Minors - 07/31
Nelo pitched for the AZL team (I think), but I can't find any boxes and the game started at 5pm. I'm just going to assume he pitched a perfect game while striking out 43 guys until someone proves me wrong.
7pm (all times CST)
Clinton - Main (!!!!!)
Frisco - Hodges
OKC - Lee
8:30pm
Spokane - Rich Bleier (!)
9:30pm
Bakersfield - Holland (!!!!!!!)
Fun night.Fun night.Fun night.Fun night.Fun night.Fun night.Fun night.

Oh wow
Holland tonight also I didn’t see that.

AZRL
Started 5 mountain time – so 6 our time – then there’s usually about an hour lag until they start providing boxscore info. So, no box yet, should be soon. The cool thing is that there is a double-header tonight for the Rangers’ rooks. Maybe we’ll see Font or Thompson debut considering the high demands for available arms.
BTW, Matt Thompson supposedly got a $600K bonus to sign. [long slow whistle]
Grullon starts game 1
Clark Murphy at first base.
Also, you can watch a short Mike Bianucci video feature HERE. Dude strikes me as a cocky SOB.

Can anyone give a few bullet points on him?

Played at a low level in HS in Arlington, TAPPS, which is private school athletics, signed with TCU.
He’s grown and added velocity (low 90s now) and could add more, I think he’s 6-3 now.
They gave him 600k, which is mid-2nd round type money and is the larges bonus Texas has given yet, with the top two picks still unsigned.
I think he’s got a shot at a solid breaking ball, have no idea on where his change is.
Obviously a guy in their back yard who they probably got to look at more than most. He did compete in some of the showcases, but I suspect he was not a guy everyone saw much.

He went to Grace Prep
Same school that produced Justin Forsett, the running back at Cal.

Corey Ragsdale has been demoted down to the Spokane pitching staff. He’s giving up on trying to be a hitter and is going to try his luck from the mound. Guy has a pretty decent arm. Seems like a good guy – good face – pile-jumpin’ face – hope he finds some success.

Does anyone else...
...ever look at a minor league box score, get all excited because there’s a great pitching performance going on, then click on the box score and get all disappointed because it is someone like Derek Lee or someone?
Yes...
I have done that a few times this year.

Assuming
he continues this stretch, Rangers might have found another gem in this draft. Sorting out the top 20 in the farm is going to be rediculously difficult.

Main through 3
Faced the minimum. Only one runner on an error, but was erased on a K/CS double play. 2 strikeouts for Main so far.
Radar guns in Clinton
Are they about 3 lower? Main was normally mid 90s guy and today sitting at 89-91 Even when Feliz was there was he shown hitting 98 like he has in Frisco?
Main’s line 5 innings, 1 run on 3 hits, and 4 Ks.
The stadium radar gun in Clinton
Pay no attention to it. It would be right on for some pitches and seven MPH slow for others. It’s in the press box and generally not even pointing in the right direction. It picked up about 1/3 of pitches, 1/3 of catcher’s throws, and 1/3 of the time it didn’t even register anything.
Thanks
That just sucks when you hear the announcers can only give out misinformation.
thats pretty
Sweet, he’s been pitching just fine in Clinton. Wonder if him and Beaven will both be on track to get to bakersfield

Back to radar guns
That might be a legit 94, 95 with a real gun. That in 6th inning is very promising.
what the fuck do you know
about radar guns. I need to know this.

Arias
Anyone in OKC or seeing gamecast see if his arm has progressed? With Vazquez being an error a game streak, is it time to see what Arias can do?
No, no, never
Never, never, never, no, no, never.

When it gets to Sept, and the rosters expand
Won’t Arias be on the list along with Mayberry, Cruz if not already?
seriously
he really has been, i wonder if he figured something out… hahaha. He’s 2 for 2 tonight too
Vazquez
is a better player right now. Not saying that I wouldn’t look at Arias, but given where their heads are, they are going to ride Vazquez out as long as they’re alive.

Better hitter
Is he really a better defender right now? Also, when this team needs to have a guy out there to pinch run, vazquez won’t be stealing bases, meyer, and cat or boggs maybe.
The other issue with not testing Arias this year is where are you going to put him next year, no way we leave Andrus in Double A another year. He has been the hottest hitter on the team since all star break.
17 year old Joseph Ortiz
Went the final 3 in Clinton for the save.
3 IP
0 R
0 H
1 K
1 BB, 1 HBP
(two double plays, so he only faced 9 hitters)
ERA now 2.00 in 18 Clinton innings.
Clinton
has just been stacked with pitching, between there and Spokane, our pitching has seen some serious good pitching perfomances
Amazing
Is he coming off the bench to build up his arm? Like the treatment Feliz got in Atl. Or is he a future setup guy that can go 3 innings easy?
I'm guessing here
Someone more knowledgeable might know for sure, but I’m guessing that since he’s still 17, and in A-ball, they want to just get his feet wet and build some confidence. Clinton had Flores warming behind him in the 9th, and he got a bit of defensive help on a couple of good plays, but he was solid for 3 IP. I think I heard the radio guy say something about 90-91 on the gun, so take that for what it’s worth.
Oh, and Jonathon Greene hit HR #19.

