Trade talk

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/royals/story/727881.html

The Rangers have asked about pitcher Zack Greinke and appear willing to part with multiple prospects in return.

Yeah, I've been up since 6:00 AM awaiting some juicy rumors and this is the closest thing I can find relating to the Rangers... So if you want to vent about the lack of activity so far go ahead......  or talk about JD obviously reading LSB by stealing  the Grienke idea go ahead...

well, its a long way off but you do have to consider the draft picks.

of course, with our luck hed probably suck, get injured and not get us any draft picks.

and yeah.. hes had a 5.22 era in july, a 5.25 era in june, and a 4.38 era in may, and obviously was awesome in april.. you have to be careful what you give up for 2 years of him. hes good, but hes not THAT good.

greinke

well, it would qualify as trying to help the team win this year if the clubhouse is still clinging to that.

id give up salty and one of the A ball pitchers, but feliz has to be untouchable.

if we found a way to get greinke without giving up feliz or davis, and also got something decent for laird, id consider this a successful trade deadline.

Feliz and Davis.

I would imagine that both are off limits in any trade that doesn’t involve a young pitcher under team control for many seasons. I’d like to have Greinke, but not at the expense of either Davis or Feliz.

Great deal by them. With players of minimal value like Rhodes I would definitely prefer quality of quantity.

The Mariners get back a 22 year old RHP SP who projects as a #4. Much better than two more months of Rhodes when you aren’t contending and won’t get a draft pick.

it gets tiresome

hearing people slam Greinke for his “mental” stability…
If anyone here has dealt with depression (the kind where you see a counselor and take meds) they will understand what he was going through. they will also understand how depression is absolutely beatable and your life gets sooooo much better after dealing with it. He’s past it and learned from it. Give him a break.
And my perception now is that there are a whole lot of people out there that are depressed and need to get some help to make themselves happier and enjoy life.

I agree

there may be reasons to not trade for Greinke (costs too much, free agent too soon), but his depression issues are certainly not one of them.

I’d imagine that a significant number of baseball players are treated for depression, etc (I’d even guess at a higher rate than the rest of the population). Greinke was an extreme case, sure, but that doesn’t make his issues something to worry about.

by JBImaknee on Jul 31, 2008 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd have to disagree with you.

I just don’t think Greinke is an ace caliber pitcher. He is a solid #3 definitely, probably a decent #2, but not an ace.

I like Grienke but ...

there is little if any incentive for KC to trade Grienke for prospects right now. That’s why I don’t see Grienke being traded unless someone blows KC away with a young stud at first or 3rd. That’s just not a price I think the Rangers are willing to pay.

there is just too much we have yet to find out about our best young prospects … and I’m tired of seeing them go elsewhere only to tunrn out the way we’d hoped they would with us. No to Davis, Feliz, Hurley, Hunter, Teagarden, Maximus, Andrus, Beltre, Holland, et.al.
Salty, Diamond, Kiker, Arias I would consider moving … in the right deal … but I’d rather do nothing than blow up the farm system.

Because Texas doesn't need him.

Sad to say, but when you look at the Rangers’ catching corps, he’s kind of the odd man out.

Laird is the “proven” commodity, the one that you know what you’re getting.
MaxRam is a better hitter than Salty.
Teagarden is a better defender than Salty.

Salty is an alright defender and could end up being a very good bat, but he is not great at anything.

I think you're being too generous.
Salty is an alright defender and could end up being a very good bat, but he is not great at anything.

I wouldn’t describe his defensive play this season as “alright”. I think he’s a poor defender with the potential to be a good hitter. Right now, he’s not living up to the potential and I like our other catching options better. If he can be traded for a good pitcher, I think you make that move.

by Athos on Jul 31, 2008 10:29 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Salty

I am certainly in no hurry to trade him, but if he can net a solid pitcher, then he needs to go. We are dealing from a position of strength.

by clark on Jul 31, 2008 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not anxious to deal him

I just don’t want to see him stuck behind Laird for the rest of the season. If you think he’s had a tough season so far, making him a backup is going to purely stunt his development, and I don’t want to see that happen to him. So if trading him is the only way he avoids that… then so be it.

