Yankees no longer a potential suitor for OMFT, Manny dealt (?)
According to this link on the ESPN site, NYY has filled its catching vacancy by adding Former Ranger Great Pudge Rodriguez. Pudge waived his no trade with the motivation of escaping Detroit, a crappy city with a mediocre baseball team.
For his services, Detroit acquired the Ever-Desirable Kyle Farnsworth.
I don't think there's much question that Cashman and Co. would have preferred Laird to Pudge; but recall, the packages we were unsure if we would TAKE involved players significantly more valuable than Farnsworth. I don't like the Tigers in this deal unless there's a PTBNL involved.
Additionally, BP reports that Florida is on the verge of acquiring Manny.

i would think
that MLB chooses (don’t they choose, i remember this coming up w/ wade boggs) and his peak/longest period of play was with texas.

NIXON: NOW MORE THAN EVER
Yea they do
Boggs was rumored to have a clause in his contract to wear a Rays hat upon election. The hall decided to change the rule to where they are the choosers of the hat.
This is the Texas Rangers, professional destroyers of hope, we're talking about. - BAC
Yeah, Joe Morgan talks about this in his chats a lot.
The committee considers the desires of the inductee, but they don’t always give them their wish. They weigh a lot of things, including who a player is most represented by, where was he most loved, highest profile, at his best, etc. Also, in the case of guys like Gary Carter, Dave Winfield and Nolan Ryan, they consider if one of the teams he most represents has a Hall of Famer or not yet. Carter went in as an Expo because the Expos weren’t represented.
Pudge will almost inarguably be a Ranger. If Raffy ever gets in, he’ll be a Ranger too, I’m sure. After that, we have to wait for some of these young guys to be Hall of Fame caliber.
Here’s a question: A lot of very smart people make a great argument that Kevin Brown should be in Cooperstown. Ignoring the argument about whether he should be in or not because it’s too long for this space, if he DID get in, which cap would he wear (if any)?
Maybe the Tigers will try to acquire Salty
Come on JD – you know you can get Porcello from them :)
(I’m just kidding, for those who can’t tell…)
They'll have Inge catch

no thanks
Laird for Farnsworth, no thanks.

Pudge
is not a long-term solution for the Yanks. And Posada might not come back to catch again. He might have to DH or play first. Even if he does come back he is not long for catcher. So, the Yanks might be potential trade partners for catching in the offseason.

Good
Marlins or Brewers are a better fit. Cashman doesn’t get owned in trades.
Josh Hamilton is better than you.
Yankees
I am actually glad we are not trading with them. I can’t remember the last deal they “lost”. let’s face it, brian cashman is a good GM.
I don't think this affects Texas at all.

Think long-term.
Pudge is not a long-term catching solution for NYY, which is what they need. They’ll be back after Salty/Laird in the offseason.

Well does to a degree...
the Yankees had shown interest in Laird

well, what's the point of showing interest
and not wanting to give up diddly.
Josh Hamilton is better than you.
maybe if pudge wasn't on the market
they would have given something up for Laird….

This isn't a bad development for the Rangers.
Cashman usually avoids giving up anything that’s really good in trades and typically wins more than he loses.
And if we let New York fleece us in another ARod/Sori fiasco, that would be death worthy for our GM.
Why is this good for the Rangers?
I’m confused.

Cashman never gives up good young players.
We probably weren’t going to get a deal done with the Yankees. Now there is one less catcher on the market for the Floridas and Cincinnatis of the league to go after. I think we’ll be okay here.
Farnsworth is who Detroit gets back

If I am a Rays fan
I would be pretty pissed right now. They have such a deep farm and they haven’t even touched it. I still think they give in and do what it takes to get Bay.
Or they go over the top in an offer for MB!!!
jk

Lowballing
Well I am ecstatic that we didn’t waste a catcher for some Yank spare. This was stupid move for Det, they could have just offered him arbitration and got 2 picks, and now they get what cash relief and nothing more.
They get a reliever who is pitching well now...
"Sooner or later, prospects kill you, because you hang onto them." - Greggo, 11/22/2005
Arbitration
I’ve seen reports that Pudge would be a type A free agent, but neither the Tigers or Yankees would risk offering him arbitration. He makes 13 million this year and will have to take a significant pay cut wherever he plays next year. So arbitration was never an option with him.
by Randy Richardson on Jul 30, 2008 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions
Wow
seems like the Yankees just absolutely raped two teams here. Pudge is still putting up very solid numbers for a catcher and Farnsworth is just another run of the mill reliever, know idea why the Tigers did this
Well...
...Detroit is hurting for 8th/9th inning help. Todd Jones is stru-uh-uh-uhggling, and Zumaya isn’t 100 percent.
Still, that’s selling awful low on a first-ballot HOFer.

