Gerald Laird Trade Thread

Ok here's my idea:

If you see something good on one Rangers player, post a thread with their name (like this one) and we'll keep all the rumors and news updates confined to each player's particular thread.

So, obviously, this one's for Gerald.  I just found something interesting on MLBTradeRumors.com, which discusses the Marlins' involvement in possibly trading for Pudge, but the Tigers passing to take the Yankees' offer.  With that leaving Florida catcher-less, one name that is brought to the forefront (especially with the Giants all but saying Molina isn't for sale) is Gerald's.

According to clubs that have spoken with Detroit, Pudge Rodriguez was offered to several teams Wednesday before he was traded to the Yankees. And the one other team that made a serious attempt to deal for him was the Marlins. But they didn't have a veteran back-of-the-bullpen arm to offer. So Detroit chose Kyle Farnsworth over the Marlins' prospect package.

The Marlins are still in the catchers' market as the deadline approaches. Other names they've been linked to include Texas' Gerald Laird, Baltimore's Ramon Hernandez and the Giants' Benjie Molina. But it now appears Molina isn't going to be traded.

Haha stupid me.

I can’t even get my sites right.

That quote is from ESPN’s trade deadline blog via Jayson Stark. Sorry for the confusion if there was any.

Ian Kinsler has finally earned the right to be the third of my co-favorite players.

JD really just needs to take whatever deal he gets for either him or Salty at this point

You can’t let Salty sit on the bench for the second half – if the Rangers aren’t gonna play him, I’d rather see him in another organization that will.

by lonestarJon on Jul 31, 2008 9:51 AM CDT   0 recs

good way to make a horrible trade

is to take whatever deal is offered.

It’s not ideal for Salty to get limited playing time the rest of the year, but that is sure better than giving him away.

Warner Madrigal makes Ezequiel Astacio look downright handsome.

+1

This is for the good of the organization (trading a Catcher), not the player. While that is important, JD’s first interest is the Rangers. If it wasn’t, I would feel very afraid for what might happen today.

by utlonghorn24 on Jul 31, 2008 9:54 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

True, but

Even though we would be selling low on Salty, I doubt whatever JD gets back for him or Laird is going to be a complete peice of crap at this point.

by lonestarJon on Jul 31, 2008 9:55 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

What I mean is

For example just taking Matt Maloney instead of holding out for Homer Bailey.

by lonestarJon on Jul 31, 2008 9:58 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'll be glad

when the trade deadline is over.

It’ll end up being much ado about nothing is my prediction.

agreed.

I would still like to find a way to get Snell for Salty. and Laird, Cruz and a lower pitching prospect not named Feliz for Homer Bailey would make me smile for months. not sure Homer’s the real thing, but we’re the organization to give him an extended shot.

Good idea

Somehow, I still doubt it stops the influx of new threads we are about to witness. EG seemed to indicate our talks about catchers are now focused on the Reds, Red Sox, and Royals. I am sure the Marlins are still in play, but this Manny deal is now the albatross on their boat.

by clark on Jul 31, 2008 9:52 AM CDT   0 recs

Probably...

But I figured I’d at least try something to slow them a bit. We’ll see if it has any effectiveness. lol.

marlins

acquiring manny means they are going for it. That means they are more likely, not less, to make a deal for a good catcher. If you go for it, you go to win everything, not to just get a little better. The Marlins aren’t done yet

There's a "Trade Talk" post right below this..

is this really necessary?

If it were the only one for the entire day...

It would get over 2k comments. I promise.

This also makes it much easier to read.

when it gets big, start a 2nd one…

just like the gameday threads

by Dirk Diggler on Jul 31, 2008 10:05 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well...

Because a lot of the information will be tough to read. Like if you want to find out about trades earlier in the day if it’s like 3:00, there will be 8 gazillion posts to read through before you find out about them all. It’s just better organized this way. We can keep all the non-Ranger trade updates in that one if it makes it easier.

Buck actually had a great point on BBTN

A GM has to figure out if a player coming off your DL is better than any trade you can make today. I know we need more than 1, but getting Bmac back for nothing is going to be a pretty good boost for this team.

