Saturday a.m. things
Ugly outing for Vicente Padilla yesterday, who is apparently dealing with a neck strain that, along with the bruised thumb that knocked him out of yesterday's game, has his status up in the air for his next start. And Scott Feldman, who was going to start on Tuesday against the Angels, will instead start tonight, with Eric Hurley being bumped back because of a tight hamstring.
Anthony Andro says yesterday's outing probably kills any chance Padilla had of making the All Star team. Even before his last couple of outings, I didn't think Padilla was All Star worthy, but this likely makes it moot.
David Murphy is doing some extra film study from his ABs earlier in the year, to figure out what has happened that has him in his current slump.
Neftali Feliz is skipping over high-A entirely, and is on his way to Frisco to join the rotation there. I'm sure we'll have a story or two in the next couple of days about this move and why the Rangers are moving him up two levels.
Evan Grant says that Brandon McCarthy threw a 55 pitch bullpen session yesterday, and is expected to throw a simulated game on Tuesday. One would guess that, if that went well, he'll go on a rehab assignment soon thereafter.
Grant also talks about the C.J. Wilson interview on the Ticket, where Wilson makes some not-so-veiled references to the departures of Mark Teixeira and Buck Showalter having a positive effect in the clubhouse.

So where do yall think BMac will end up when he is ready to go? At this point I have to assume he will be optioned to AAA unless an injury occurs. I dont think Feldman, Hurley, or Mendoza are going to get bounced out of the rotation barring ineffectiveness (which I dont think will happen). If we traded Millwood or Padilla it would open up a spot, but i dont see that occurring either. Him in AAA for a while would be a good thing to me because he should earn his spot and not have it given to him IMO.

If BMac is healthy...
he will be in the Rangers rotation. My guess is that Mendoza would go back to long relief.
However given all the injuries to starting pitchers, there will be no shortage of opportunities to get some starts for any of these guys imo.

You think...
Mendoza gets bumped out even if he is doing really well? With how bad pitching has been this year, I think it would be tough to take him out of the rotation role. All this is hypothetical of coarse, but I just dont think you can relegate Mendoza to long relief if hes pitching well simply because of the fact that its BMac finally healthy. Just because the trade looks bad right now doesn’t mean he automatically deserves a spot to me.

Do you think he
will do that well though to not allow a healthy B-Mac some time in the rotation?

Mendoza?
hasn’t really done all that well buddy! He had a few good relief outings, but hasn’t done very well as a starter. It’s probably Mendoza right now. Definitely not Scooter Feldman, who is our #3 right now. But, w/ health concerns for Padilla, Hurley and Feldman’s fatigue, McCarthy (IF HE COMES BACK AT ALL) could take anyone’s spot.

Actually....
since his return from the DL he has been very good. His last start was totally screwed by the defense. He has pitched exceptionally well IMO

When he comes back he will go back in the rotation. He has the talent and ability to be a top-mid of the rotation guy for years to come which Mendoza and probably Feldman can’t say.

Agreed
If he comes back healthy and puts together a solid second half people will see why JD traded for him. Sure others will say he has been hurt since he got here but he never had an injury problem before that so one has to figure it was just bad luck when he got here.
IMO I think he will turn out to be a solid #2 for years to come. There is nothing wrong with that.

timing
Timing is everything, IF everyone is healthy. A mid-August return for BMac could mean Feldman goes to the pen. Anytime earlier might mean Mendoza goes to the bullpen until the Rangers want to shutdown Feldman. However, I agree with slc ranger, there will be plenty of opportunities for BMac to get starts due to injuries to the SPs. Injured starting pitchers is something the Rangers are never short of.

limiting innings
replacing Feldman is not a bad idea if they’re concerned with his innings total. If no one is healthy, and Milly or Padilla get traded, though, it may not matter.

no trade
I don’t think Millwood or Padilla get traded, They are not difference makers. Any team that is looking for pitching probably has someone that can give them comparable results.

Difference makers
They won’t add as much as a Sheets or Sabathia, but incremental improvement and depth are important, too. If a team has a bullpen that’s getting wasted because their starters aren’t eating enough innings, one of those guys could help.

I doubt
the Rangers will put Feldman back in the bullpen. It just doesn’t seem like the best move to start trying to have him adjust to being a bullpen pitcher after giving him an entire year to prepare as a starter.

Will he go on the DL in August with a “tired arm” instead?

That would be the best
if they feel he needs to be shut down. Let him stay around with the team and work out with the team, throwing some side sessions maybe, and you also have his roster spot available to give to other guys if its before September.

Wilson and his comments
I know this has been discussed in the fanpost over there, but I don’t mind seeing CJ say that stuff. It seemed obvious to me at the time that Teixeira was a negative in the clubhouse, but I think lots of fans didn’t notice that and thus were far more bitter when he was traded. Interestingly, the same fans that were mad at Hicks and JD for not keeping Tex are the same that think of chemistry is the key to championships.
I don’t normally believe that chemistry has much to do with winning – I think that a dugout is the same as an office, everyone has different motivations for being there and not everyone needs to be Kum-bay-ya. But there is such a thing as a negative personality that hurts a work environment, and makes everyone less productive. Everyone knows the arrogant guy in the corner who you want to see fail even though his success helps the whole group. I always got the impression that Tex was like that – and it was a shame because he was so talented.
As for CJ – is saying them in public an okay thing to do? I think it is refreshing and perfectly fair. Probably not PC in the baseball world, and CJ has walked on thin ice before, and it is kind of a big deal, as Tex is going to want a lot of money in 6 months and now his former teammate is on the record as saying he was glad to be rid of him. It will be interesting to see if this gets brought up when he’s negotiating with other teams…

CJ
i personally see nothing wrong with his comments. Players criticize guys who aren’t on their teams and it’s no big deal, and I think cj is one of the few guys who’s willing to speak his mind.
I honestly can’t ever see young or kinsler ever publicly saying anything bad about anyone, and they flat out said they don’t remember there being problems with teix.

Sturm elaborated Friday on CJ's Thursday comments and.....
Obviously Tex was the July departure and Buck was the offseason 06 departure that made things better. However, CJ mentioned 2 people in offseason ‘06, and Sturm, based on informed speculation, fingered GMJ as the other cloud in the dugout that departed in offseason ‘06. Sturm related he heard from insiders that following a nice catch in the field, GMJ would come to the dugout and announce (paraphrasing here) “cha-ching, somebody’s gonna pay for that next year…..”.
I just hope CJ doesn’t catch hell from teammates for being honest.

His current inability to miss bats
would hold him back in my opinion. Typically (not in every case), pitchers tend to miss more bats in relief than they do as starters. Despite his stuff, Rupe doesn’t strike very many guys out.
I don’t think the Rangers are counting him out long term, but with the guys that are already breaking through added to the on-the-cusp injured guys (like Murray and Gabbard) and McCarthy working his way back, he’s got to be way down the list.
by NoNameOnCard on Jul 5, 2008 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rupe
The guy has been injured alot in his career. He has now finally seemingly found his niche in the bullpen and is looking like he can develop into a nice late inning setup guy. Along with all the nice young starting pitching prospects we have coming up it would be nice to have a good young bullpen also. I think Rupe, FX2, and CJ could form the nucleus of a real nice bullpen for years to come. All you would have to do is add those veteran guys like Guardado and Wright year in and year out and it would form a nice pitching squad