Where will he play?

The only scenarios I see are benching Swisher and playing him in center (which he doesn’t have the range to do anymore, I’m sure)...

...or to bench Konerko and move someone to first (presumably either Thome or anyone else who’s willing to make the switch). But that certainly seems like a slap in the face to Konerko, the guy who really carried that franchise for a while earlier this decade.

If you put him in the outfield...

...that means you’re benching either Swisher, Dye or Quentin. Swisher is the obvious choice, but then who plays center?

You can’t bench Dye, considering he’s probably your best all-around hitter this year (both avg. and power).

And benching Quentin at this point would be blasphemy, considering he’s leading the universe in homers.

And in a completely unrelated note, Carrie Underwood is super hot. Good lord, I haven’t seen her in a while, but golly gee willikers.

Dunn for Niemann

Tampa Bay really needs to pull the trigger on something like this. Niemann is already 25 and projects to be nothing more than a #5 with injury history. They have a obvious pitching surplus and a need for hitting. When Carl Crawford is hitting in the 3 hole that should tell you something.

too much money for a guy that’s injured an awful damn lot. I’d rather watch Max or see if Cruz is for real than pay to clog up our DH position for the next three years. What happens when Smoak is ready also?

Mahay is in his 30’s, and we don’t need to give up any prospects for him. We need to be dealing the 30-year old reliever, not accquiring one.

I think it boils down to....

Teams are not giving up prospects this year….there are very few trades that I wish we were in on (rhodes deal being the exception)

Its a buyers market…JD will see this, and will deal for Mahay for this year and next year for an average prospect….(arias or something like that)

JD will not trade Laird because he will not get a solid return for him.

Bah

Griffey and Manny are old farts. Manny still produces at least, and there would be a lot of players involved in that, but still… just meh. The Tex deal was underwhelming (I feel sorry for the Braves), leaving Dunn as the only true possible blockbuster out there.

Myself, I am going to be slighty pissed off if JD sits on his hands today – we’ve got several guys (Bradley, Padilla, Guardado, Laird) having seasons the likes of which they’ll likely never have again. Not trading even one of them would severely dissapoint me.

Based on the returns so far

I will be happy is JD sits on his hands. This has been a buyers market this year and teams appear to be intent on holding on to their prospects. I would love a trade, but the rangers have a very specific need and it appears that no one is parting with young pitchers this year.

plus they have some nice young pitching prospects in sean west, aaron thompson, brett sinkbeil, etc. of the top of my head, but no real young catching to think of other than skipworth who is years away if he can even stay behind the plate (there were a few people who questioned he would stick there before the draft). by clark on Jul 31, 2008 11:18 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have a hard time believing

that a contender picks up Cruz. It really doesn’t make any sense. If you want a bench player, you want a vet, like Cat. If you want a starter, a contender can’t live with “giving the last chance” to a AAAA player.

After the phones cool down this afternoon, JD & company sit down and decide what they want to do with Cruz. Allowing him to complete the AAA season and become a free agent seems the least likely. More likely would be a trade or a call-up to Texas. Maybe other deals earlier in the day make the choice obvious.

If he’s to be traded, I’d think it would be to a team out of the race. A last place team that has a hole or two in the outfield. Someone that could give a AAAA player one last try. In trade: The return wouldn’t crack Dirk’s midseason poll even if he takes it to 50.

if you can get him on the cheap, I say absolutely go for it. After all, now that hunter is up, who else we got? Millwood and hurley get hurt every time they go out to the mound, feldman and even hunter need to slow down as they have both already exceeded their single season high innings pitched and should be moved to the pen, and mendoza may not be far behind the way he struggles multiple times through the order. What’s interesting about that situation is that one of the sticking points seems to be the Marlins refusal to add Ryan Tucker to the deal. And it would not surprise me one bit if Jon Daniels has made it crystal clear to Florida that any deal for Laird must involve Tucker.

