I think one of 2 things is going to happen
1. JD will stick to his guns and pull off something nobody thought he would.
or
2. Nothing happens and we make a trade in the winter. There shouldn’t be any real sense of urgency here…

I'd like us to trade a catcher
Doesn’t matter to me anymore which one, just so long as Salty isn’t on the bench for the rest of the season…

I think there is some urgency
it isn’t obvious you can get a starting pitcher for Laird in the offseason. And I don’t want to trade 2 catchers at the same time. I think it is better to trade Laird now, give Salty two months of playing time and hope he does better, at which point you either trade Salty or Teagarden in the offseason.
by JBImaknee on Jul 31, 2008 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think that it is obvious that you
can get a starting pitcher for Laird today?
I guess we will know in about 2 hours 15 minutes.

well
if you can’t get a starting pitcher, I don’t see any point in trading Laird at all. But if the argument is about “which” starting pitcher, then you have to go for it. mostly because 95% of the starting pitchers out there can be in our rotation…

the only SP you can get is Bronson Arroyo or someone similar? Would you trade Laird for that?

but Vista sucks (if I’m going to have to use a new OS I might as well try Macs’ OS, right?) and Macs generally don’t get viruses and never suffer from the BSOD…as more of my friends get Macs I’m starting to be convinced that my next computer will be a Mac.

Keyboard shortcuts
If you’re like me and use them all the time. Other than that, get a Mac , you won’t regret it
by Taylor on Jul 31, 2008 1:06 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not going to say anything earth-shattering.
There are some programs that don’t work on a Mac, but those tend to be older programs. Basically, everything nowadays can run on a Mac or PC.
Everything is a little more expensive…mouses, webcams, accessories, etc. But just a little more expensive.
And like Taylor said, the keyboard shortcuts are different, and it takes a while to get used to only having one mouse button.
But they don’t get viruses, which is huge for me. And it is very user friendly.
I dunno. I prefer Macs, but I’m not a diehard defender of the brand.

From Wilson:
A text message from Rangers general manager Jon Danniels at 11:33 a.m. read, “Got nothing.” Then again, the Mark Teixeira trade was announced more than two hours after the deadline last year. Gerald Laird to the Marlins is the hottest Rangers-related rumor going. But consider this about Laird, who is a super guy, great teammate, great base runner and above-average catcher.
He is making $1.6 million after avoiding arbitration during the off-season. That came on the heels of a 2007 campaign in which he hit .224. Laird is hitting .320 right now and is arbitration-eligible again after the season. What kind of salary will he command should his numbers and defensive reputation hold steady? Maybe $5 million? (His agent is Scott Boras, after all.)
Should the Rangers pay him, or would they rather have Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Taylor Teagarden or Max Ramirez be their catcher for, oh, around $400,000?
Those who believe Laird should be paid must also believe the Rangers have no other pressing needs in 2009, like starting pitching, relief pitching or help at third base.

Reds interested in Cruz is the new headline
Why can’t we just do Laird and Cruz for Bailey!!!!! Or another catcher involved for him.
by Coolbean04 on Jul 31, 2008 1:07 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
The link says the Reds want Laird to
“If the Reds trade Ken Griffey Jr. to the White Sox then they could go after Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, who is tearing up Triple A Oklahoma but is blocked at the big league level. The Rangers could also try to move outfielder Marlon Byrd and make room for Cruz. The Rangers are still talking to the Marlins about catcher Gerald Laird. The Reds are also interested.”

there was an intersting proposal at the end of the last trade thread
grienke and mahay for salty, mayberry, cj wilson, and joaquin arias.
I think that makes sense although I also think we would be coming out ahead on that one. The royals get a lot of useful pieces, but it does lack star power. We are selling fairly low on wilson and have no solid replacement in line. If we do this deal, we can still trade laird, although most likely in the offseason, go hard after cc and/or sheets and a closer, as krod, kerry wood, and fuentes will all be free agents at the end of the year. That should help close the gap between us and the angels without selling the farm.

agreed
but it is an interesting idea. they get a top of the line young catcher with great hitting potential, jmj who has reemerged as a prospect and has serious pr potential due to his father, arias who can maybe be penciled in as their ss next year (they are starting tony pena jr. so if you think that comment was funny you will be on the floor when you look at his numbers) and the key to the deal, cj wilson.
They can move cj to the rotation for the young ml pitcher they wanted or as the guy who posted this in the last thread mentioned, they have talked about moving soria to the rotation and then cj could assume the closing duties. This trade has serious value for the royals, plus you get mahay back which would not only allow you to trade guardado to recoup a prospect, but you also have mahay for next year along with grienke and you could either flip ron next year or hold onto him and get draft picks as he will be no worse than a type B and probably type A.
I'm sorry my parents never had me sarcamsized.

By the time they improved the lineup enough to be in contention. Ceej will be gone, Salty, Mayberry, & Arias arb eligible with the potential to only be average anyways.

maybe, maybe not
either way, kc supposedly wants ml ready players. There is a significant gap in player development there, moore has done a good job, but all their prospects area a ways off so they have very little on the horizon and this is one of those deals that helps restock the major league team.