Detroit wanted a reliever
not a bad move by them…and it is salary relief.

Pudge
Isn’t he a free agent next year?
by BillyBobisdrunk on Jul 30, 2008 3:49 PM CDT up reply actions
seriously
Farnsworth’s career ERA is like 4.45, above lg avg, he’s pitching a little better now, but not great. Why do they have to trade a key cog to their team to get an avg Reliever??? This just seems like a dumb move for the present and for the future.
key cog to the team?
I think you are overstating Pudge’s role on the Tigers. He is a key cog in name only—Cabrera, Ordonez, Granderson, Polanco, and Guillen are all much more important to the Tigers offense than Pudge is. I dont think at this point Brandon Inge is much of a downgrade.
Pudge a Yankee...
what a terrible thing.

Pudge
2nd greatest Ranger ever. Glad he’ll get an opp to win another WS though. Detroit sucks.
Josh Hamilton is better than you.
STRONGLY disagree
One of these guys had 976 equivilent runs over 1,400 games as a Ranger. The other had 761 over 1,479.
The latter was an ELITE catcher, however, while the former was a below-average corner outfielder.
Both were primarily Rangers, and one is rightfully going to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot, the other is rightfully never getting close.
that's fine
but for some reason, for me, what Juan did in the 96 playoffs was stuff of legends and that’s why he is one.
Josh Hamilton is better than you.
That series was great
but one great series does not a legend make. Had it taken us into the ALCS, it’d have been a different story.
i said that put it over the top
i kinda think he was good during the regular seasons as well with Texas.
Josh Hamilton is better than you.
Yeah...
Juan had some great seasons as a Ranger. Pudge was great as a baseball player.
Arguments can be made that Pudge is one of the top 3 catchers of all time. ARod is probably the best player to ever put on a Ranger uniform, but Pudge is pretty close.
try ARod

Arod best ranger ever
but not best ranger career
"Sooner or later, prospects kill you, because you hang onto them." - Greggo, 11/22/2005
The best player ever to play for the Rangers.
Not the best Ranger ever.
Limit a player’s career to the Rangers and judge players the same way you would their careers. A-Rod’s got a three year career, and Pudge is probably the best by quite a bit.
If I were the Yankees
I would have asked for Brandon Inge instead of Pudge.

Cashman is a genius
Replaces perennial all star with HOF. This is what a big market club can do, eat cash and not lose any prospects. Oh, what the Rangers could be if they could do that.
Inge
Maybe the Rangers should try to trade for Inge. Give up a catcher and get Inge and other minor leaguers. Inge can play 3B and is a free agent after the 2010 season. Young could then slide over to make room for Andrus
Signature! I don't need no stinking signature!!
Ingle
is a good ball player. Can play 3B, OF and C.

what is detroit thinking?
horrible move unless they just want the Yankees to win
They don't get a little trophy
because the Yankees win the world series.
"Sooner or later, prospects kill you, because you hang onto them." - Greggo, 11/22/2005
OK, again, it's not a terrible move.
Detroit needed 8th/9th inning help with a struggling Todd Jones and an unhealthy Zumaya.
NYY needed a catcher an a No. 7 hitter.
It works for both teams. You can knock Farnsworth all you want, but it’s not like Pudge is still beating the world.
"But the point is, [Jeff] Mathis is a bush-league uber douche." -lonestarJon
Teams in contention...
such as the red Sox, tampa. chicago…..have to be PISSED over what has happened the last 2 days.
Tex given to the Halos (only person that mattered was who Tex was replacing)
Pudge given to the Yankees
Tex given to the Halos
for Atlanta, Kotchman + Marek > 2 picks

I think this leaves...
4 possible trade suitors for 1 of our catchers. Marlins, Reds, Brewers, and Tigers. Of those 4 I’d say the Marlins and Brewers will make the strongest push to acquire someone.
