Brewers, Indians Agree On Sabathia

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, a Sabathia deal has been agreed upon.  Literally, the entire article reads:

I just was told by a reliable club source that the Brewers have a deal in place with Cleveland for left-hander C.C. Sabathia, contingent on the paperwork being done and medical records exchanged.

But believe me, folks, that's a deal. All that other stuff is formality.

All I know so far is that top prospect Matt LaPorta is in the deal. I was told two lower-level minor leaguers also are included. The Brewers refused to include another top prospect such as Alcides Escobar or Mat Gamel.

Look for Sabathia to make his debut for the Brewers Tuesday night at Miller Park against Colorado.

I'll post more details as I get them.

Cleveland too

They just traded their ace and their getting a first baseman who’s bat is nice, but a lot of players’ bats are nice in the minors.

in their defense...

...keeping him in Cleveland was a longshot…

all their doing is maximizing his return.

here’s what i don’t understand… what kind of pitching are the Tribe getting in return?

that’s a rather… large… hole to fill in that rotation.

Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."

Shapiro is Sharp

This is a no-brainer. CLE is out of this season and Sabathia is not likely to return to the Indians if he wants to “test” the free agent market. So, why not get something for him in the meantime.

Daniels did the same thing with Texeira and it was the smart move.

by Austin Ranger on Jul 6, 2008 8:02 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

huh?...

...this is an awful move by Shapiro. with the way C.C. is pitching, i would have rolled him out there for a couple of more starts, maxed his value a little higher… and more importantly, gotten the outside candidates to compete…

by oc on Jul 6, 2008 8:08 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

or he slips

on the rubber and hurts his out of shape ass and you get nothing for him. LaPorta is a pretty nice get in his self

by blueballlefty on Jul 6, 2008 8:44 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

that's a level argument...

...LaPorta could pull a hamstring rounding the bases… and he plays almost daily.

by oc on Jul 6, 2008 10:45 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Who?

Who are the other candidates for Sabathia and could the offer someone better than LaPorta? Two more starts would not up Sabathia’s value. It might have decreased it since that would be 2 less starts for the acquiring team. LaPorta plus 2 other player sis probably better than the draft pick compensation the Indians would have gotten.

"Publicly, Beavan has said in an interview that his velocity has dropped because he's not used to throwing as much and because of all the travel -- late night bus rides, sleeping in hotels, not the best nutrition, etc."

Laporta is a great prospect

He’s more than worth a three-month rental of CC. Take into account that they’re losing the draft compensation, though, and you’d have to mull this one over.

by BudLight on Jul 6, 2008 9:22 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

is he worth more than

main and beaven though b/c that the value we got out of draft picks last season Gary “stinkin” Mathews Jr.

id take beaven and main over Laporta. maybe thats me and you can get that without trading the guy all season.

the question is who are the 2 minor leaguers other than laporta and who is the PTBNL, who did they draft that was high pick last season that has value but cant be traded yet? if those 3 are good plus prospects its much different

Davis is an exception ot the rule

You very rarely find players of his caliber in round 5.
If you get a contributor, you’ve got what you wanted all along. I don’t give a flip what position it comes from. Don’t you think we could have used an impact 1B bat earlier this year? Such things can’t be taken for granted.

by BudLight on Jul 6, 2008 10:01 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ok not just in the draft i meant

we got raffy twice, will, and Agone and all of those guys fit the category of 1b i would love to have on my team, and we never had to give up an ace to get any of them. I would never in my life give up an ace no matter what his contract situation was for a good power hitting 1b, especially just a prospect. ill find one of those on the FA market and load up in the draft. Hell Gamel was a 4th rounder. and he was the reason they moved Laporta.

fine by me.

you ok including mitch williams for raffy or any1 swapping Captain “I’m in prison for 14 years for setting my gardener on fire” for Agone?

and besides, neither one of those guys were “elite” closers. good closers? no doubt about it but, Mariano is or was an “elite” closer, trevor hoffman was an “elite” closer. mitch willaims and uggie? we signed him in 2003 and traded him in july and was a FA in October of that season and we got Adrian Gonzalez for him. neither were elite closers

1b are around and they can be had and you dont have to give up aces to get them.

Think something like Davis + Vallejo + Gomez. All that for a rental who hardly guarantees you a playoff spot, and who is guaranteed to hit the market. Eff that.

This is doubly good for us. No chance we trade for Sabathia or Sheets now.

by LiamP on Jul 6, 2008 7:01 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, but

the Rangers could pretty much kill any team with quantity. JMJ, Vallejo, a couple of A/AA pitchers. I suppose it really depends on the trading teams’ needs.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 6, 2008 7:05 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I understand

but it depends what that team’s needs are. If they target a player you have, then good luck getting them off that player. And of course, a quantity deal would be much more feasable for a lesser talent than C.C.

The Rangers will soon have either Borbon or whatshisname as very good CF propects. They will garner some attention, if ever dangled.

Check his AAA line

.900 OPS in the PCL—this dude’s ready for MLB.

He’s striking out once every 6.7 PA’s, which is much improved.

1:2 BB/SO in AAA.

If he’s a good defender on top of that, then Marlon Byrd needs to be traded / DFA’d ASAP. Mayberry seems like he could put up .275 / .330 / .490, which is an above-average COF, coupled with his defense.

