example since his contract runs through next season. I think Seattle would take him for a decent prospect as long as you ate all of his salary.
Now I do not want to take on his salary (or other large salaries) if it will block us from attempting to sign Sabathia and Sheets.

Washburn is an established crappy pitcher
If I’m going to see crappy pitching, I want it to be from young kids who are still learning. At least there’s a chance they’ll learn from their mistakes and turn into good pitchers. Guys like Washburn are too old and set in their crappy ways… that, and Jim Knox won’t like having competition for the underaged girls at the ballpark.

Washburn
the yankees offered to pay his salary for the Ms in exchange for having him pitch for the Yankees. That is way better than should be offered for him

Random Question...
Not that this would ever happen given the circumstances. I’ve seen people saying that since Blalock is now on the DL, he CAN’T be traded. Could he be traded as a PTBNL? I know that would not be realistic, but COULD he be traded? Or is the PTBNL just reserved for minor leaguers?

Yes he could be traded
but it would require approval from the Commisioner

John Perrotto chat at BP
Took a bunch of questions on the Rangers’ catchers. Says he hasn’t given up on Salty and would keep him. Says Laird alone is worth a player that could help in the majors now and a good prospect. Add Guardado to a Laird deal and you could get two players for now and a good prospect for later.

Perrotto
seemed pretty high on Laird, and yes, he indicated that the package above might actually be a little light on the Marlins end. Still, if we ended up with the package above, I would be okay with it. We would be buying low on Tankersley and Vandenhurk has not been handled well by the Marlins.