Could it be that Florida is holding Tucker back to close a last-minute deal with Texas?

Can anyone see us trading for a low ceiling guy like Bonser to avoid starting Hunter tomorrow? Granted, that’s not the sole reason, but If the price wasn’t prohibitive I’d be for it. Hunter has logged a lot of innings already, and I don’t want to start his options any sooner than we have to.

Plaschke: Scioscia, the former Dodgers catcher, is the model manager who has created an atmosphere of winning.

If anything he fills in for Hurley, and at worst stays in the rotation until BMac joins.

Then, he’s in the bullpen. Possibly the OKC bullpen (though he seems deserving of the ML time as a reward).

So starting on friday maybe a stretch unless the rangers only expect him to go for three innings or so.

Had 3ER on 3 Hits, 2BB and 3 SO.

yes

i said something along those lines in an earlier post, besides the obvious 40 and 25 man issues, hunter has logged a career high single season innings pitched and would be looking at a move to the bullpen along with feldman at some point very soon. The fact of the matter is unless guys like millwood, hurley, and bmac get healthy soon, we are going to have some issues very soon on who to march out to the mound.

Heck unless jennings gets healthy soon, we may be looking at madrigal in the 5th spot. (check the sig before replying)

I just don't get

the love for Teagarden. his bat this year in AAA has really scared me off. he has an 83 birthday, so he really needs that bat to come on quick.

by clark on Jul 31, 2008 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The reason

I like him so much is his defensive value behind the plate. With how the Rangers are structured they can afford to have a “light-hitting” catcher. That being said I think Teagarden is a .230-.250 hitter with 20-25 HRs per yr. He also works more than his fair share of walks. I picture him as a 8 or 9 hole for the Rangers. With lineup that could feature kinsler, young, hamilton, davis (maybe a move to the OF when Smoak arrives), ramirez, smoak (2 yrs hopefully) I would be comfortable with that type of hitting catcher. I know you must have seen the difference in the presence that Teagarden provided behind the plate as opposed to Salty or Ramirez.

Actually

dont be surprised if you see florida give up a low level prospect in additional to any pitcher we get if we do trade with them. Not trying to sound greedy, but if you look at trading track records, ml players are not usually traded straight up for prospects, especially ones that arent rentals. Also, JD is notorious for tacking on a low level arm in his deals. Just saying.

Info

7. Ryan Tucker, RHP
DOB: 12/6/86
Height/Weight: 6-2/190
Bats/Throws: R/R
Drafted: 1st round, 2005, Temple City HS (CA)
2007 Stats: 3.71 ERA at High-A (138.1-142-46-104)

Year In Review: The best pure arm in the system continued to frustrate the organization, this time with a so-so showing at High-A Jupiter.
The Good: Tucker gets excellent leg drive and consistently pumps out mid-90s gas, touching 98 at times. He has a remarkably quick arm and a powerful frame that allows his fastball to park at those velocities throughout the game. His command has improved dramatically since signing, and he earns high praise for his makeup.
The Bad: Tucker’s secondary offerings still lag well behind his fastball, as his slider tends to flatten out more often than not, and his changeup is rudimentary. Many wonder if he could be far more effective in a bullpen role, believing that he could sit at 97-98 mph if he only had to throw 15-20 pitches per outing.
Fun Fact: Tucker made just eight of his 24 starts at home, but had a 2.13 ERA in those outings.
Perfect World Projection: For now, the Marlins will keep him as a starter, knowing that significant innings are required for Tucker to work on his off-speed pitches. If those come around, he has more potential than many pitchers above him. If not, he’s bullpen-bound.
Timetable: Tucker will begin 2008 in the Double-A rotation, and everyone will know more about his future role by the end of the year.

I could see Texas filling in prospects/ OF’s to make a deal work, wouldn’t be the major partner, just a facilitator.

