4th of July in Frisco
I went to my first and probably only Roughriders game of the season last night. Every time I go to a game at Dr. Pepper Ballpark I am amazed at how nice that place is for a AA stadium. All of the patriotic stuff from a Irag War hero throwing out the first pitch to a modern day Andrews Sisters act singing the National Anthem was pretty cool. The fireworks were good too even though they scared the bejeezus out of my 2 year old daughter.
The game itself was quite a rout with the Riders winning 8-1 behind 8+ strong innings from Michael Ballard. He started the 9th with a 4-hit shutout (what's up TLT) but clearly looked gassed and gave up a couple more hits and a run before they took him out. I have to admit that I had never heard of the guy until yesterday afternoon but he really looked impressive. He doesn't have overwhelming stuff but he had good command and I could see him being a Rheinecker/Murray type that spends time in AAA and makes an occasional emergency start in the majors.
I was impressed with Andrus more than anybody else. He walked 3 times and had a single at the plate and made a couple of nice defensive plays. The thing that struck me most about though him was his speed. He scored from 1st on a double by Vallejo and he was really flying around the bases. He's a good. I also love the minifro that he is sporting...
And here is a picture of Andrus and Borbon before the game.

Andrus
Really coming on of late. A very good sign.

Lemon, Beltre, Andrus, Vallejo, Borbon
That’s a group of athletic guys who are steadily making strides lately. Very nice.

I assume
whenever Andrus is promoted Lemon will be there to replace him. What will be interesting is to see how the Rangers handle Vallejo. He is blocked by Kinsler and technically Duran as well who is more of a second baseman than anything else.

and Osuna
Not as athletic, perhaps, but part of that up the middle group. One of the best things about 2008 so far, it seems, is the number of guys like that who have looked like they might be real prospects instead of soldiers. Gac, Vallejo, Osuna, and add the emergence of Holland (who was already a prospect), K. Gomez, shit the list goes on and on…
I’ve got my eye on Mitch Moreland, too. He’s made strides while moving up a level, some nice plate disipline there and modest power with a healthy number of doubles. Might be a Boggs level guy someday. Nice to see Harrison taking advantage of being healthy, too.
Another guy I find intriguing for without much reason is Restko. He had a terrific year in A ball as a 20-yr. old, then slumped badly the next couple of years when promoted to high A. I find myself rooting for him for some reason.
All in all, I don’t think we could have scripted a much better year so far for the system.

Osuna
Yeah, I regretted not adding him to that list immediately after posting that. I just now checked the BAK box and like clockwork he’s 1-1 so far tonight. Just keeps on ticking. Moreland had a ridiculous night.

to stay or not to stay
Would the Rangers promote Andrus to AAA late this year? Or would they prefer him to stay at Frisco for the Texas League playoffs?
"Publicly, Beavan has said in an interview that his velocity has dropped because he's not used to throwing as much and because of all the travel -- late night bus rides, sleeping in hotels, not the best nutrition, etc."

Frisco
I think they want him to spend the entire year in Frisco. A couple weeks or a month in OKC really isn’t going to affect his timetable any and since he will barely be 20 years old at the end of the year I think we should keep him in Frisco all year and have him start next year in OKC with an eye on September 09 to see him in Arlington. Now granted if he gets on a real hot streak and stays hot for a month or so then you can possibly promote him.

I got caught on Main
Last night as the fireworks started.
It wasn’t all bad though. In addition to the display all around me, I got to stare longingly at the reliably hot girls populating Manny’s. Then my friends and I went to Gloria’s.
All in all, a nice night in Frisco.
