JD tried to trade Blalock for Jonathan Sanchez?
According to major-league sources, the Giants were scouting Texas third baseman Hank Blalock, who went on the disabled list with a sore shoulder Tuesday. The Rangers contacted the Giants about Blalock, a 27-year-old with some (but not overwhelming) power. The Rangers covet Giants pitching, including Jonathan Sanchez.
Big-time strike out pitcher, only 25, isn't prone to the longball. Sanchez certainly would classify as a young MLB ready pitcher who hasn't put it all together yet but has the talent to be really good, something apparently JD is looking for. If JD had been able to pull this off I would have been extremely happy. Unfortunately since Blalock is now on the DL that's the end of that. This is a sign though that JD has indeed been active in trade talks.
Here is a write-up of Sanchez if you aren't familiar with him.

Sabean has made some questionable moves
but I dont see even him doing tat.
Maybe as part of a larger deal.
If something liek that was actually close though.. ugh.

the "he" in question
was Ron Washington, from what I have read. He figured Hank’s pain may pass in a day and no one needed to be the wiser. that stuff happens all the time, i would think.

A smart move by JD and Wash to hide it

not so smart
if the cover can be blown so easily. luckily, JD was letting trade partners know about the shoulder problems before hand.
still, I bet GM’s will be pressing for physicals from now on

Well true

Last year
things broke our way at the deadline. this year things seem to be breaking away from us. i was certainly spoiled with the deadline action JD was able to pull off last year, but this year, unless some team wakes up tomorrow with a dire need for a young catcher, i am expecting this team to stand pat. it would have been ideal to trade Laird and maybe another piece (Cruz, Byrd, Cat, Guardardo, etc) and one of those second tier guys may still move in a small deal just before the deadline, but it looks like this year’s July festivities will end with a wimper instead of a bang.
Can’t really complain, as long as we still get to see what all the young guys can do in the big leagues for the remainder of the year.

Sigh...
That opinion is becoming prevalent with me too, but I hold out hope.

even if we didn't get sanchez
blalock getting injured was pretty much the worst timing. I know this isn’t his doing and it’s not like he’s vetoing trades (a la Palmeiro), but this makes me hate Blalock a lot. I guess the Rangers thought about hiding the injury under the stomach problems guise but Blalock blew the cover.
what a terrible ending to a very disappointing saga

Anything else we have
that the Giants, who think they are in contention might want?? I know they just got Posey, so that probably takes catchers off the market, unless they want to have Laird as a stop gap until he gets there but we would have to probably throw something else in….

they have molina
although saw a link to an article that said if they trade molina to the marlins that they would have interest in laird so dont be so sure. That being said, the marlins were offering mike jacobs for him so it doesnt look like that is going to happen.
Florida needs a catcher VERY badly and the fact that laird and salty, to an extent, can help them right now in the thick of a playoff race and for years to come makes me think that if they are smart, which they are, they will step up to the plate and do what they need to do to get a catcher and possibly guardado (although they might be about to acquire arthur rhodes). Hey, they last time we made a trade with them, and pretty much every time, at least one side, if not both, have been very happy with the results.
I'm sorry my parents never had me sarcamsized.

Fla
The thing with them is that they give away their veterans in a firesale and yet seem to rebuild and win a World Series every 6 years. Hell, their on schedule to win one again in 2009 and with the roster they have, I don’t see why they can’t….

Blalock injury
Reminds me of last year when Aki had a ton of value, only to get injured right before we could move him.
Injuries really suck this time of year.
Warner Madrigal makes Ezequiel Astacio look downright handsome.

I am not sure how much value
Blalock really had. But Aki, that was really tough. He certainly had more value than Gagne.

Aki came back next year and had a couple more years in him.

Why?
I don’t think the Rangers own any rights to him. I don’t care if he is done from baseball atm. He is just another bad reminder of a bad trade.

I could of sworn I read something about him...
trying out for the Rangers next year. If he pitches anything like he did the last 2 years I’d love to have him back. This sad sack bullpen could definately use him until the young studs are ready. I don’t base things on trade reminders…unless your name happens to be Whiffy Whifferson :)

Aki...
We didn’t offer him arbitration, and he is a FA. However, I read somewhere within the last few months (no link) that he is interested/would be willing to return to the Rangers after his elbow is fully recovered and he is able to pitch again.

Can you imagine
how Blalock feels? I wouldn’t wish this streak of injuries on anyone, and this is a guy who had a great future in front of him. I hope this year and last are just flukes and the right shoulder can be rehabbed in the off season for his sake, and the Rangers sake.