There are currently only 29 OF’ers in MLB with an OPS above .820.

by Chase Irwin on Jul 7, 2008 3:09 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I say wait

Wait until September on him. It took him this long to finally have it click for him and show the promise that made him a first round pick so let him continue to have success in the minors a little while longer. Plus hes not a CF which means if we brought him up Hamilton would have to play CF more which would probably mean less out of him since he would need more days off. Byrd is doing a fine job if nothing else allowing Hamilton to play RF alot and save himself since he has already played about the same number of games this season as he did all last season.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Jul 7, 2008 3:25 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm with you

September is soon enough for him.

To Chase above, I can’t imagine there is much of a market for Byrd, and I think your numbers for Mayberry in MLB are a bit optimistic. I’d plan on something more like .250/.310/.490.

Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.

by t ball on Jul 7, 2008 4:31 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So you don't put as much stock in his AAA numbers?

I thought it was a fairly significant sample.

To bigsteve, I don’t think Hamilton playing RF is exactly resting him. I don’t really believe in that. If you’re worried about his health, sit him altogether, preferably against lefties, which would allow Boggs to play CF and destroy LHP like he does.

Byrd is completely expendable. I hate to see him occupying a roster spot, playing against RHP instead of Boggs, especially with someone knocking on the door.

by Chase Irwin on Jul 7, 2008 4:58 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm hopeful,

but trying to be realistic. I just think the major league pitchers are going to be able to exploit his longish swing more than AAA arms. I’ve been watching his numbers closely this year. The decrease in K’s and the surge in line drives upon his move to OKC was very encouraging. But both number have moved in the wrong direction the last month.

I’m hoping he’s just slumping a bit, but we should watch to see if he makes an adjustment soon or snaps out of a slump. Yes it’s a decent sized sample, but you’re also weighting it against about 1300 previous minor league at bats. I’d give him another 200 in OKC before moving him up unless injury or trade creates a strong need before then.

Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.

by t ball on Jul 7, 2008 5:05 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

I buy your argument about waiting till September, it’s just that I think he is a better alternative NOW.

I guess I was thinking August is best because he could get a decent amount of AB’s before the year is out, which would allow us to “decide” if he’s ready to be a starting COF in ‘09. I’m not sure if he could get enough AB’s over a month to allow us some notice—for instance, re-signing Bradley or not.

The power is debatable

LaPorta has 32 HR in 114 career MiLB games. He has legit power potential. Projection wise he might not have 40+ as Davis does but he is definitely in the same class.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 6, 2008 6:49 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i think

he would get the edge over smoak for having done it in the minors, and the edge over davis for having the good k/bb ratio.

but yeah with the raw production davis has put up and smoak being a similar top college hitter, i suppose its debatable. he is certainly on their tier though, above maxram.

An interesting move.

The Brewers are clearly in “win now” mode, and if they think this is their year, it’s a nice move.
That said… Sabathia’s not going to re-up with the Brewers, at least not until testing the FA waters. So it’s one of those “wait and see” deals. If the Brewers make the playoffs and make it to the NLCS, it’s not a bad deal. But if the Brewers fall on their face and miss the playoffs, or if the Cubs and Cards continue the way they’re going, it’s going to have a lot of Milwaukee fans upset.
The Indians are apparently content with going into rebuilding mode, and LaPorta is a nice piece. It makes me wonder who else is available from the Tribe.

good deal for both teams

LaPorta will be masher in the Indians lineup for years starting in 2009. The Brewers make the early trade and get an extra 5-6 starts from Sabathia. My predictions is that the Dodgers sign Sabathia in the offseason.

This is a smart deal for Milwaukee

If Milwaukee falls out of the race in the next month, then they have two ace’s to trade to contenders. If they stay in, they’ll have two #1’s going into the stretch and playoffs (always a great thing), and then get 4 bonus draft picks next year. After their heavy draft this year, Milwaukee is both rebuilding and contending at the same time.

LaPorta is a cheap price for all that.

Let's get Burnett

The Blue Jays have stated they want at least a shortstop in return for Burnett. He is a good strikeout pitcher who is keeping the ball in the park for a light hitting team.

Why not send the Jays Arias, Gold (since we won’t give him a chance) and another lower prospect for Burnett? I think that is a deal worth making that doesn’t set us back anything… and may insert a solid ace pitcher into the rotation.

I think we could have put a better package together for CC, but trading for Burnett and making a FA run for Sabathia and/or Sheets in the fall is a nice fall back.

Seriously?

“Why not send the Jays Arias, Gold (since we won’t give him a chance) and another lower prospect for Burnett?”

Because Arias is basically a non-prospect, Gold is a complete non-prospect and the other player is a lower prospect. Burnett is good and the package you just described wouldn’t be enough to trade for a Josh Rupe type RHP, let alone AJ Burnett.

Rob Bryson has the potential to be this deal’s Neftali Feliz—a young, projectable pitcher who, a year later, looks like the key to the trade. Bryson’s arm isn’t quite as live as Feliz’s (few are), but he has a potentially plus fastball/slider combo and misses a ton of bats already with both pitches. He’s a great athlete and physically could start, but his command is still below-average, and his control is significantly better in relief.

This is the Texas Rangers, professional destroyers of hope, we're talking about. - BAC

I like Bryson a lot

when i was looking at their farm for a potential match for Millwood or Padilla, I saw Bryson and really liked his numbers.

Still, to call him a potential Feliz is quite optimistic.

Woo Hoo

I am glad he is out of the AL. He was a Ranger killer. Maybe it is my imagination, but it seems that the Indians always have Ranger Killers on their team. Paul Sorrento is a name that seems causes me to break into a cold sweat.