ESPN NEWS (TV) reporting that
White Sox may be close to a deal to get John Lannan. Are you kidding me?
If Lanna is available, the Rangers damn well better be offering a package starting with Saltalamacchia and others. Lannan is an extreme groundball-inducing lefty with a 3.33 ERA in 114 innings who is 23 and under control through 2013. If I am the Rangers, I would do my very best to beat any offer made by the Sox.

depends what they are giving up
if they are trading a top prospect like fields or poreda, then pass. His strikeout rate is bad and we might have the same thing already in harrison. nice guy to have, but I dont think I would trade a top prospect for him.
I'm sorry my parents never had me sarcamsized.
by rchawk12 on Jul 31, 2008 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would think long and hard about Lannan
He has a 2.57 ERA on the road, a 2.13 GB/FB ratio, a 3.33 ERA overall, and a DERA of 3.19. He also has an ERA+ of 129 and a WHIP of 1.29.
Admittedly he only strikes out 5 per 9 innings, but even so, those other numbers are ace-level. He would fit well in our ballpark based upon the fact that he induced a ridiculous amount of ground balls and is left-handed. Also, considering he is a left-handed, sinker ball pitcher, he actually does better against righties than lefties (slightly).
I haven’t read too many scouting reports on him, but given how successful he has been this year in well over 100 IP and how young he is (23), I would be probably be willing to offer Saltalamacchia and two other prospects for him.

Also this:
WSCR Radio in Chicago reports that the White Sox are interested in 23 year-old Nationals lefty John Lannan. Jon Heyman has heard the same. He has a fine 3.33 ERA in 119 innings this year. Not much of a strikeout rate though.

Dunn
was about to post this earlier, and now reminded of it with phillips talking about wanting to see him work with rudy (I know he is out, but apparently phillips doesnt, surprise, surprise).
It sounds like the reds are desperate to unload him and with milton banged up, he would be a beast here. And yes people (ricciardi) have questioned his work ethic, but a change of scenery and a return home to texas might do it. If you can get him cheaply, worst case scenario you get two high draft picks and another boost to an already stout lineup.
I'm sorry my parents never had me sarcamsized.

by lonestarJon on Jul 31, 2008 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
tough one
it all depends. one costs you a draft pick, but you get one if milton leaves. I would lean towards milton because of the versatility he provides as a plus outfielder when healthy and hits for a high average with a little less power but similar ops.
I'm sorry my parents never had me sarcamsized.
by rchawk12 on Jul 31, 2008 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thing is...
You will have to give them what they feel those 2 draft picks are worth.
It seems like they must be asking a for a good amount, otherwise Bos, NYY, or LA would have already traded for him
by clinton33 on Jul 31, 2008 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
obviously
but you never know. Sometimes gms would rather have someone who is closer to the majors and therefore actually contributing. draft picks are nice and all, but when you have a rotation like they do, it might be more prudent to acquire guys who will be able to help while they are all still with the team.

More on Manny:
1:31pm: Heyman says the Dodgers are back in the mix for Manny but the Marlins aren’t out of it.1:17pm: Nick Cafardo doesn’t buy the “dead” talk. However, the Pirates may have turned away from the Boston-Florida scenario for Bay. The Rays are still a possibility for him.

DMN update:
Hey, they’re still alive over there ;)
It’s quiet so far…

Richard Durrett E-mail News tipsBut if a deal were to be made, you can bet this is the time that GM Jon Daniels, assistant GM Thad Levine, senior advisor John Hart (who has been in Arlington this week), Jay Robertson, A.J. Preller and the rest of the Rangers management crew (it could take a page to list them all) will be working the phones.
Daniels is fond of saying that in his experience, deals usually come together late. Very late. Like last minute. So we’ll see.
Just walked by the clubhouse and didn’t see anyone packing things up. But it’s still early.

Everybody realizes that John Hart
wanted to trade Ian Kinsler for a broken-down Larry Walker back in 2004, don’t you and now he’s an advisor of some sort?.

Guess: RED SOX
Are exhibiting high moral integrity peerless in the game today by trying to trade a player who won’t play his heart out [regardless that what he brings to the table is damn near the best they’ve got]. It is an example of the sterling reputation they and their city bear, and the true reason I uninhibitedly love them so.

If it's the Reds
we’re talkin about trading with, what would our end of that package consist of if we were to bring back both Bailey AND Dunn? Wasn’t Dunn going to be moved to 1st base in 2006? I wonder if we could put him at first with Davis at 3rd.

hmm..
i never considered dunn 1b davis 3b.
if his value is that low i guess it wouldnt hurt to explore it.

i still think cat or cruz will go.

I'm just sayin
I think if Rudy could get a hold of Dunn, he might learn some plate discipline and become even more protection for Hamilton.
3. Hamilton
4. Dunn
5. Bradley
6. Davis

Learn some plate discipline?
He takes an insane amount of walks. The problem is as such; when you’re that choosy you’re going to take a lot of strikes.

No No No
You guys got it all wrong.
He needs to learn plate discipline, meaning he needs to swing at more pitches and quit clogging up the bases with walks.
Stupids!!