Don’t really think that it is us however.

what if the deadline approaches

and they really just want him off the team due to all the distractions? At that point everyone has kind of backed off the whole ramirez deal and we can get him relatively cheap? At worst you get draft picks, at best you have a hall of fame hitter and cripple the wildcard leader in the process.

I love JD

The eerie quietness coming out of Arlington is great. Everyone in the country knows that JD holds the pieces other teams want, but they can’t get any info out of him at all, so we just get leaks out of other organizations. You can tell that the Gammons, Starks, and Olneys hate the Rangers for that reason…

He’s demanding Bailey or Tucker for Laird… and he’ll stick to his guns like he did with Boston last year. Even if nothing gets done, Jon Daniels is a beast at the deadline…

My first impressions of JD have been mixed

I loved the Tex deal the instant it hit (as with the Lofton deal)
I was disappointed at first with the Gagne deal, but only that Gagne’s market wasn’t bigger
The AG-CY trade confused me at the time and made me sad, though I didn’t hate it instantly.
I instantly liked the Hamilton-Volquez deal.

The Blue Jays want to compete

but they’re 6.5 games out of the WC, we’re only 4.5

According to ESPN’s Jayson Stark, the Blue Jays have entered the mix for Jason Bay. Of course, the asking price will be high. But Bay is Canadian!

The Jays are 6.5 games out of the wild card, that dangerous area where a team thinks it’s a contender. Bay is under contract for ‘09 too though.

The Jays aren't contenders.

Their pitching is pretty good, but their offense pretty much stinks.

Then again, by that logic, the Rangers aren’t contenders. On the reverse, of course.

Wow - just read this on ESPN's blog:
The Rangers had a surplus of catching for them to try to make a deadline deal, but they haven’t received an offer strong enough to persuade them to part with Gerald Laird. Barring a last-minute change of heart, they’ll keep Laird and try to move him this winter. With Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Max Ramirez and Taylor Teagarden in the system, Laird is an extravagance for Texas now that he’s eligible for salary arbitration.

Ian Kinsler has finally earned the right to be the third of my co-favorite players.

While it would be great to deal Laird today...

I like that JD is driving a hard bargain. The fact that he won’t settle for a lesser deal just to do something is good. He’ll have more opportunities for a quality trade during the winter if he doesn’t find one today.

by racecarr on Jul 31, 2008 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I'm of the opinion that we need to trade a catcher

Personally, I would prefer it to be Laird, but rationally, I really don’t care whether it’s Salty or Laird, just so long as the return is resonably good. I don’t want to see Salty stuck in the backup role for the rest of the season – I think it would kill his development.

If JD’s trying to trade Laird to FLA, I really don’t see that he could come up with a “bad” return for him there – just settle for whichever starting pitcher they give you, and you’ll have done ok.

by Telegraph on Jul 31, 2008 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perfect

Look we need to move one of our catchers. But not unless we get sufficient return. Teagarden is at the Olympics and pretty much gone for the year. he will be back sometime in September when rosters have expanded. Max is supposedly hurt now. Plus he could use the next month in the minors to work on things. Laird and Salty can platoon for the next month while we are still technically in the WC race.

One needs to be gone before we break camp next year but it is not imperative to trade one now. And if we trade one now it better be for a good return not just to unload a player. We are in the position of strength.

Two years ago he didn’t have anyone to work with. Lets not forget the Packers have basically completely rebuilt their team in the last 2-3 years. Even last year he was working with a rookie RB, other than Driver mainly rookie and 2nd year recievers, and a bunch of 2nd year lineman. Another Idea for Greinke

If I were JD, I’d consider making an offer of Jarrod Saltalamacchia, CJ Wilson, John Mayberry Jr. and Joaquin Arias for Zack Greinke and Ron Mahay.

According to Rosenthal, if KC trades Greinke, they would consider putting Soria in the rotation. CJ would allow them to fill Soria’s spot at closer. Saltalamacchia would give them a high end catcher, and Arias/Mayberry would have a better chance to succeed in KC than in Texas. Might not be enough for Greinke, but I think including CJ Wilson might make sense for KC.
