This is how the trade deadline passes...
...not with a bang, but with a whimper.
All reports from the local media are that there are no Rangers trades coming down today.
Nelson Cruz is not on the 40 man roster, so he can be traded after today. Frank Catalanotto will clear waivers, one would imagine -- and if he doesn't, the Rangers would probably let him go to the claiming team -- so he can still be moved in August.

I get that…but if McCarthey is just another Millwood or Gabbard retread, why would you want to hang on to him? Haven’t had enough bad pitching in this organization?
I’m not saying don’t give him a chance, but I’d wait til the September roster expansion. But I think it is a mistake to say that he was our best pitcher last year, when you take into consideration how much time he spent on the DL

i said he lead our starters in ERA, not that he was our overall best pitcher
thats just a fact.
well, among those who threw a significant ammount of innings.
you keep him BECAUSE we have so many bad pitchers. Mccarthy had an excellent minor league career and was a significant prospect. Way better than gabbard. He has struggled through injuries in the majors and been OK, but not good. If hes on the DL, hes on the DL. It doesnt hurt the rest of the team to have him on the DL. But if he gets off the DL, there is little doubt hes among our 5 best starters. And hes still controlled for at least a couple more years. Thus, you keep him.
its quite simply a ridiculous statement. perhaps the resposnes could have been more tactful, ill give you that.

because we are going to end up losing him for nothing
when there is still some chance he may be able to help us as a righty power bat we need.
boggs is under control for a looong time and being snubbed for playing time. byrd isnt a long term answer. murphy can sit v lefties.
however I am aware the rangers still think they are in a playoff race and are going to act as such, and not worry about cruz right now.
if we brought him up and he failed again, fine, 3 strikes your out. but hes worth the one last chance.
just stating my opinion.

if we keep struggling vs. LHP, I’d be shocked if Cruz isn’t brought up at some time. He’s not a butcher in the field, he’s having an amazing AAA season. Maybe he’ll be our 2nd coming of Jack CUst.

easy to clear
a spot on the 25 by sending boggs down. could be difficult to clear a spot on the 40. the injuries and young callups (Harrison, Hunter) really havent helped, despit how exciting it has been to see the progress of our pitching prospects.

Why not give Cruz one more shot with the big club, maybe he is now ready, then again he may be a AAA superstar like Botts was, but I say lets give the guy a shot, his numbers are too good.

Why not wait till next year
If we bring him up now he only gets a couple months to show something. Or we could add him to the 40 this winter and let him start next season in the bigs and see what hes got then. Byrd probably won’t be back and JMJ could probably use more time in the minors. Our 40 right now is full and with Hunter and BMac having to have room made for them in the next week or two means making room for Cruz is going to be difficult.

“could use more time in the minors”.....yeah, like the rest of his career.
Why do so many posters make so many presumptive statements about guys who have shown nothing to imply they are ready for the bigs…...(paticularly in regards to JMJ and Diamond)
These two aint coming up…..now, or in the near future, or perhaps ever. Is it their high draft position that causes you to pencil them in to the big clubls future plans? Just curious….

JMJ
He has shown to be at least somewhat of a player this year. After this year we will put him on the 40 man roster and he will have at least three more years to prove himself before being subject to a Botts or Cruz type treatment. As a 24 or 25 year olf guy he could easily be a nice piece in the coming years.

wonder if perhaps teh best thing to do now is send Salty to AAA right now, find a backup for Laird and exchange Boggs for Cruz. Give Gerald the rest of the year, let Salty get ABs with Max hurt and TT in Beijing and give cruz 100 more last-chance ABs

I'm just glad
that it is over. I don’t know if I could’ve handled one more lonestarJon whine about giving away a Catcher. People get so freaking antsy on deadline day as if trading today is the ONLY opportunity to make a deal. Sure it sucks that Florida didn’t give up the farm for Laird, but if JD was asking “too much” as some would intimate, GOOD. What if JD would’ve only asked for Gabbard for Gagne last year? We still would have won the deal, but we wouldn’t have hit the jackpot like we did.
If you want to make a blockbuster trade, go play MLB 2k8 or something…

Well, I am happy
I generally loathe trades so anytime the deadline passes without a deal is cool with me. The only trades I do like are of the Gagne/Lofton variety so if Guardado, Cat, or Bradley would have been moved that’s fine too. If JD didn’t think he was getting good enough return for those then just take the picks next June and have a repeat performance of the 2006 draft.

Don’t understand the desire to see him traded for some fringe prospect (like Gabby Hernandez). I’d gladly trade our own Gabby Hernandez for a reliever who’s going to make the team more competitive the next 2 months.
