LSB Community Prospect Project: Mid-Season #4

3 of these in the books now, and we still haven't had a close vote yet. What gives?

After capturing 48% of 227 sexually attractive votes, Eric Hurley has won the right to be called the LSB Community #2 prospect!

The list so far:
1. 1b, Chris Davis
2. RHP, Neftali Feliz
3. RHP, Eric Hurley

Time to move on to the next vote. This one seems wide open, with no run-away runner-up from last time

The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.

And please don't hesitate to tell me who you want on the list next.

NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who are currently in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect right now, so he goes on the list. It's that simple.

This is the first really tough vote for me

I voted Davis, Hurley, Hurley so far.

My head says the next three are: 1. Smoak 2. Andrus 3. Max, but my heart says 1. Max 2. Andrus 3. Smoak.

Then I start thinking about Kiker, Main and Beavan and my head starts to freaking spin.

This is tough.

You’re just preemptively copying me! But I’m gonna put Andrus further down than you are…

by bushe on Jul 5, 2008 8:26 AM CDT up reply actions

I will go with Maximiliano.

It is a tough choice between Maximiliano and Smoak but since Max is closer to the bigs (or in the biggs), I will give him the edge.

Chris Davis is a beast.

Max

Its a tossup between Max and Smoak here for me but with the season Max has had and the fact he is in the majors right now while Smoak still has ZERO pro at bats it goes to Max here.

Smoak

I voted for him in the last poll, so obviously, I have to vote for him again here. I love MaxRam too, but he’s kind of a man without a position – and since Smoak is a switch hitter and projects to be the total package in the field as well asa t the plate, I think he slots right above Max in the pecking order.

Max has impressed me with his D behind the plate

After seeing him in the flash I no longer consider him a “move off catcher” kind of guy. He can stick there. The only problem there for me is the logjam we have as an organization. Laird, Salty, Teagarden and Max… That’s freaking ridiculous.

I'm starting to think that too

But I want to see more than 3 starts in the Majors before I’m fully convinced. But hey, if his defense isn’t any worse that Salty’s then I’ll be on board with him catching full time.

But still, even I was 100% convinced Max could catch… I like what I’m Smoaking just fine. ;)

in the most recent sample

Smoak hit .315/.434/.631 with metal bats against college pitchers

Max hit .363/.447/.662 with wood bats against AA pitchers

Unless you are going strictly off projection, or you love the defense that Smoak offers at first, I just don’t see how you can put him ahead of Max right now.

At least for me...

I think MaxRam takes a little bit of a dip because of his defensive value. Although I have been impressed with how he has handled the catching duties in his couple of starts with the Rangers.

I think you are taking a community poll too serious. Besides Hurley has looked pretty good in the bigs and has a minor league track record that he should be a pretty good, pretty consistent pitcher.

by bushe on Jul 5, 2008 8:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Hurley

Well if Hurley truly is the number 6 prospect for the Rangers. I really like the health of the farm system. In years past a pitcher like Hurley would most likely be the number one prospect for the Rangers.

by booyahcaveman on Jul 5, 2008 8:36 AM CDT up reply actions

thats partly my point

but hurley at 3 is wayyyyy to high. no way he is at 3 in any other “professional” ranking

I would

tend to agre with you but like you implied this is not a professional ranking plus hurley has been hyped up for so long which is probably buying him a few spots. Ramirez and Andrus were trade acquistions and we JUST drafted Smoak so we simply havent followed them as long.

by booyahcaveman on Jul 5, 2008 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions

considering that all 3 will be top 100 guys

and if hurley doesnt meet the rookie reqirements is almost guaranteed to NOT be ranked ahead of any of those guys.

meanwhile main/beavan could be top 100 guys – even or ahead of hurley

for me – hurley is behind all 5 of these guys and probably behind teagarden too.

The same info

as everyone else. Which includes the fact that Smoak is ~2 yrs younger than Max, a switch hitter and has a position to play. If Smoak is a s good as projected, he will be playing in Frisco at the age of 23 like Ramirez. At that time we all can make some accurate comparisons between the two players.

by red shoe ranger on Jul 5, 2008 3:47 PM CDT reply actions

I guess someone

really high on potential who doesn’t put much stock in current performance and risk could have voted Beltre. JMJ is really confusing – maybe his mom reads LSB?

I’m glad to see that MaxRam and Andrus are closing in on Smoak. I have those two #s 4 and 5 on my list, ahead of the guy who has never seen a professional pitch…

by JBImaknee on Jul 5, 2008 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Smoak

You know I really can’t see how he could be ahead of guys who have not only obliterated the minors but are actually performing and contributing in the majors. Now if it comes down to him and Andrus then I think we will have a dilemma. The age argument some ave used between him and Max would be irrelevant since Anrus is 19 right now in AA but with Smoak projecting to have such a high offensive ceiling would that overtake such a high defensive ceiling like Elvis has. Add in the fact Elvis has been performing in the minors against Smoak who again has never taken a professional swing in his life and it would be a good debate.

there’s almost no way I can see rating Smoak above him. If he bombs out in Frisco (knock on some thick mother f’ing wood!) I could see someone else maybe sneaking in ahead of him… but it’s still hard to imagine Happy won’t be our #1.

Unless, of course, Smoak signs with enough time to actually get some Clinton time in this year, which he won’t.

It's either that or do a three way run-off

with the winner after 24 hours getting 4th, and then take the second and third place guys and immediately do a run-off between them to determine 5th and 6th.

What do y’all prefer?

The tie would be easier, I suppose, and the run-off would likely come down to a vote or two which isn’t really that decisive. The more I think about it, the more I like the three-way tie idea. But it’s a community thing. What do y’all think??
