ESPN (-1) + (-21) = Crappy Sportsnews
I realize the majority of the Lone Star Ballers have written off ESPN and don't subject themselves to the over-the-top factually deprived broadcasting that is ESPN, but I did so this morning. I don't often sit down and watch Sportcenter all the way through anymore, but I was bored this morning and wanted to hear some of the All Star talk. It didn't take long before I thought my head was going to explode.
(-1) Maybe some of you caught this. This may seem minor, but it is evidence of the general over looking of the Texas Rangers. In their discussion of the All Star lineups they say Josh Hamilton's name, call it a great story, and say his homerun total and RBI total. Then the finish the listing the starters. After this they show us the names of the four Red Sox starters and then the two Yankee starters. After all of this East Coast-love, they put up the list of AL reserves. The Talking East Coast Head says, "AL reserves, a heavy dose of AL Central. Of the eleven players, seven of them hale from the Central. The only AL West player, Milton Bradley, at DH and he his likely to start in place of the injured (pause for drama) 'Big Papi'." THE LIST IS ON THE SCREEN!!! I was able to read all the names and see that Ian Kinsler and Michael Young are on it. I am guessing he wasn't sure who they were or who they played for and just assumed they were AL East guys. Since they are All Stars and his researcher didn't include them in the list of AL Central players they must play for the East and since he didn't recognize them them they must play for Toronto or Baltimore. Just to rub some salt in the wound, when "revealing" the NL Reserves he mentions Cristian Guzman's NL leading 118 hits. Hmm, "NL leading"? That means someone in the AL must have more, right? I wonder that is? If ESPN wants to know who that guy is, all they need to do is look at the top of the list for batting average or at the top of the list for runs scored. I will stop before my blood pressure gets too high.
(-21) In their "Quest for Title Town USA" they featured the city of Pittsburgh. In their video montage of the Pittsburgh's championship history, there is no mention of Roberto Clemente. He was responsible for two of their titles, MVP of one series, had a base hit in every single playoff game he played in and is a legendary figure in baseball as a whole. He was 10 times the player the mentioned Stargell was and he was 1000 times the player the mentioned Mazeroski was.

I'd just say
That ESPN is not entertaining. Everything else follows from that.
I would think that they mush-down the quality in order to appeal to the probable majority of their viewers—casual fans who just want an overview without having their heads explode because of minutiae which is only interesting to a small percentage.
Still, it’s just not engaging or entertaining in any way, and that’s the worst thing for a network.

Yuppers
I still tivo BBTN every now and then and zip through the awkward and annoying parts, but even that has fallen off in terms of quality. Those bits where the analysts all go over and mug for the camera on the little fake field and pretend to pantomime certain situations or whatever the hell it is they do is so awkward and stupid. And of course it comes at the expense of highlights, which is all I ever wanted out of a sports highlights show.

Yep
You used to be able to turn into Baseball Tonight and see highlights of every game played that day. Now you are lucky to see highlights of half the games and then you get to see little demonstrations and most important things and other crap that prevents highlights from being played.

I used to anxiously await
BBTN many years ago. Now I actively avoid it.

Sarcasm to Follow
WHAT? Watching ex-professional athletes demonstrate baseball skills in a suit and tie has value that you can’t put a dollar amount on. Unless you put the 7 figure deal that I am going to sign as a 29 year old rookie. The contract that I earned by practicing those very skills in the living room. My wife is totally behind my dreams (I promised her a new car with my signing bonus) and she always helps out by feeding me the imaginary double play or pantomiming the pitchers pick off move, etc etc. Even if I don’t make it because of a freakish injury (stubbed my toe on the coffee table practicing a take-out slide, a scary 24 hours) or something, it has still improved the quality of the game as a whole because of the minor league players that tune in (if their smart they are anyway).

Yep
Bradley the only AL West rep. In a local network affiliate, that would be a step toward a firing. Only at Excrutiatingly Stupid and Petulant Network will it fly along.

Should they care
about a .500 team that hasn’t been in the playoffs since ‘99? You think that story helps drive their ratings nationally?

Yeah...
the only ESPN channel I enjoy is “the ocho”.
I do still use my DVR for BBTN just to see if they talk about the Rangers, but they never do. I usually just fast forward through the entire show.
There was a time 3 or 4 years ago when that was where I got most of my sports news from. Thank goodness for the net and MLB packages on the computer and TV now.

One more reason to pay for the MLB Channel...
It can’t get here soon enough, though.