Josh Hamilton is better than you.

would marlins do andrew miller for laird +

mlbt

“The Marlins can cross Ivan Rodriguez off their list of catching targets, though they did make a concerted effort according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark. They obviously couldn’t part with a veteran reliever; in fact they just acquired one in Arthur Rhodes.

Stark says the Marlins are still looking for catching help. He believes Bengie Molina will stay put, but Gerald Laird, Ramon Hernandez, Gregg Zaun, and others are still out there. “

by JackDublin on Jul 31, 2008 10:09 AM CDT   0 recs

Yeah that's pretty much straight off that quote I posted.

They read Stark’s ESPN trade deadline blog post and I think that’s what they posted on their site as a result. Still, I think the interest for Laird had to be very high. And to see him in the NL wouldn’t make me mad at all.

by 3bagbeast on Jul 31, 2008 11:19 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

no offense

but its a lot easier to have one thread open with the updating comments. its not like people interested in a laird trade dont care about any other trades.

the preceding post is not nearly as negative or insulting as you think it is

by DSheppard on Jul 31, 2008 10:10 AM CDT   0 recs

I wasn't implying that they wouldn't care about anything else.

I just figured it would make it easier to follow each rumor about each player if they had their own thread. Obviously it was a bad idea according to everyone. Sorry.

It seems to me...

that most deals this year favor the buyer….so JD may stand pat if not buy Ron Mahay.

OC ON THE TICKET WITH NORM

...i argued that the Rangers are going to be fringe contenders for Sheets and Sabathia, and that if they’re in the market for front-line pitching, a deal needs to be done now.

why now? Friedo explained it perfectly: Laird’s value will never be higher.

by oc on Jul 31, 2008 10:38 AM CDT   0 recs

I would have to agree with that.

He’s being talked about everywhere, and compared to what I thought he would get us 3 months ago, he’s going to get us much more. Trade him while everyone’s high on him and the ball is in our court.

That said, if he’s not going to get JD a worthy return, keep him for later.

pretty ironic

that the two players everybody wanted to give away for a sixer of Schlitz before the season started – Padilla and Laird – are our most tradeable commodities as the deadline nears. (discounting injured Bradley and Blalock and our untouchables, of course)

well

we also wanted to give away Byrd for nothing, and he’s still worth nothing

by JBImaknee on Jul 31, 2008 11:35 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

From Jeff Wilson:
Before a reliable source told the Star-Telegram that the Rangers had been by told by the Royals that right-hander Zack Greinke wasn’t available, a newspaper man in Kansas City said, “The Royals aren’t good enough that anybody is untouchable.”

That makes sense, but so does not trading Greinke. The Royals have stuck with him through his 2006 bout with depression and anxiety, he doesn’t turn 25 until October, and - most importanly - he’s really good. He might be the Royals’ best player, ahead of the so-far-disappointing Alex Gordon and Billy Butler. David DeJesus is pretty good, though, and so is Joakim Soria.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia would fit there because of his ties to former Braves personnel Dayton Moore (GM) and J.J. Piccollo (assistant GM). Saltalamacchia would also be a fit with the Marlins because of their Braves ties (manager Fredi Gonzalez), but the Marlins want to add a veteran catcher.

That’s where Gerald Laird comes in. Reports would indicate that he is third on the Florida wish list behind Bengie Molina and Gregg Zaun. Should the Giants part with Molina, they would need a catcher. Hello, Laird.

Friedo once again nails it on the head...

...if Laird is third on the Marlins’ wish list, even though he’s a far better player than Molina or Zaun… then this can only mean one thing:

Daniels’ asking price is too high.

by oc on Jul 31, 2008 10:50 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

in all fairness

i think he is worth quite a bit more than Zaun, and because of hit contract, he is worth more than Molina as well.

by clark on Jul 31, 2008 10:56 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

could it not be....

that the marlins know they are cheaper than Laird because laird is the better player?

No strong offers for Laird

Thursday, July 31, 2008 | Print Entry

Posted by Jerry Crasnick
The Rangers had a surplus of catching to try to make a deadline deal, but they haven’t received an offer strong enough to convince them to part with Gerald Laird. Barring a last-minute change of heart, they’re going to keep Laird and try to move him this winter. With Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Max Ramirez and Taylor Teagarden in the system, Laird is an extravagance for Texas now that he’s eligible for salary arbitration.