Catching question
With the move to dl for Ramirez, Pina moves up to Frisco, now does Felix or Santana or Dominguez move up to California?
is that a given?
i mean pina getting promoted.
I'm sorry my parents never had me sarcamsized.
Its already been posted
I think i read it in Dallasnews blog
Holland updates...
Please keep ‘em coming (whoever might be able to). For whatever reason right now, I can’t bring up any minor league boxscores. I’ve been looking forward to Holland’s start all day and now I can’t even follow it.

Dominating stuff
Try another browser.
Now Holland has been just simply overpowering the Visala hitters. More than a few swing and misses on fastball.
yea...
thats exactly what it sounds like, tons of swing and misses on fastballs, and only hit was just a cheap dribbler
Whittleman scores
1-0 Bakersfield.
Will Whittleman be promoted to Frisco or remain in Bakersfield?
yes
I’m thinking Johnny gets promoted to AA. Adam Fox sucks at 3B

Visala cant touch his fastball
The most they can do is foul it off. With every start he is gaining in prospect status within the orginization. I hope the rest of the league recognizes.
3 innings, 1 hit, and 3 Ks.
I think prospect status is way in the rear view mirror.
At this point he’s basically cementing his place as the #2 pitching prospect in the organization.
Ace
Potential is amazing from being an almost unknown commodity last year.
Well
Velocity increases into the mid 90s and improved secondary stuff on a lefty will do that.
i wanna know who helped him do this
anyone know?, maybe harrison can go talk to him
Feliz and Hurley. The 1-2 punch of the future

Question of meteoric rises?
Who has done more in one year,
Feliz, Holland, or Hunter?
Probably Hunter.
Holland has done more to establish himself as a legit prospect but what Hunter’s done has been pretty remarkable. Pitching in 4 different levels of an organization in 1 season is pretty insane.
I should clarify...
Pitching in 4 different levels of an organization (culminating in the bigs) the year after you’re drafted is pretty insane.
thats a good
?
Although id say in pure prospect status, Holland wins, b/c he went from relative unkown to a top couple prospects. Feliz was known to have tons of potential and Hunter while advancing quickly hasnt really improved his status as a prospect by a huge amount
Rises in general
Either prospect or team wise. No way to determine pitching stud of the year among the 3.
If claiming prospects were stock
Id be Bill Gates and Warren Buffetts love child who inherited the earth.
I'm sorry my parents never had me sarcamsized.
4th inning
DP gets him out of the inning after two straight singles… He’s getting to a 0-2 or 1-2 count almost every time by just blowing his FB by guys. I think he tried it one too many times with the two guys getting hits.
Fastball happy
5 innings in, 3 hits, one walk, and 4 ks.
Did he get a little fastball happy there? Seemed to have forgotten about change and slider last few batters.
yea
I think he may have overused the fb because he kept blowing it by guys early in the count and they kind of caught up to it later in the count. His CU and Slider seem to work real well when he throws it though
5th inning
pop up to 1st, walk, ground out, pop up to 2nd
his walk was the first time he’s really even fallen behind in any count all night it seems like
Guessing he's done for the night.
Impressive stuff.
Done for the night?
Thanks for the updates fellas.

Holland
With how bad things are in Bakersfield overall, not his pitching. When ever they get eliminated this year, does he get moved up to Frisco to be #2 behind Feliz in playoff run. This would not only help with letting them experience some playoff fever, but also learning from each other more.
His next start is at the Lancaster launchpad.
If he has another great night there then he officially pwns the Cal League.
shroom
you listening to the Blaze game? Just wondering

Holland in 2008
Through four games in High A:
26 IP, 14 hits allowed, 4 walks, 29 SO; ERA = 2.08, WHIP = 0.69, K/9 = 10
Overall:
119 IP, 91 hits allowed, 32 walks, 120 SO; ERA = 2.34, WHIP = 1.03, K/9 = 9.1
Holland will likely finish the year with four more starts, one at Lancaster, one at Visalia, and two in Bakersfield (vs Lancaster and vs Modesto). Lancaster leads the Cal league in OPS, while Modesto and Visalia rank at the bottom. The two games vs Lancaster are likely all that stands between Holland and a truly spectacular 2008.
I think we;ll have to wait for Holland at AA
till next year. It waould damn sure be nice to to see him at Frisco this year but I doubt it.

Damn...
First Feliz, now Dutch. I can’t remember when I was this excited about two pitchers in this system, DVD perhaps, but not to this extent. At least not for me.
Then you have our own version of “Triple H” with Hurley looking good (except his last start). Harrison who has struggled, but I think has good enough stuff to be a ML starter and Hunter who has flown through the system in a year.
And then there are the other kids like Beavan, Main, Kiker, Font, Ramirez, and Perez.
This sytem is loaded with pitching talent. It would be nice if some of it was closer to the bigs, but hopefully “Triple H” will do well enough and give us some time for Feliz, Dutch, and the other kids to get here and make an impact. This team needs pitching (especially some to come up through the system successfully) in a bad way right now.
